Glass wall with grid-like molding

I am trying to create a wall like the one in the picture with glass and a grid-like frame. How can I go about doing this?

You could use a "shower wall" and use polyline solids to create the divided parts. There's probably a faster smarter way to do it. I'm sure someone will chime in soon enough. Lol

Probably not the most efficient approach, but you could use a glass wall with PL solids.

Rosco and myself basically said the same thing lol. 

I drew a shower wall (default wall type within chief) and just used 1" polyline solids, centered in the glass, to create the grid.

Being a cabinet guy I thought of cabinets. Inset, 1" thick, with inset side panel, back as an opening. Keep splitting. Made the doors first convert to door symbol. Do the math to figure members and sizes to get total first.

Is there any way you'd be willing to do a vid of that process?  Id really love to see that....could what you do work for commercial curtain walls?

Or you could build a wall,  fill it with a widow with mullions.

...or a glass wall with a molding polyline in each direction with multiple moldings.

These can be broken and have no molding where doors are needed.

Or individual molding polylines multiple copied in each direction which can be broken and have no molding where doors are needed.

I think the vid Chop mentions uses the principal- (I didn't check it though) but a week or two after I posted a plan with the method in it Mike did a vid having come up with it interdependently.

Attached is a plan with one way to use some of what I did if you were doing a more complicated curtain wall than what I did above for the store front. I'd build the module with a cabinet, convert to a millwork symbol, place, then be fruitful and multiply.

There are enough of the parts in there to get an idea of what you need to do-open the DBXs. Few other  plans I've  posted elsewhere could be of use- Sub Zero flush inset, and beaded inset, and some door kit plans for making cabinet door symbols.

 

I also keep a plan template with framed cabinets (wall, base AND tall), separations set to 0", set to no shelves in front then change fronts to have "to side panel inset" (or blank area) backs and sides as openings, delete all separations. Just easier to start that way when doing complicated configs.

Tips-

  • when you get one area you're happy with copy and move to save that, you can't undo a step in the config so if you muck up you have to start over.
  • Keep a second plan up with a 3d view-drag new door symbols from library to check that they do what you want. If they are off you can usually change stretches and origin in the library and try again.
  • Setting stretches outside the symbol prevents doors from becomiing 3/4"thick when inserted
  • Sometimes the answer is to add a new "layout" vertical or horizontal, or a separation and then change it to something else and resize.

Chop is correct that I avoid doing vids. Partly I'm lousy at it, partly something Glenn said once that I took to heart (maybe not as he intended though) I took it as sometimes it's better to give folks enough work it out for themselves instead of "just do this". While I've learned an enormous amount from this forum there are a lot of things I wouldn't know if I wasn't in the habit of digging rabbet holes to crawl in.

Forgot- one advantage of doing it this way is you can keep your members sized as you want but still tweak overall sizes. When working with a cabinet config keep an eye on what is and isn't locked.

You can also use a "Panel Railing Wall" with the Horizontal Mullions built into the Panel (Glass for the main part of the panel) and use the Newels as the Vertical Mullions.  Set the Newels at full ceiling height.

 

I did a video some time ago with this method but I don't know where it is - probably in the old Forums someplace.  You can insert a doorway into this "Railing Wall" and change it to a "Hinged Door".

nah, actually Yoda is the king of making stuff with cabinets. Couple of years ago he made a mess of unbelievable stufff-don't remember exactly what...hand crank washing machine? Lamborghini? ...some stuff anyway.

      I have created a number of different wall types to show proper dimensions (i.e. when one side of the wall is 5/8" Type X and the other side is 1/2" drywall) as well as to calculate the correct material counts and to show the proper information in the schedules.  Unfortunately doing that seems to have a down side...it changes the framing as if they were separate walls instead of the same wall with different materials on them.  I have seen the following side effects (colors refer to screenshots below):
       
      (Green Arrow) In unfinished rooms such as an attic storage space which only has a subfloor but no drywall, the walls get pushed up into the rafters by what appears to be 3". (Red Arrows) The floor joists and top/bottom plates are cut in the middle when they should be continuous pieces of wood.  In addition, you can see that the walls which are produced are not boxed at the end...the top & bottom plates stick out at the end. (Purple Arrow) Parts of the gable wall are not created.  In this case you could argue that it is not needed, but if a builder makes a wall he is not going to leave a hole in it. (Blue Arrows) An extra stud is added to a room that has no drywall, and therefore doesn't need nailer studs.  In addition, it looks like the other stud needed as a nailer for the finished room in the middle is missing from the plan view of the framing (see 2nd screenshot).  
      Am I doing this all wrong (creating separate wall types), or is there a way to use them and fix (any of) the issues I mentioned?

      PS - I am a little surprised that the wall finish is not part of the room settings (like the floor & ceiling already are)...that would allow you to have continuous walls and still have different materials in each room (i.e. greenboard in the bath, 5/8" type X in a garage, unfinished in an attic, etc.

      I've used CA for years and AutoCAD since 1985. (Yeah I'm old).
      In Florida we do a lot of Block house plans. (CMU) 8x16x8 concrete blocks.
      Other than manually placing block patterns. Does anyone have an easy way to do wall fill patterns to show the ACTUAL CMU BLOCK Pattern in plan view. 
      It would be great if it actually placed filled cells required for all window/door openings and corners. Any suggestions?

      I think I have an issue with my "template" plan as I cannot get walls located above invisible walls to build correctly.  The wall in the attached plan is where the ceiling transitions from 12' tall to a room with a 9' tall ceiling.  I attempted the same drawing in a stock Chief template plan and everything worked like it's supposed to...so, I gather I have a setting in my template plan that is goofy...

      Having an issue with wall framing height. Never had this before and have recently upgraded to X11, so wondering if it's operatior error or the program, etc. Anyway here goes:
       

       
      This shows exactly what happens. The wall framing does not go up to support the plate height.
       
      Have checked the following to no avail:
       Verified ceiling height was accurate
       Wall is marked 'baloon through ceiling above' so we're not talking about a hidden attic wall messing this up - the wall actually does go up to the rafter - just the framing does not.
       
      Any insights?
