  1. I don't see a problem with having files on a drive different than the OS. Be careful when using network or removable drives. If they get disconnected at a critical time that could cause problems. Also, drive failure can affect just a single file. If so other operations in other software or other files may work fine. Copy Paste operations can fail due to software, hardware, or OS problems. They can be difficult to diagnose. It is true we have had our share of copy paste problems in Chief. I have also seen copy paste problems that were due to reasons such as hardware, third party software (such as anti-virus software), malware or viruses. I would encourage you to continue to work with support to attempt to isolate the problem.
  2. Transparency in pdf is supported in pdf 1.4 and higher. See this document: http://partners.adobe.com/public/asn/en/print_resource_center/Transparency-DesignGuide.pdf Some printer drivers may not support that level. I noticed the first PDF in this post is at PDF version 1.3. If transparency is not supported the image has to be flattened, which may explain some of the pix-elated problems if the transparency is being flattened. Also if the PDF printer is printing to postscript (which most do) there may be limits to it's ability to render transparency: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparency_%28graphic%29 I believe we are supporting PDF version 1.4 and are not going to postscript.
  3. Knowing the recent file list change did the trick narrows the focus quite a bit. In the case of recent files - are any of the files in the recent file list on removable media or network locations that are not always available?
  4. Apparently the number of undo's can affect performance. I stand corrected by our development team. In my experience changing the idle time will have more effect on performance than changing the number of undo's.
  5. Max undo should not affect the speed as you only ever do or undo once each time. The idle time would make a difference. If you have an ssd drive it can speed up your undo/redo as well. You can change where undo files are saved under prefs>General>Folders. Also it bears mentioning again, slow undo redo is very often caused by too many temp files on Windows OS. Doing a cleanup of the temp files often speeds up the entire computer. I'm not sure if anyone has checked this but, If X6 was configured to use a different folder than the default it could explain the difference in speed as well.
  6. Thanks Ben, I didn't see that other post, I think you are correct on the diagnostic. It's odd that some didn't see the problem while others did, I'll have to go look at this on Doug's computer and see if I see the same results as I see.
  7. Do you get the same problem using the save as pdf option? It would be good to have the plan and layout to troubleshoot.
  8. If I'm not mistaken I think some battered wall scenarios involve a single thickness top to bottom but the wall is tilted. (For example a block retaining wall.) While there are tools in Chief that allow you to create a battered wall look it would be great to have more general control of wall thickness and profile.

  10. I agree, it would be nice to select an area to print similar to the emf export tool.
  11. If you just need to print a small section: Zoom in to the area you want to see, Open the print dialog. Choose "current view", then select the paper size and orientation.
  12. In my experience deleting temporary files is safe. You can do this by going to the properties of the hard drive and clicking on disk cleanup and making sure the temporary files check is selected. I would recommend closing any running applications and reboot the computer prior to deleting the files.
  13. You may need to go into default settings and change edit the primary unit to '-" again a ok out to get it to display properly
  14. Open preferences -> find Unit Conversions. See if the ' or " items allow you to delete them. If they do delete them close and reopen preferences. I think this is a bug in that a user can add an additional ' and save it.
  15. The file extension is not important when using print to file. .plt, .prn either way it works the same. The data that is sent to the printer is placed into the file to be replayed when it is opened and sent to the actual printer. What is important is that both you and the person who is using the file have the exact same printer driver. If you have windows 8 and they have windows 7 that may not be possible. As far as the HP 500 and other printing issues; make sure to work with our technical support to try to find a solution.

  17. Richard, I have seen issues with this where the Windows Text size was set differently causing display issues from one computer to another. In Windows 7 this is in: Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display Where you adjust your font display size. This display size affects how the GDI draws fonts and can affect how fonts display on Windows. (You can see small differences going to MAC from Windows as well.) I have also seen some Windows 8 computers shipped with defaults that set the text size to 125% instead of the default 100%. This is typically with small high dpi screens, You should verify that these settings are the same on both computers.

  21. I have tracked down and fixed a number of printing crashes. Most all of them were due to print drivers. It would be helpful to have you contact the support team. Let them know what your default printer is. One notable fix for windows printer problems: 1. Open your printer properties using the Windows Print dialog (Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers on win7) 2. Make sure your defaults are correct for landscape paper size etc. 3. Make sure to click OK when you exit the dialog. Some times updated print drivers can help as well. Please contact the support team so we can track it down. I'm fairly certain we can get it resolved.
  22. Curt, It seems to me that if IE and Firefox exhibit the same problem that it's not likely a browser issue. In reading up about hughesnet I see multiple mentions of their turbo proxy server. In some cases it appears that the browser may have proxy settings in place or the local hardware is setup to use the proxy. In some cases users have had luck eliminating the proxy in favor of directly accessing the web. The proxy they use caches pages to reduce latency to speed up browsing. If the server is requesting pages on your behalf prior to being logged in I could see that might be a possible explanation for the issue. In firefox you can check to see if proxy settings are enabled by opening settings and on the network tab clicking on settings. If it's enabled in your hardware I see some references to using a Hughesnet application to disable the proxy. I think it can be done on a site by site basis but am not certain. They don't seem to have much in the way of current information on troubleshooting. Your case is something we are concerned about, it has come up in our weekly meetings and we have tried to make changes that might help. Unfortunately, on our end we don't have a way to reproduce the problem and so far you are the only one we have seen that has described this intermittent inability to access the forum. I hope we can find out what the solution is.

  24. Of course you can, You have your browser set correctly:) You may get logged out if you use multiple devices. If you are having this problem we may have a solution for you.
