  3. Greg: installing ver X9 should have no effect of X8 but it's always best to install before the weekend since tech support is closed then make sure you save the X8 download from the digital locker before downloading X9 X8 will be gone after that from the digital locker but not your PC - you can have many prior versions of Chief on the same PC probably best to finish the project in X8 then start the next one in X9 Lew
  4. "anything" can be done in Chief but "workarounds" may be needed Chief is mainly for residences but it can do many other types of projects Lew
  5. just guessing maybe make it two rooms ? use room divider tool ? Lew
  6. I've got 3 set up with the Text Styles I want for each Layer Joe: WOW, that is a lot of layer sets Lew
  7. Larry: I always use "save as" I prefer to have control over my plans and backups I have rarely needed to use the archives - not even sure I know how anymore Lew
  8. Rob: sure you can clean them up for an hourly fee I use to go around their plan and take snapshot views of all the "things" needing fixing then document how long it took to fix each one before fixing I would ask if they wanted to fix them Lew
  9. Graeme: ver 10 introduced .plan files I wish CA would add the ver id giving .planX9 I have to add it to all my file names so I know what version it was created with Lew
  10. Ben: not nice of CA to remove that ability I guess you will have to keep X8 loaded it doesn't really hurt to do so its probably best to start converting them do a few a day and soon they will all be done Lew
  11. Michael: renaming would not work ver 9 and earlier files were stored by floor so there is also .pl0 and .pl2 etc Lew
  12. I realized by ver 10 that if your clients use the client viewer be prepared to be THEIR tech support and training dept Lew
  13. the link give dbx requiring login Lew
  14. one of my rules is spend money on things that can't be changed later ram can be added (up to max) HD's can be added externally get the best gaming card and PC you can afford get an i7 with as many cores as you can afford newer versions of any software have trouble running on older versions of windows its just a reality Lew
  15. Brown Tiger: I use a 1/2" border on page 0 then everything is placed within that border to avoid cut-off at the print shop I find it best not to go right to the edge Lew
  16. I never say "everyone" I say "most" or "just about everyone" there are always a few holdouts Lew
  17. Like Lew said there is no problem with Chief David: Ummm, I never said that ... Lew
  18. Bernie: I know you don't want to hear it but just about everyone uses PDF first why don't you want to do that ? Lew
  19. Karel: yes, only one terrain copy the plan and make the changes both plans can be sent to the layout as the before and after Lew
  20. The file format itself won't change Mark: probably not but it did with ver 10.3 to 10.4 Lew
  21. Emma: the X3 hardware locks will not work on X8 they only work for X3 you have to buy new locks and they cost $$$ Lew
  22. Emma: you would still need two hardware locks if you plan to run both PC's at the same time if you only want to run one PC at a time then you just move the hardware lock I prefer the hardware lock for many reasons Lew
  23. yes, CA still has hardware locks but they cost extra Lew
  24. IT would be nice to be able to pull the info directly from the model though Michael: this is where BIM would come into play ... Lew
  25. Simon: while some are using X9 for real - the caveat is that it is not official and it could change even after the official release CA can issue updates very rare that they would "break" something - but .... if you are concerned about running for "real" then its probably best not to Lew
