As far as I can tell, Chief has always centered the wall studs and then aligned the sides of the joists. Not sure why though and I always just move them over manually when I actually need to.

Just as an fyi for anyone having similar problems, there is a tech article that covers how to do a split level entry here: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00587/creating-a-split-level-entry-or-foyer-with-a-landing.html

Gap between foundation and house and house and roof
DBCooper replied to anchidinhome's topic in General Q & A
Like Gene, I would highly recommend that you post images directly (either as jpg or png type files) instead of as pdf files. I would also recommend posting the actual plan file too. For problems like this, it is much, much easier to figure out the problem when someone can open up the plan file and poke around. Sometimes people will even fix the problems and then repost the fixed plan. As a general rule, plan files will usually need to be "zipped' so that they can be posted here because this forum has some pretty silly limits. You need to make sure you have the plan file closed when you try to zip it otherwise it won't work and your plan will be empty. Even zipped, many plans will still be too big so you might need to delete things that aren't part of the problem (like fixtures and furniture). The other thing you can do is post a link to the plan from some online source like google drive or whatever. As for your problems, the gap between the roof and walls may be because you manually modified the wall heights (something you normally don't need to do). An easy way to fix this is to use the "reset to defaults" tool. As for gaps between your foundation and the house, sometimes this is a problem with your floor structure. If you do a search on this forum you may find a solution that works. There is also a tech article that may help: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00038/resolving-a-gap-between-floors-in-camera-views.html Hope this helps, if not, then post the plan. -
Printing Door Schedule - without it being within the plan pages
DBCooper replied to Janeldesigner's topic in General Q & A
I just put my schedules in cad details. You can setup your page size and scale for the detail and then print directly from there. -
Try turning on "details" in the reference display. You probably also want to turn off "xor".

Not sure how to remove the platform pieces in the doorway. I tried a test case and it seemed to work fine for me so you might need to post the plan so that someone can play around with it. This is not a typical situation so I am not surprised that Chief doesn't handle it well. As for the handrail, you could trying adding a complete break to the stair so that you can two stair sections with the one in the doorway narrower than the one on the other side. Or, you could just remove the handrail and manually use a molding polyline. In either case, I am not sure if that stairway will meet code because they are not supposed to narrow in the direction of egress. If this is new construction, you might want to tweak the design to avoid this problem. In your second picture, I think all you need to do is move your break point over a bit so your rail stops at the stair post. Michael mentions that this might automatically change but I think that only applies to the automatic openings that stairs make in railings. In your case, since you did not get an opening to begin with it shouldn't be a problem but you can always turn off "automatic rail openings" in your stair dialog if it does turn into a problem.

You need to use two materials, one for the riser and then a different one for the tread. Then you can rotate the one used for the riser to go the direction you want. And, if you want it to look right in vector views, you need to make sure to rotate the pattern and the texture (or keep them in sync).

Not sure why you have a railing going across where the stair is unless it is not actually connected to the landing. I would have to poke around the plan to know for sure. You could always just add a break to the landing edge and then manually remove the railing. As for the other stairs going through the doorway, it looks like you need to make a hole in the floor platform. Stairs don't automatically make holes in floors and you would see the same kind of problem if you just drew a stair going up to the ceiling. You can probably do this with invisible walls and then make the room type open below or maybe even a manual hole in the floor. You might be able to use the auto stairwell tool but it might not work in a complicated situation like this.

Unless you need to show it in a camera view, I would either just draw it in the plan with cad or use a cad detail. Not sure what you are asking for here. Where do you want to show square footage? What square footage do you want to show? There are bunch of different tools that might do what you want. Probably best to start a new topic for new and unrelated questions though.

Just an FYI, the reference display can display either the floor above, the floor below, or even some other floor (and even one from another plan!). You can always click on the "floor number" toolbar button and take a look at the reference display settings to see what floor and layer set it is using. Also, you don't need to delete the foundation and rebuild it to align your walls. You can go to the foundation floor (or any floor) and just move the wall close and then use the wall align tool.

Note Schedule isn't showing notes. What am I doing wrong?
DBCooper replied to DIYJon's topic in General Q & A
You put your note into your "new" plan and you made the cad detail with the note schedule in your "as built" plan.- 1 reply

It might be you. You definitely don't want to use "cad detail from view". All that will do is turn your schedule into cad which is fairly useless. I put all my schedules in cad details and then just send the cad detail to layout the same way I send all of my other cad details. If you make a habit of using the project browser, this is actually pretty easy.

I didn't get any errors either but I did see some problems with how you setup your rooms and a wall alignment issue. I really can't think of a reason why you couldn't use auto roofs with this plan and even auto rooms. All I think you need to do is build the second floor exterior walls to match the first floor ones and then just designate the big room as "open below" and then you probably wouldn't need to mess around much with the rooms. See if this basic tech article helps: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00078/creating-an-open-below-room.html

How do I change default elevation from inches to fractional feet?
DBCooper replied to cbucks's topic in General Q & A
You can change how things look in the dialogs by clicking on the "number style" button. This is only temporary though and will get reset the next time you launch Chief. I don't know of a way to change it permanently. -
Nor sure what Eric's answer was, but as long as you don't have "always present" checked, the program should already work the way want. If this is not working for you, then you probably need to post your plan.

Oh, I love this game. What do I get if I win? Maybe your roof planes are actually on another floor? Maybe your view is not using the layer set you think it is? Maybe your roof planes are not on the layer that you think they are? Maybe you are using a line style or color that doesn't show in plan view? Maybe your roof planes are actually in a different plan that you have turned on using reference display in the camera view but not in plan view? I could probably come up with some even more obscure cases if it's not one of these. Of course, you could always post the plan but how would that be any fun?

Yes, of course they do: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/videos/ https://www.chiefarchitect.com/training/ And there is also this forum, which in my opinion is one of Chief's best resources for new people and long time users. Also, just my opinion but based on many years of using Chief, Chief is easy to "learn" but much harder to "master".

How to hide floors in orthographic view/perspective view
DBCooper replied to VHaess's topic in General Q & A
You can use "edit active view". Or, you can click on the camera in a plan view and use "open object":. And, if you always want your floor overviews to work this way, you can change it in your camera defaults. -
Are you using X15? If so, just click in the room you want and you will see "auto room dimensions" on the edit toolbar or menu. If you want more control over what the dimensions locate, here are some tech articles: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00941/changing-what-dimensions-locate.html https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03162/generating-automatic-dimensions-that-follow-nkba-standards.html

Actually, the jog is happening because your railings are not aligned with each other in plan view.
-
For your rocks, it looks like you are using a distribution path. If you open it up, and use the "edit" button, you can change the way the rocks work. If you make them relative to the terrain height they will sit on the terrain whatever height it is. Looks like Robert beat me on the rocks but since I beat him on the fence, I call it "win" for both of us.
-
You can also just turn off "automatic heights" for the stairs and then adjust the top and bottom to be whatever you want. If you make your fence "no room definition" it will fix your deck railing. Not sure why the fence affects the deck though. Might want to fix the alignment on the deck rail that joins the invisible deck rail because you have a slight jog.

You could make one yourself pretty easily. Just create a simple object that is the right shape and size and then convert it into a light symbol. Or even easier, just make the object and set the material to be emissive so it looks like it is glowing.
