  1. It's best not to change the extension just zip the file and then post it Lew
  2. Kevin: ahhh, the tools ..... yes, CA should stay current and offer tools that allow for meeting code I suspect that would require $$$ and resources and CA may not have those to spare thus, we end up having to use workarounds Lew
  3. Larry: probably best to contact CA's tech support Lew
  4. It's my understanding that Chief builds attic walls for use by auto-roof generator Chief builds them because it is programmed to believe it needs them supposedly if you take the need away - then chief won't build them how to control all of this ??? not my forte I usually make them invisible or have my partner fix the plan Lew
  5. Here is a link to the clientviewer download http://www.chiefarchitect.com/resources/viewerrequest.php it is a "crippled" version of Chief to be used by clients to view and markup plans Lew
  6. Kevin: I agree it would be nice if Chief was code-compliant but it never has been code-compliant and probably never will be while the 2012 codes are out and 2015 codes are on the way many jurisdictions are still using 2009 0r 2006 and some aren't even using the IRC or IBC codes some don't even use any codes to speak of even if a state has adopted a code set each county and/or town can modify those codes as needed Chief's plan check only looks at the most basic codes and even then doesn't try very hard Lew
  7. Sandi: probably best to contact CA's tech support Lew
  8. it seemed smoother than CA on my desk top Nick: you should probably contact CA's tech support this just doesn't seem right Lew
  9. you should be able to contact CA's customer service on Monday and get one unless someone has one Lew
  10. Gerry: thanks, that's what I tried after I posted mainly just wanted to pi$$ and moan about how annoying this process is He sent two plans as alternatives so I imported both sets of textures into two folders in the user library then merged them and ended up with 35 duplicates which then had to be deleted Lew
  11. My partner sent me a plan today with lots of new textures I asked him to BACKUP ENTIRE PLAN as I remember that is probably the only way to get everything to me so now I have that folder but I don't remember what to do with it I'm not sure what to do next - haven't done this in years I suspect something to do with import materials ? what a PITA this is Chief should just allow for these to be stored in the plan so it can be sent as ONE file Lew
  12. yes, that is what had to be done in Chief for X4 and X5 or use the 32-bit version of Chief, which shares the library with the 64-bit version Lew
  13. Mac's can only do 32-bit according to CA check the release notes Lew
  14. sorry, not my forte fairly certain you need to start with cad not pictures many vendors have .DWG or .DXF symbols of their products for download you could then edit them as needed and save in library as new symbols same with .SKP symbols from the google warehouse Lew
  15. to use .skp files from the google warehouse you would need to upgrade to at least Chief X1 but then you would be limited to s.kp ver 6 files unless you can use the free ver of Sketchup to save as .skp ver 6 then around X2 or X3 Sketchup 7 came then Sketchup 8 and now Sketchup 2014 so the later the version of Chief you get the more flexibility with .SKP and other file formats that chief has added since ver 9.5 (many) due to a convoluted library system I would avoid X3 - big time it used to be necessary to create detailed symbols in Sketchup (free or PRO) then import into chief starting around Chief X4 most symbols can be made within chief Lew
  16. Gene: .DWG is proprietarty to AUTODESK maybe they are enforcing it now ??? .DXF was developed by 3rd parties Lew
  17. old school method: prtscr captures everything on the screen alt-prtscr captures the active window only then paste into a photo editor and save as .jpg starting with Vista windows has a built-in screen capture feature (I've never used it yet) Lew
  18. Michael: hmmm, looks like I was in the right ballpark http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Haswell-Core-i3-vs-i5-vs-i7-Which-is-right-for-you-475/ Lew
  19. Michael: thanks for the clarification why do they not use common sense then with the names ? oh well, I thought I was getting near the top used common sense instead of research Lew
  20. these may help http://gfps.k12.mt.us/Schools/GreatFallsHigh/gfh/departments-staff-and-links/teachers/davidheimann/documents/Garagehandout_000.pdf http://www.smgov.net/PDFPagesHandler.ashx/191/191/uploadedFiles/Departments/PCD/Zoning/Full-Public-Draft-ZO.pdf http://www.oshawa.ca/documents/BLDG023.pdf plenty more on google - especially under images (link way to big to post here) Lew
  21. This is one major aspect where they fall short no, there are many others great software that could be really really great it does continue to get better with each release could they get it all done at once ? - probably not so we continue to ask and ask and ask and like Christmas we get some of our wish list... Lew
  22. it helps to say them as you use them if you use them enough and say them every time - then maybe if you say them out loud then the "funny people" may come to take you away anyways the older I get the harder it gets to remember them and the more I say them out loud Lew
  23. Many, many years ago Intel stopped using speed to name their chips nowdays they are I3, I5, I7 and I7 is one of the best when I bought my Win7 PC in Jan I made sure I had I7 Lew
  24. my take on the ML is that if you have to double check and triple check and re-check then is it really worth using and relying on it ??? since ver 9.5 I have gotten a sense that without a LOT of manual fussing that its just not useful some users take the time and export to Excel and then apply "magic" and can then get reliable results I never had a client that was willing to pay for this effort Lew
  25. Mydog: what's wrong with your processor speed ? you may want to consider getting an Nvidia video card Lew
