Glen: I usually wait until various solutions are posted to make that determination and who are making the postings when I see "experienced" chiefers offering workarounds then .... Lew

try a right click on empty desktop space then select Nvidia from the context menu this should give you the Nvidia control panel some laptops are set to use shared ram until configured to use the video card instead Lew
-
it's workarounds like this that make Chief so frustrating when X6 beta came out I started keep a list of each thread dealing with a workaround or a bug when I reached over 100 soon after the official release I gave up Lew

SSD, their support is much, much better Gerry: I think you meant SSA Lew
-
been using Norton for decades no issues here Lew

Gerry: I agree, many, many users have been using XP with Chief the same with Vista I hear that Win 10 is coming in 2015 I would have waited to upgrade from Vista till then but my PC died during an ice storm power surge so I went with Win 7 I am a light user of chief but was having no issues with Vista Lew

Mainstream support of Windows 7 is scheduled to stop in Jan (2015) Extended support ends 2020 Lew

once again CA has seemed to screw-up the library system It looked like they had fixed most of the issues - but now ??? I still have outstanding requests for imporvements but I'm hoping they will get the library stable and then leave it alone for many releases after that .... Lew

Tommy: if you already downloaded X6 from the Digital Locker then X5 will no longer be available I always save the actual downloads to my HD, not just the downloader executable to get X5 now you will need to contact CA's customer service but they will probably require that you buy the DVD Lew

for future attribution it is best to put your name in the file name otherwise it will be impossible to remember who created what down the road I have saved every symbol posted on this forum since 2004 (and much more) in the beginning I would add the creators name then it became too much Lew

other vendors besides HP are offering new win7 PC's Win 8/8.1 has been less than popular the newest update to 8.1 may change that ? Lew
-
probably should check with tech support as to why this happened it shouldn't happen sounds like a real PITA to deal with Lew

Cad To Walls tool is very "iffy" probably best to import the floorplans and trace over with chief walls Lew
-

maybe create a dimensioned floor plan and send to layout then create a top view or use the cross-section slider to get the 3D view then overlay the 3D onto the 2D floorplan in layout ? you might want to post your request in the Suggestions section of this forum maybe CA will add it to a future release ? Lew

Hmmm, maybe CA shut the program down ? Lew

Rich: thanks yeah, its the negative points that I think will cause "trouble" no one can object to receiving positive points Lew

What's the difference between a floor joist and a beam?
lbuttery replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
I got curious enough to do a google for a construction dictionary the first one I looked at matched my understanding of the difference (limited) http://www.dictionaryofconstruction.com/definition/joist.html http://www.dictionaryofconstruction.com/definition/beam.html I was assuming a "joist" was a 2x? - seems they can be thicker key seems to be that they are support for floors or ceiling key for beam is transferring load to a vertical member http://www.dictionaryofconstruction.com/definition/rim-joist.html rafters for a roof would seem to be the same as "joists" for floors and ceilings - 2x? yet the industry gave them a different name http://www.dictionaryofconstruction.com/definition/rafter.html I'm sure most on this forum already know this - but I got curious and I'm sure newbies will read this thread in the future Lew -
I bought them way back - ver 10 days along with a few other collections didn't use them much but business never grew as intended due to economy going "boom" and my health declining at the same time I also got them on sale - a very big sale Lew

upgrade question - is anyone using Vista with 6.0?
lbuttery replied to wkshank's topic in General Q & A
yes, latest Chief Premier is X6 your title was confusing while X6 will run on Vista it would perform better on Win 7 or Win 8 with a lower/slower/older cpu ??? try it - then buy a new PC if it doesn't perform well Lew -
upgrade question - is anyone using Vista with 6.0?
lbuttery replied to wkshank's topic in General Q & A
sorry, your title says ver 6, yet the post says ver 10 ??? while some were able to get ver 9.5 to run on Vista - it was very chancy even if ran it probably didn't run well so I seriously doubt if ver 6 would run on Vista Lew -
try this path - adjusting for your name C:\Users\LEW\Documents\Chief Architect Premier X6 Data\Database Libraries Lew
-
Mark: I generally recommend buying Premier for "everyone" even a homeowner doing only their house once the project is done - they can sell it and recoup most of the money just about anyone in business should have Premier Lew
