David: sorry, but I am retired and never understood terrain myself my partner did all out terrain work he is semi-retired and is only doing 3D renders and rays these days Lew
-
I would recommend doing each building in a separate plan then create a 3D symbol of the building and store each in the library then add each building symbol to the master terrain plan this method gives total freedom to adjust the terrain or the buildings without affecting the others while all buildings and the terrain can all be in the same plan it takes a master chiefer to control them while making changes to any of them Lew

probably rent to own you will pay more in the long run but the pain can be spread out you could also look here and on Ebay for a used older version I wouldn't go earlier than X4 just very with CA sales that the license can be transferred and the cost as non-first license can cost way more the seller should be willing to cooperate you could later upgrade to the newest version if you make some money Lew

Living Area Square feet notation disappears.

Michael: I can think of three places that would make more sense than "plan check" 1. Preferences - under "Reset Options" 2. Room Specification Dialog - under General 3. Plan Defaults Lew -
this design probably qualifies as a "duplex" check what the NC codes require for a "duplex" but the local county may have other requirements ? find out what counties she is searching in and check with the local permit office(s) Lew

house angled on lot instead of parallel to street - rotate site?
lbuttery replied to K-Lynn's topic in General Q & A
you can also have two plans one for the building - one for the site make a 3D symbol of the building and then store in the library then add the building symbol to the site plan and rotate as needed Lew -
Michael: I made my suggestions on the old forum starting in 2006 I made them repeatedly over the years as I retired I stopped making suggestions I now only respond when the issue(s) rear their head for the next user and they complain or request help doing so assures them they are not alone and gives a reminder to CA that I wasn't the only one looking for solutions to the issue(s) Lew

Exporting Floor Plans for Use in PowerPoint
lbuttery replied to Mintplanner's topic in General Q & A
I do historical presentations for my museum and extensive family history in the 1800's in the Niagara Falls region. I mainly use .jpg's in Chief's layout tool they are generally 40-60 pages in length I then save the layout to .PDF I find this easier to do rather than re-learn Powerpoint (I've had some classes) I don't have all the fancy transistions etc - but then again are they really needed ? If the .jpg's are saved directly from Chief to your HD I don't see why they couldn't be used in Powerpoint ? Another tool to consider is MS Onenote which allows for annotation of the .jpg's and live weblinks imports of emails and much more Lew -
Hi: probably best to contact tech support - hrs 7 AM - 5 PM Pacific Lew

yes, you can sell your license if its not current, check what it will cost to upgrade to current with active SSA then knock off $500 or so Lew
-
If they are there, the program will use them instead of Temporary Dimensions. They need to be deleted. I have always found this to be frustrating if I want a temp dimension I should be able to place one - not be hindered by this restriction very non user-friendly Lew

and once again this Gremlin strikes Lew

Rob: if you upgrade to X12 then your SSA will be current for 1st qtr 2021 whenever your SSA is current you get that upgrade for free if there is a good upgrade sale in Dec then consider using it otherwise, you may wish to wait until April or May then upgrade to X13 (X14 would then be free) but your fee for upgrade from X11 to X13 will be higher than going from X11 to X12 do the math and make a decision by having your SSA due date in April or May that gives you a chance to review each upgrade assuming released 1st qtr each time before having to renew your SSA again Lew

Software That Client Use To Manipulate CA Floor Plans
lbuttery replied to skoz44's topic in General Q & A
most of the HD titles can review and make SOME edits if the "edit flag" is set by Chief Premier and the titles are compatible versions HD PRO is very compatible with Premier as it has many of the same manual tools PRO costs $495 and if the client later decided to upgrade to Premier that cost is 100% included Note: PRO can't edit Premier features that is doesn't have Lew -
my understanding about Quadro cards matces Mick's reply Lew
-
Michael: I posted this suggestion many times over a decade ago I have stopped post suggestions I now respond to my favorite "issues" when they occur to someone else I don't know why but going to the manual is usually the last place people go as a 30+ yr Systems Analyst/programmer I like and was taught to make the GUI "user friendly" when an issue appears time and again - guess what ? - its an issue Lew
-
Michael: sorry, but it is non-intuitive to find that in Plan Check users will scour the menus, they will scour preferences, and defaults they will scratch their heads and they will post on the forum which has happened time and again over 15 years hence this thread - hence the prior threads CA has a setting in general plan defaults for "Show living area Label" why not have one right next to it for "Restore living area label" ? why bury it in Plan Check ? Lew
-
once again the "infamous" plan check solution that no one would ever think of doing without asking here I've been suggesting that CA fix this "newbie" stumble for almost 15 years now surely, they find a solution by now Lew

Pazzfam: I understand your need for less stress yes, you can make a living doing designs will it be less stressful ? I found clients want the designs tomorrow, if not yesterday soon I started saying "I have a two week backlog" even if I had nothing to work on one client looks at me on Sat after saying that and says "can I have it by Wed ?" I repeated my line and he says - by next Monday ? so I said "well, we are waiting for a client to respond about his design changes, so maybe I can get it started some" we have had to fire clients because they were too demanding I lived outside DC and was heading to Buffalo for Labor Day weekend I tell new client I am leaving that evening and won't be back till Tuesday He says "can you guarantee to have it done by Labor Day" I said sorry "can't help, you'll have to find someone else" this after he had verbally agreed to my contract and my spending 4 hrs getting started on the project then coming in and complaining that my contract excluded this and that I said but you agreed to the contract and price - "Nah, I didn't read it" another builder client was backlogged due to surgery and wanted us to straighten out the framing layouts the plan was a mess with a zillion layersets as he didn't understand them we fix the framing layout views I drive 45 minutes to deliver the plan and tell him its a draft and he needs to review it He calls later that day pissed off because he spent $200+ at the printers and then his guy took the plans to the building permit office and they red flagged a zillion issues most of them on the parts of the Layout we didn't touch I said, "why did you print all those copies" without reviewing our work ? so we hurry and fix our 3 issues plus all of his other issues and I drive again to deliver the layout - he hands the jumpstick to his secretary and says get this printed and get down to the permit office I said "wait, that is a draft, you need to review all the changes, etc." so I went home and added a clause to my contract that by printing the layout they agree that it was reviewed and found acceptable I could go on - but I think you get the idea Lew

SOLVED I called tech support my screen display was too large and the status bar and edit toolbar were hiding "off screen" in the upper right are the minimize, restore down, and close buttons she had me click on the "restore down" and I could see the status bar and the edit toolbar click it again and the screen size adjusted and the tool bars remained visible I suggested that they add this to the help guide and to the basic "User Interface" training video Oh well, learn something new every day Lew
-
thanks, but I already verified that was set no status bar in X9 or in X12 For X12 I have no Edit toolbar ? I select an object and it doesn't show ? I watched the basic "user interface" video and they describe them but not how to display them ? Lew
-
SOLVED - see below for solution its been awhile since I've tried to work on a project there used to be a status bar at the bottom of the screen that showed what the chosen object was and what the active layer was and the coordinates etc I can't find how to get that status bar to display ? what have I forgotten ? Lew
