  1. you can download the free X8 client viewer to bring the old .pl1 files as .plan files Lew
  2. the software lock system didn't start until X2 so without a hardware lock I think X1 is useless best to check with CA sales to be sure if you buy a used copy skip getting X3 the library system was horrible and needs a subscription it was replaced with X4 and is still the same library system for X11 X4 also introduced anno-sets CA also offers a rent-to-own plan Lew
  3. use windows control panel and uninstall that should delete everything in file explorer select C: and do a search for chief and see if there are any leftover folders that need to be deleted manually Lew
  4. CA stopped providing hardware locks with the release of X10 Lew
  5. just draw the light, select, convert to symbol-electric, optons:light, switched. Done, it will now connect Mark: good idea how does it appear in the schedule then ? I assume it can be edited to state LV ? Lew
  6. as a workaround add a standard light and make it tiny then connect the switch to that light ? probably best to connect before making it tiny Lew
  7. Chopsaw: perhaps Chief's profile.layout has macros and templates set on other pages I know not ... I simply wanted a basic layout with a red border on page 0 I was a my museum and didn't have my older templates with me so I used Chief's OOB profile.layout and deleted everything on page 0 apparently that was not enough at home I was able to use one of my older layout templates and had the 36 x 12 layout created in moments Lew
  8. ok, I started over and had success I was at my museum and didn't have any of my older blank layouts with me so I used the profile.layout and then deleted "everything" visible there must have been other settings that set up templates on other pages ??? anyways this morning I used my 11 x 17 blank and resized for 24 x 36 and resized the red border after placing one of the art pieces I realized I needed 36 x 12 with space between each art piece I could go for 24 x 12 but then there would be zero space between each art piece as they are 11" w and 6" h I might be able to find a 30 x 12 frame at Hobby Lobby at that will reduce the space between each art piece for now this is what they will look like - see attached Lew FORT_NIAGARA_MATS_A_36x12_X9.pdf
  9. Glenn, Scott: thanks for the replies I'm used to old fashioned layouts where you put things on page 0 that you want to see on all pages I have no idea how or why other pages are set as templates also ??? when I get to the museum I will start over and create a new 36 x 24 layout with the red border on page 0 in my initial floundering in remembering how to rotate a layout (you don't - you select portrait) I must have done something ELSE ??? I just want a simple 36 x 24 layout so I can add 4 images of Fort Niagara to be printed as one art piece to be framed and hung in my museum thanks Lew
  10. I don't understand how to have pages as templates I understand how to have a layout as a template I never did anything on pages 27-28 ??? I don't want the red border on pages 1 and 2 it is suppose to be on page 0 then it will show on all pages Lew
  11. Shane: thanks, but I'm using X9 and can't open it Lew
  12. Ok, when you don't use something for awhile the fundamentals slip away I am trying to create a template for a 36 x 24 layout (portrait mode) On page 0 I have a red border 1/2" inset which I want to see on all the pages as a guide for placing my art which I then print as one piece for framing in my musuem I can't get the red border to show on all the pages what have I forgotten to do ? I'm using X9 Lew FORT_NIAGARA_MAT_36X24.layout
  13. sorry, HD PRO doesn't and can't do raytracing there may be a way to create an export file to send to a raytracing program but I doubt it you could post in the "seeking services" section and someone who has Chief Premier could do them for you - for a fee be sure to state which version of HD PRO you have you may also want to post on the Hometalk forum as they can better advise on the HD products while HD PRO users can benefit from following ChiefTalk most Chief Premier users are not familiar with the HD products and their limitations Lew
  14. I set my roof plane lines to white that makes the roof planes more distinquished Lew
  15. I think there are Hasp to USB adapter Lew
  16. usage questions should be posted in the Q&A section of the forum Lew
  17. Mike: just curious - are you in NF NY or NF Ontario ? I live in Lockport NY and have a history museum in NF NY I'm retired - but still use Chief for my historical projects - buildings that my family built in the 1800's including Terrapin Tower and the Buttery Elevators at the Niagara Whirlpool and the Buttery Sawmill before that Lew
  18. But you can define a room as an Attic room on any other level. Glenn: thanks for the clarification its been awhile since I've dealt with floor A I have always believed that floor A should work like any other floor leave it to CA to keep those "old days" limitations and allow other floors to be labeled as attic they do love confusion Lew
  19. there are two schools for approach 1. combine foundation and basement on floor 0 this has been the "traditional" method from CA since the beginning 2. others dedicate floor 0 to the foundation and floor1 to the basement and floor 2 to the main level either approach is appropriate I'm guessing - as this is NOT my forte - by maybe the garage should be on floor 0 so it connects to the foundation on floor 0, while the basement on floor 1 also connects to the foundation then floor 2 sits on the basement ? place terrain on floor 1 then adjust as needed ? Lew
  20. I add _ to the layer names that I create that places them at the top of the list when sorting by name Lew
  21. In 2011 I donated the brand new unused 110 to the local history dept in Niagara Falls as a thank you for all the scanning I did on their scanner of my family history covering 18 sites and events during the 1800's Lew
  22. Hi: I would recommend skipping on the plotter and just use a local print shop I bought an HP Designjet 100 Plus for $900+ in 2007 and ended up never even plugging it in it was easier to use a local shop and I decided it was better to send the PDF to the builder and let them do the prints after one builder rushed the clearly marked DRAFT version to the printer I added a clause to the contract stating "by printing the client agrees that they have reviewed the documents and found them acceptable" Lew
  23. make sure the PRO and Chief versions are compatable be sure to set the edit flag in Chief so PRO can do edits if needed create simple plan and do a trial run about passing plan back and forth Lew
