  1. Your bios must support and be changed to ACHI. Make sure to flash your bios with the newest firmware prior to the swap. Google should help you here
  2. I earn substantially more on freelance over my typical 9-5. It really comes down to confidence in my own ability and presence, feel(ebb and flow) with your client. I charge by the job, which is where the confidence comes in...it may take me 9 iterations to get it right or maybe just 2, and sometimes I get it on the first try. I enjoy this method as I work through til the client is thrilled and I push myself in the meantime. People seem to really get into the handshake deal, most of my clients are referred to me. They feel they are a part of the process, that they have a say. The relationship is what matters, if you make your client feel that they are being heard and taken care of then they respect the value that you place on your services. Something I find to be very important, is being honest about your workflow and time available. Inflate your sense of timing, and then come in slightly under that mark. Granted I have the security of a well-paying 9-5, so I can gamble a bit on my freelance...but that gamble has more than paid off. I am upfront and honest about my limits in hours, walking the tight rope of just enough billing info to give to the client. Typically for a kitchen remodel and small additions I tell them it will cost between $800-1.2K for takeoffs/as-builts, $4-5.5K for arch CD's and design(which credits the as-built fee), and another $800-2.5K for structural if I can perform prescriptive work. Leave room to charge for additional services in case you are getting tanked by the agreement. I put place-markers for cabinets, and let the cab vendor do the finite details and add a couple renderings. If you would like me to design the cabinets and prep an order I will charge. If you would like additional renderings I have to charge for the potential income from my rendering machine being down..etc, etc Going over projected cost is all timing though, and hopefully you never need to. I explain that the design process is the fun part, and is inexpensive in retrospect to all of the annotation work and county req's. I manage my CA time log to get a feel for my target revenue. Hope this helped, a different perspective maybe
  3. If you're intended upgrade is simply graphics and this machine is used primarily in an office than I would strongly encourage purchasing the Gigabyte Aorus 1070gtx egpu for around $600(if your laptop supports it)...it has served me very well for graphic intensive programs, otherwise I would take a look at some of the other laptop upgrade threads.
  4. Hey Mr. Scott, any moves on your end...did you end up with a different software?

  5. for reference, from the 2016 CEC, highlighting is from the adoption table and nothing to do with this topic
  6. Distribution paths work well for landscaping, especially spline distribution ares with randomized rotation and scale: also with minimal effort you can do some vectorwork-ish stuff in chief using slab cylinders, transparent gradients and png materials:
  7. I made these in CA using CA's blocks and some of my own modifications..simple really. Could be made to be color aw/overlays etc:
  8. Google drive will not support co-authoring/file locking/live-authoring, per several tech support agents I've spoken with whereas Microsoft onedrive and dropbox will. My user catalog and all of chief process' are in onedrive and work well for the most part except for this one glitch
  9. Let me know their cost, maybe next time I'll compete
  10. Post the 3ds and I'll have a looksie
  11. I can confirm that nearly EVERY time I right click in an open/save window w/in CA, chief crashes. Windows 10 CA x10 saving in onedrive. I think there is a conflict with file locking
  12. There was a Louis CK comedy bit talking about how angry people would get at poor service with an airline. His response was something along the lines of: isn't it amazing that we can fly?(albeit a bit more graphic and hilarious) I have had my own frustrations w/X10, and I have encountered this error before where I had to revert back to a previous auto-save. I do miss the pic you had up before as your profile avatar..I laughed @ the new one. funny!
  13. Frequently when I have had a plan open and I have been working for a while, I will go to either save the existing plan or open a new one for reference. In the save window, I will often hit ctrl+sh1ft+n to create a new folder for my plan and often times chief crashes. Also, if in an open window I right click in the window, chief crashes. I can't reproduce this every time, but it happens A LOT!
  14. You're the man, thank you for the effort. This plan is such a mess, I was in such a rush, saved me!
  15. I almost sent you a PM before I posted this b/c I figured you would have the solution; Of course as soon as I read your response I thought "DOH!, he's right," but alas, I manually dragged the walls up and the problem still exists. I agree that joinery would be my first assumption for this sort of thing, but it reminds me of a poly face issue I've had before. I guess I will have to dig into this one myself when I can find the patience
  16. Just tried your suggestion. Triangles still exist even if I remove all texture files from the cln'g mat'l. Maybe it has to do with insufficient lighting. I haven't dug in on this one yet but thought someone might save me the time if they had encountered something similar.
  17. I've ran into this problem before and don't remember the solution. Working on this kitchen design and the cln'g mat'l is being such a nuisance. Id prefer presenting this particular kitchen in PBR as the levels of sheen really make this stand out in a way that I can't achieve in regular 3d view. 554 MINER RD goofing.plan
  18. Hey Eric,

Being the guru of Auto-roof I wanted to ask, Is it possible to have a shed roof in roof group 0 slope down to a hip which serves as the high shed on a lower garage roof group 1?

I can do it manually but I could not get it to work with auto-build

Here is a terrible pic taken by my company owner for reference:

    1. solver

      solver

Not sure I understand how the roofs are set up, but I'm guessing no.

What might be handy when using roof groups is roof directives in walls tied to a roof group, so one wall could have multiple roof directives, each tied to a specific roof group.

All kinds of workarounds used by the Home Designer users that do not have manual roofs.

  19. Off the top of my head I would guess that checking “cabinet filler” in the .dbx might get you what you want...just can’t remember if that retains paneling
  20. Well my idea of phenomenal ended up being WAY too large a file for CA to handle. SO this will have to do for now: lime wash brick texture.calibz
  21. Ha, I removed that line...but appreciate the candor. I can probably make something pretty phenomenal for you.. gonna give it a shot..stay tuned
  22. Check the ticker for "blend with texture" in the brick mat'l dbx under the "texture" tab -would be the might-be-good-enough solution. Alternatively I could build you some good reflection, bump, normals, and ambient occlusions maps. Have an image of what you're looking for
  23. That would be the CAD layer's text style that your current layer-set defaults to. If you were drawing a line with an anno/layer set that defaulted to "CAD,default" then go to layer management and see which text style is being used for that layer. You can set a new text style or modify the existing there.
