I started using a 38" tv in 2008 It works very nicely for doing chief work day to day and for client presentations I was using a VGA connection as my laptop didn't have HDMI but HDMI would even be better for my living room I using an HDMI wireless connection to my 60" tv when I want to sit back and relax while using the computer Lew

Best way to rotate entire plan for off-angle ADU?
lbuttery replied to Christina_Girerd's topic in General Q & A
I would create the ADU in a separate plan then make a 3D symbol of the house and add to library then place the symbol in the original plan and rotate as needed Lew -
Properly converting simple basic plans from Chief 6x to CA 12x
lbuttery replied to amelto12's topic in General Q & A
are you referring to Chief 6 or Chief X6 ? Lew -
David: I retired at the time X4 was released with anno-sets so I have never used them my understanding is you can go simple (maybe 6-12) with them or heavy-duty (maybe 30-40) I would suggest going simple at first by using the anno-sets provided by Chief OOB then add sets only as needed rather than go big right away and get "confused" by it all you will probably need to consider using plan sets while you are on the learning curve Lew
-
Chris: dragging walls up or down is not recommended and should only be done if necessary and when you have the skill to do so otherwise, the plan can become "messy" there are many other methods for enclosing a fridge Lew

Buying HD Pro 2021 & finishing plans with CA Premier X12
lbuttery replied to frjram1359's topic in Sales Related Questions
but not all printer can do a scaled print The recommendation I go by is to state on the prints that they are not to be scaled that all dims should be used as stated the reasoning being it is too easy for someone to make a mistake and then get things "wrong" then where does blame lie ? Lew -
Buying HD Pro 2021 & finishing plans with CA Premier X12
lbuttery replied to frjram1359's topic in Sales Related Questions
while HD PRO can edit Premier plans - if both are from the same release there is s caveat PRO can only read/display features that PRO doesn't have If the Premier plan contains features that only Premier has then NO edits allowed in PRO for that feature another option is to buy X12 Premier - complete the project ASAP then offer X12 for sale with a $500 or so discount off the full price If you buy an older version of Premier get at least X4 as the Library system in X3 was horrible and X4 introduced the current library system along with Anno-sets and many other features Lew -
"Old" Chief user needs advice on upgrade
lbuttery replied to ChiefUserGingerP's topic in General Q & A
new keys for old versions are not available from CA they can be available via donation from other users I have donated a few after verifying with CA that they have a valid license I charge $5 to cover the cost of mailing It is a violation of the license to sell older versions that have been upgraded Lew -
"Old" Chief user needs advice on upgrade
lbuttery replied to ChiefUserGingerP's topic in General Q & A
Win10 has a comparability mode feature for running older software If you should chose to start using Chief X11 you can still access your old plans Chief 8 was the last version capable of opening the older format but the free Chief Viewer ver 8 is available for download and it can open the files then save them as the newer format .PLAN files verify this with CA's customer service before activating the X11 license there will be a $50 fee to transfer the license to your name If your friend has passed - not sure what they will require to do the transfer Chief has added a lot of new features since ver 10 so there would be a learning curve but you don't have to learn how to use them unless you need them Lew -
Anyone Using Digital Submissions In Your City?
lbuttery replied to HumbleChief's topic in General Q & A
I was saying almost 15 years ago that eventually all submissions would be digital As a former Realtor I also see a day when a house buyer can get a digital plan just like they can get a survey now that way if the buyer wants to do renovations in the future they have the plan to start with Lew -
also check out Dan Baumann at www.Chiefexperts.com Lew

Just my opinion but that veranda with those super tall colums looks totally out of place - I would even say "silly" just my opinion Lew
-
Lew that does not sound like your average root cellar. Are you sure you should be talking about it ? Did you forget the NDA you signed ? Chopsaw: I haven't done beta testing in over a decade I did the 30 floors underground test more than a decade ago Lew
-
it is possible to have all 30 floors underground I am not a terrain expert but I did it many years ago I can't remember how but it involves using negative floor heights and negative ceiling heights I'm sure the experts will chime in soon Lew
-
users of HD PRO can benefit from following Chieftalk as they have many of the manual tools that Premier uses but understand the limits of PRO as not everything will apply to you also be sure to state you are using PRO if you ask questions so any replies will take the limits into consideration Lew

maybe in the archives ? probably best to contact tech support on Monday don't delete anything else or move files around etc not sure about Mac but on PC files are simply marked for deletion by setting first byte of file to 0 then when new space is needed that space is reused so file recovery utilities may be able to recover ? Lew

Rich: I have never heard of such a utility ? Lew
-
yes, Chief already does that if the layer is not showing in the lower right then check your preferences and defaults Lew

Just wait until the quarantine baby boom 9 months from now as someone posted on Facebook 13 years from now they will be known as the Quaran-teens Lew

Hi: consider buying this book - used copy is around $60+ https://www.amazon.com/Stickleys-Craftsman-Homes-Stubblebine-2006-09-11/dp/B01MRIGW5X/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=ray+stubblebine+-+craftsman&qid=1586997867&sr=8-2 it has all 200+ Stickley Craftsman plans that were published in Stickley's Magazine in the early 1900's hence the plans are in the public domain I had thought it might make a good set of plans to "modernize" with wider hallways and bigger baths and closets etc but maintain the style of each plan as it was I retired instead Lew
-
Nipped that thing right at the bud! Michael: Nah, the plans were very good, he should have paid $2,000 for them I used that set of plans to wrangle work from 2 other builders as soon as they saw them We were willing to do them for free since I was brand-new to Chief and Architecture and building etc our confidence level was "low" - but we finished those plans in a few weeks I wish I had said "no fee if you can't use them, $2,000 if you go to permit" that way they value your work from day 1 Lew
-
Chad: I agree, since he is a friend in my case it was a builder who promised more work we did a few more jobs with him - but he should have paid for the first one as it turned out very successful Lew
-
I would recommend against doing anything for free I did my first job for free instead I should have stated in a contract that if it is taken to permit then they owe $X if the work is good enough to get a permit and build then it is good enough for payment Lew

School Project - Nationwide Architect Approval Stamp Service
lbuttery replied to johnmmm's topic in General Q & A
the laws vary by state - so a nationwide system is not feasible in some states it is illegal to stamp any plans not done by the architect etc or under their direct supervision In other states stamping is not necessary if within presecribed limits and the plans may be submitted by a licensed builder or the homeowner In some the plans may be be stamped if every page is reviewed by the architect etc and the plans are kept on file bottom line - it all depends on the state and what they local permit office requires Lew -
Chief has the "Cad to Walls" tool but it is rarely mentioned here and my success was - no joy I haven't heard of anyone having good success with it the Autocad walls have to be "just so" - or .... the recommendation is to scale the .DWG or .DXF file on a separate layer and then start placing walls, windows, doors etc as a overlay then turn off or delete that layer when no longer needed Lew
