  1. Chief is a program that some day you won't need any cad. I don't draw lines anymore but all my cad detail are already in my lib. I just take the one I need and modify as I need it. In the future I'm sure we will be able to get all details from the 3d model and never draw lines again. I just hope I'm not dead before that happens.
  2. I'm not sure where he keeps them ,if at all. It was basically using a symbol with text attached to a post, there was a problem manipulating the symbol but it was quite genius at the time. Maybe he will see this and chime in.
  3. I don't know, they just said Dell has to supply the driver and they refuse. I haven't tried the delete everything and start over with a clean install, just trying to not have to re-install everything, takes 3 days for me. Even though my computer is still great ( with a few mods.) I think it's time for Santa to bring me a new machine. Mine has lasted 5 years.
  4. In preferences set "color off" to black and white but everything will be black and white. I use Grayscale and get black and white vector views. Could be in the camera setup. Post the plan and get a quick answer.
  5. My motto A.B.S.= Always be saving
  6. Yep that's what happens, I had deleted the recovery partition when I added a 1 gb ssd drive to my system. So I really had none so when I went to upgrade I created a 400mb recovery partition back in so win.10 could install, then the dell driver problem came up. Even Microsoft said they couldn't fix it. Has to be fixed by DELL.
  7. I use cad details for all of the shear situation, as Chief doesn't address this mostly at all, but there are some details in the cad detail section of the lib. to get you started. A while back Scott Hall (DSHALL) did a series of videos on the 3d holdowns, an his method worked pretty good ,if you want to take it that far.
  8. Yes, sometimes I just figure that people already know how to do it. I haven't forgotten how to do it, just thought that showing the plant DBX was enough and anyone would catch on from that. But I must admit I don't put a Lot of thought into doing video's, 1 take and no editing. But I do agree that having everything already set up in our templates can lead to a "How'd I do that" moment for sure.
  9. I still can't upgrade to 10 b/c Dell which now owns Alienwear will not update their drivers for Win. 10 on older machines. They want you to buy a new one. Mine is only 5 years old but I have modified it with new stuff. Even Microsoft said no go, so now I have to get a new one I guess
  10. I don't really need to show them in 3d, too much work, I just note them on the framing plan and reference them to the foundation plan.
  11. Here is a short video http://www.screencast.com/t/jnlkuc4xlIfP
  12. Lock framing-trusses just so you don't move or change them, but once you get acquainted with Chief you really don't have to lock them. You could also just turn them off.
  13. Too much to list here, but I do these all the time. I always do an as-built plan first save it and then continue doing the new addition. When framing Chief will fill in areas that don't have trusses with conventional framing so put your trusses in the existing first and lock them. Then frame the new. There are lot of guys here that train but make sure you look at all the Chief videos and youtube videos. There are lots of them. For you even the old video's will help you get a feel for how things work, not like AutoCAD at all.Chief is a room based program.
  14. Yes it's manually done by you. Chief does not do it automatically. Draw one and copy paste
  15. ALIENWARE, high end gaming computers, is what you need. a bit pricey but good.
  16. I have figured out that if printing to PDF and in color, you need to make your fill lines on the black side, color wise, to get them to print correctly or they disappear.
  17. BTW, if you move your camera out of a room just hit f5 to turn them back on.
  18. Yes , it is possible. The problem is that Chief doesn't cut the rafter off at the ceiling line like it should.
  19. here is a short video on how to make 2 walls occupy the same space http://screencast.com/t/5oAalyvwV
  20. Did you make the 1/2 wall a "No room def" wall, then slide it into place I have been doing that for many years.
  21. Scott, you did a great video on this a while back, it's a bug for sure and needs to be fixed.
  22. You can use 2 walls, one F.H. glass wall, that a door will work in, and a 1/2" railing wall set to have "no room definition" on top of each other also. two walls in one space. Several ways of doing it.
  23. Hows that, I haven't found a way. The framing sticks down below the ceiling every time. raising the wall does nothing for me. 2 different rafter sizes like 2x6 and 2x10 just don't work from inside aliging the tops. all I'm saying is the rafters do not align at the ceiling height.
