  1. I thought I could do this back in 2005 using Photogrammatic software It just wasn't feasible then maybe now ? Lew
  2. Brad: HD PRO users can benefit from following Chieftalk as well PRO has many manual tools - same as Chief Premier Lew
  3. the Cad to Walls tool has been seriously lacking in usability since I started in 2005 I have never been able to have any luck with it every few years I try it - but still no joy Lew
  4. from the layout click on each of those unwanted layer sets it will go back to the plan then assign it to the desired layer set it will be tedious but it does go fast in the end you will have a "cleaner" plan/layout Lew
  5. dragging walls should only be used when necessary doing it wrong can really mess up the plan use the room settings to change wall heights or make the wall a half wall and then set accordingly watch the videos on the various techniques for setting wall heights and ceiling heights Lew
  6. ok, I found it online http://redpoint.iwarp.com/elefontpage.html I have also attached the .exe EleFont.zip
  7. maybe I just checked one HD and not there tomorrow I will turn on other PC and check that drive send me a reminder on Fri in case I forget to look Lew
  8. Chopsaw: no I don't haven't used it in years did it go away ? Lew
  9. also check out the free utility Elefont Lew
  10. Hi: My partner and I lived far apart I met with the clients and started the plan and then would email to my partner when I needed help with roofs and terrain and other cad details we used a naming convention of 1234_MAIN_ST_REMOD_190829_1745_LBX9.plan also MODEL = ASBUILT or ALT01, ALT02, etc where LB are my initials - his were JK - thus indicating who last worked on the plan plus date and time and Chief version the layout naming was similar using LAYPS = permit set and LAYCP = Client Presentation LAYCD = full construction documents to keep the plan and layout in sync we would do a double "save as" - first with the date and time then the 2nd without 1234_MAIN.plan and 1234_LAYPS.layout etc the double "save as" takes seconds to do Lew
  11. if you are referring to the IRC and IBC codes then the reply would be none that is officially referenced hence there is no way to change it Chief is based on "generic" code to be clear: the codes can vary state by state - locality by locality - also international for example VA is probably using the 2018 codes - however, each county and even some towns have added modifications either adding to or removing some sections of the code Lew
  12. Mike: I'm surprised someone hasn't chimed in yet this is not my forte so I have no advice except I have followed this forum daily since 2005 and I have never heard of anyone having to do framing as p-solids have you watched the training videos and checked the help guide etc on how to do framing ? Lew
  13. HD PRO users can benefit from following the Chietalk forum because PRO has many of the manual tools that Chief Premier has just remember the limitations of HD PRO when trying to apply the advice given Lew
  14. probably best to contact CA's customer service For Chief Premier there is a What's New PDF - not sure about PRO I would suspect that you could get by with printing out a few pages or chapters as needed BTW: Chieftalk is primarily for Chief Premier users - the HD products generally use the Hometalk forum However, HD PRO users can benefit from following Chieftalk as PRO has many of the same manual tools as Premier does just be aware of PRO's limitations when following advice given on Chieftalk Lew
  15. Rob: for each image in the layout you can open it and click on "save in plan" this could/should be done during the creation of the layout I have been requesting - nay - demanding that CA give us a default option that this save happen auto-matically My partner and I have been bit by this PITA foible since 2005 I just don't understand why CA has failed to fix this issue long - long - ago ;( Lew
  16. Ken: this is one reason why I preferred the hardware lock over the software lock each license could be operated independently of the other furthermore, there is no way for CA or some future owner to turn off the license for an older version I can still run all of my older licenses anytime I choose X9 was the last version to have a hardware lock and that is the last version I will be using I do have X10 and X11 but have no plans to use them Lew
  17. Bob: I think it can - but will it on all PC's etc also depends on the skill level of the user Lew
  18. Chopsaw: I did zoom in - quite a bit - but maybe not enough ??? anyways I gave up and deleted the dims on page 1 as I didn't need them anymore I'll check out using the margins settings I'll make a suggestion that this roadblock be removed as it is a PITA and is totally unnecessary Lew
  19. sorry, but no new dongle ver 10 is 12 versions ago ... also don't forget to install the ver 10.08a or .08b update your best bet is to buy an older PC to run Chief on or buy a newer version of Chief - maybe HD PRO that runs on Win 10 if you check Ebay you can find older versions of Chief - I would recommend X4 or later be sure to verify with CA that it is a valid license before buying if the seller is honest they will cooperate Lew
  20. I was using layout to create one image from 3 images the layout was 24" wide by 8" high - I had the three images on page 1 I had placed some dims to divide the 24" into three panes of 8" each I decided I needed the layout to be 24" x 12" so I changed the drawing sheet as needed this changed my 1/4" boundary I had placed on page 0 this keeps the prints away from the paper edge that might get cut off at OfficeMax I usually click on the boundary and a temp dim appears so I can set it to 1/4" nope, not happening I try various things - but no joy - no temp dims at the boundary lines edges back to page 1 I delete all the lines defining the panes and now I can get my temp dims on page 0 Is there a way to use temp dims once some dims have been placed ? if not, I will make a suggestion to remove this roadblock the attached layout is done in X9 Lew OAKWOOD_NOTABLES_190724_1215_LBX9.layout
  21. Rene: ok, I will try to learn how to convert .JPG to .PNG with transparent background thanks Lew
  22. I have tried to get these 3 images to be as large as possible but even with setting "front" and "back" if I make them any larger the bounding box starts to overlap the actual image is there any way to hide the bounding box completely ? done in X9 Lew OAKWOOD_NOTABLES_24X12_190724_1300_LBX9.layout
  23. Bob: You should file a DBA (doing business as) with your county for your business name the county requires this - it is mandatory if you visit client sites you should talk to you insurance agent and get a general liablity insur. plan this protects the homeowner if you trip and fall thru a window or off a deck etc if you are signing and submitting permit plans then you need E&O insurance if you only draw "pretty pictures" for a builder or other clients and they submit the permit then E&O is not as important and could even be a liability the more education and certificates you have and put on your business card and website etc the more liabilty you take on - your contract should state what you do and what you are responsible for create a disclaimer stating this and have the client sign it liability can be transferred to a higher authority like a builder or an architect or engineer it can never be transferred to a lower authority like a home owner some home owner clients like to act as their own GC make sure your contract has disclaimer stating that they have the responsibility of having the plans reviewed and approved by an architect or engineer file the paperwork to become an LLC this can be done via the internet and doesn't cost much this protects your house and personal property from lawsuits as long as there is not fraud or gross negligence on your part concerning the client it is possible to "pierce the veil" above all "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Lew
  24. Hi: HD PRO users can get a lot of benefit from following the Chieftalk forum since PRO has many of the manual tools that Chief Premier has just be aware of the limitations of PRO and that not all advice given here will work for you also always specify that you are using PRO as many of the Chief Premier users are not aware of PRO's features and limitations Lew
  25. after a couple of cases I went to a full retainer system just like lawyers use deposit X with me and I work until X is depleted or nearly depleted then they deposit another round this allows me to share everything with them at anytime since they are always current even then I had to "fire" a couple of them and return their balance there are ALWAYS "those" people out there as for the times in the beginning I would send a "demand" letter what I called a "cannon shoi across the bow" pay what you owe or else - and I would list the else the fact that he gave you a check proves he owed you the money go to small claims and you will probably prevail someone on this forum stated a few times they would call the permit office and notify them that you had a legal claim on the plans and the office would refuse to issue the permit at one point I let our primary client owe me over $12 K then he disappeared from me and his partners I was able to get all of that paid over time except for $1700 Lew
