  1. Love this design, beautiful lines, great respect for the exterior and natural light, awesome mixture and nod to certain styles... given what you've put together I would venture a guess that you are already wrestling with this, but the wine cellar doesn't feel natural to the space, seems like an after thought at the moment. Looking forward to seeing a finalized design if you're willing to share, nice work!
  2. Viking, Thermador, and sub-zero all do I'm sure
  3. Not a bug, any customization in 1 toolbar configuration is for that configuration only, it is not global, nor is there an option to make global changes to multiple configurations. I would venture a guess that I have spent more hours than anyone could conceive of spending on toolbar configs. I've been building them out for the touchscreen environment. There are a host of problems when trying to extend your customization to other configurations. Biggest problem in describing my methods is that that nomenclature used by CA doesn't easily distinguish between different elements of the toolbar schema. I start by making a master config including all possible "toolbars"(The individual toolbar sets that can be dragged and docked or floating anywhere you like. I make them for MEP, Dimensioning, Framing etc. Once I have ALL of them built, I copy/paste, say, the MEP configuration, and then as SNestor shows, I un-check everything that I don't want on the MEP config. I do this for all of the various toolbar configs that I enjoy. That way when switching configs, there are a number of items of toolbars that never disappear, with only a core set of toolbars switching dependent on what I am working on. When you make a global change, you have to do the copy/paste deal all over again. When you make a localized change you should make it in the master config and then copy back again... Cumbersome, but I have sped his up over time. To really be efficient you have to do some pre-planning for an extensive overhaul if that's what you desire. My 3d toolbars took a crazy amount of time to setup. Posting an example:
  4. Might consider getting a bit further down the line on this project, tough to discern what needs to be done for these roofs without having knowledge of the project and what aspects of the .plan are correct. Seems like your 1st floor elevation is too short, would be helpful to have windows and doors in place or north marker and elevation references. If someone were to ffer help at this junction they would need to invest time into familiarizing themselves with your project first.
  5. just rent Amazon EC2 if it ever gets to the point... sit in your living room working from a small touch screen tablet linked to 100 amazon machines that just laugh at CA. I may set this up next year, So I can truly work from anywhere
  6. Many thanks to Graham, I have told him in PMs and publicly that his donated time is extremely generous. I've also shared some PMs with him voicing frustrations for the lack of guidance from the developers on system specs in these forums. This is a fun thread, and its interesting, I would not call it difinitive To respond to what you said, and speaking for myself, I agree with you whole heatedly, but I was once a dumb 20 year old kid looking to get into the industry and wondering what system specs I should focus on, would've been nice if I was spared all of my failures by a truly definitive approach to system building...then again maybe that's what I can attribute some success to, perseverance. ...I still can't successfully build an ad hoc network..been trying for 10 years
  7. Really starting to have a disdain for this thread though I have tried to avoid voicing too much of my own opinion..a lot of hard work has gone into this thread, which I appreciate... This has not been standardized testing. No real methods of testing have been established. No specialized software has been implemented for monitoring the tests. NO COMPUTER COMPONENTS HAVE TRULY BEEN ISOLATED...No one here is using a test bench with the same components and swapping out one hardware component. The tests have only demonstrated a couple of scenarios that are completely unrealistic for nearly every CA user. Testing based on bias will always have a higher probability of supporting the bias. Why are we doing known CPU intensive tasks and being surprised by the results? Load in 4k textures on a PBR and tell me how great your CPU is or go swap in a laptop 5400 RPM for your NVME and try browsing the library with your awesome CPU. Excuse the sarcasm but by no means has this been an indicator of a singular system component being the biggest bang for the buck. I've said it so many times I can't even count, All 5 of the machines I have used extensively have performed as well as the next in real world use with little to no noticeable difference, which includes a gamut of various clock speeds and core configurations both AMD and Intel. Spending $2K on a CPU is not going to make CA feel 10 times faster than spending $200. This post by @BrownTiger got brushed over and no one really responded to it which blows my mind, again we're discussing some industry known topics here: Not meaning to sound like a jerk but this thread does not paint the whole picture of using this software and it is painfully obvious to me and misleading to people out there shopping components.
  8. Yes suggested, work around being that you can pull an elevation into your model since it is live, snap to whatever you need to snap to, and then pull your camera outside of the model and it will retain it's CAD
  9. Getting ready for purchasing the next iteration of the surface book for 2020 has led to some new developed methods for touchscreen navigation in CA. Just posted two short videos for anyone interested showcasing this setup using an iPad Pro 12.9” 1st generation, an Apple Pencil, and touchpad pro software to remote into my desktop. Posted the vids in my symbols and content thread in my sig. shown here:
  10. POST 28 A pair of videos highlighting methods to use an iPad to control Chief Architect remotely CLICK ME TO GO BACK TO THE INDEX!!!
  11. 1. Make an elevation note type "front elevation" and "rear elevation " etc. 2. Drop note schedule on front camera elevation to include only note types "front elevation" 3. Place Notes on front elevation. Use the marquee Select Similar tool to select all Notes. Also select your note schedule. ctrl+c to copy 4. Go to your rear elevation and Ctrl+v paste 5. Change all note types on rear elevation to type "rear elevation ". Go to your rear elevation's schedule and uncheck front elevation type notes and select rear elevation type notes. Alternatively you can send a snippet of just your note schedule to your layout
  12. AGREED..don’t enjoy using X-10 when I have to, its that noticeable.
  13. eh, I kind’ve agree...but, thats like saying Substance Painter shouldn’t post clips from video games their software helped create...when its now a major construct of the whole process. Almost like saying buy CA and it will make you a great architect and designer and renderer and we’ll give you a PC and all the tools to go with it. I dunno, I like seeing someone push the capabilities of the product.
  14. Tying to create a vent schedule using custom windows and anything under 6" tall is automatically changed to 6". Is there any user control over this parameter?
  15. ‘CA is a cache monster in my opinion” I posted that somewhere else around here...totally agree about hard drive from testing and observation...great to see it broken down so eloquently...cheers and +1 still say that custom textures with 4K resolution requires a good vid card... I noticed a difference when I switched to pascal
  16. Also really depends on what you need training for, I know Alaskan probably has his hands full but he is an excellent coach..I went to him for Macro writing
  17. The Surface book will not allow you to undock while CA is running, it prompts you to close the program..it most likely has more to do with my library..would be my guess..this is getting off topic though, it does point to hardware related task however
  18. Yes, the surface book 2 base houses a 1060 card(probably setup this way so you can upgrade the keyboard base and graphics card without needing to buy a full system in the future) When the tablet portion is un-docked, the dedicated chip is the only active gfx processor and the onboard ram comes into play as graphics memory.
  19. THIS! and THISSSSSS!!!!! haha, The surface book 2 I tried out prompted a built in warning from CA that the graphics card wasn't sufficient for the library browser when it was undocked from its 1060 card. I had to set library preview from vector to standard in order for the library to be accessible with preview
  20. Cant you build the firebox and call it a facade for a gas insert? and then maybe someone trips and falls and accidentally rips out the gas insert on their way down after final inspection unbeknownst to you. My house is 3 stories and has a massive fireplace that kills a lot of floor space on all 3 floors...I'm still gonna be bummed if I ever take it out, something so satisfying about a wood burning fireplace
  21. Graham, first off, much praise and respect +1...You have, on several occasions, spent tens of hours of your own time for the benefit of the community. Thank You! I've done a lot of testing in CA, so I have a pretty good indicator of what's going on behind my own personal workflow in CA. Something I learned from reading this..turning off layers, interesting. Again, thanks. I would also guess that smoothing angle could effect builds..just a hunch, but for someone that never goes into 3d, I wonder if turning all symbol smoothing angles to 0 would have any impact on rebuild. A few things I will add as they are the industry standard and well known...Texture resolution absolutely has a direct correlation with graphics cards. I can't use 4k graphics in CA like I can in other programs that have optimized texture loading or texture baking. I had to convert all of my textures down to 1080 for CA to have the snappy system that I need. CA loaded textures, typically, are 512. A slow hard drive can be a bottleneck for a blazing fast machine..so can a slow graphics card or cheap FSB /bridge etc(mobo) CPU cache helps CA +1 to @Alaskan_Son I said similar things in Graham and I's previous thread-go-around about system setups. CA is constantly writing, it's easy for CA to write a Gig in 5 minutes, and every action performed in CA writes to your OS drive a little preference/log file. Library access is a huge part of all this as well as Library preview can load up your graphics card. Last thing I'll note is in conflict with what Graham stated as a general note, though he didn't specifically test for it. I can, with certainty, say that Layout is slower than plan, dependent on what is being sent to layout. I have a ,plan open right now that has a PDF imported to the page. That Plan view has been sent to layout and it is without a doubt slower to navigate/pan/zoom than the associated plan view.
  22. @Chopsaw crazy enough I was actually aware of one of Michael's methods for a change, but hoping for some sort of offset setting.. using his method scales the 2d image to be pretty small if using it in a legend with scaling...because it effectively increases the size of the 2d symbol
  23. post your .plan file please so we can take a look at whats going wrong
  24. Trying to snap to the center of a GFCI receptacle but the center of the 2d symbol includes the text "GFCI" which sets the snap off-center of the receptacle...can't remember, is there a way to fix this?
  25. I know that you were participating in the following thread but not sure if you saw that they added a wood floor generator: just a friendly FYI
