  1. 5 second search finds this on chiefs own website.  https://www.chiefarchitect.com/products/sysreq.html

As you probably know CPU is important for ray tracing but GPU is arguably more important in almost all other aspects of Chief and of course proper memory so it doesn’t get bottlenecked and limited is essential.  Good luck in your new search.

    btw here is a suggestion:

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/appleinsider.com/articles/19/12/13/no-apples-new-mac-pro-isnt-overpriced/amp/

    :D

  2. Many times the objects in the plan are to blame for slowing things down.  If you inputted lots of 3d symbols especially from 3rd party like the warehouse or others it affects. Pdf and png or jpegs also affect it.  And last but not least labels on slows it way down.

As a side note.  What “Signatures” above is talking about is very important even if it doesn’t seem to be to you.  Really without having a plan file, screen shot, knowing what software and hardware you are using many are unable to help you and will pass by your request.  They have limited time so will help others who do put everything in their post instead of asking you for them.

    I hope something here helps.

I can't seem to figure out how to get the wall outline to show up in my Wall Elevation views. This worked fine in x10, but hasn't worked in X11. Any thoughts?

    Wall Lines not showing.jpg

Probably best if you upload the plan file.  I don’t have this issue.  Also can you please update your signature with not just the software but also hardware info.  Many times the answer is dependent on what version and is sometimes tied to a hardware issue such as drivers out of date for you GPU as just example.

For anyone finding this thread and looking for training.

May want to check out Dan Baumann's program at https://www.chiefexpertsacademy.com/ he's an incredibly kind and warm person who has coached in this software for a couple of decades and is reasonably priced. I haven't taken the program but was invited to hang out with his family and constituents and can't say enough great things about him.

May also want to check out @DMDesigns website for training and @SNestor's or @dshall's YouTube channel.

@Alaskan_Son offers training in Macro creation, time available, @Joe_Carrick may offer training as well, not sure.

May want to sit in on @MarkMc's cabinet hacking webinar next week.

Lastly, I would say to direct questions @solver for roof related questions(or any questions) as he is the best and most available at auto generating complicated roofs in my opinion.

Adding @joey_martin and @jbaehmer to the mix as well as they are some of the fastest drafters I know or heard tales of. Not sure how they do it but it's fun to pick through their plans when they post.(plan stalker)

You can click on any of these tags that I've so annoyingly placed for these users and follow them.(sorry fellas, get back to work!,ha)

    Cheers!

I just wanted to add in there as he is too humble to do it himself: @Renerabbitt for anything to do with renderings or textures and mapping (along with others he obviously already mentioned...)

As always a great Thank you to all of these guys! :D

  5. Yes as Builder said for sake of time sometimes that is the best route to delete the errant lines with the layout tool.  Just note that it should be done right before printing as anytime the view is updated they will come back.

Without seeing the plan it really looks like dimension line leaders.  You might take a look at the settings for those two dimension strings and maybe try where you are grabbing the dimension from to the bottom instead of the top of the roof dimension.  My guess is you did the dimensions at the top of the roof then manually moved that dimension line to the bottom of the dormer roof?

Also, when I look at the roof framing view, the beams I have placed show up. When I open each beam the top height matches the height of the adjacent walls.  When I generate a roof it doesn't cover the beam area though. If I select the roof and try to drag it over the beam area, the plane of the roof continues as it was drawn and it just goes under the beams.  I assumed since the beams show up in the roof framing view, and are placed at the right height, that a generated roof should cover it?  What am I missing?

Roofs are designed to cover rooms.  If you are manually building a patio or deck area with posts and framing features (like with a timber-framed porch cover) you still need to designate the room for it to auto-build things.  Many ways to do this but I use either railings that are invisible if I don't need the railing or room dividers (wall type) to delineate the room.  Make sure the room has the flat ceiling turned off and in some cases you will need to delete the ceiling structure (even if you have it turned off.) and auto roof should work for that area.

The program wants them there. I'd put them on a new layer and turn that layer off.

You can draw in your own connecting walls too. Don't need the Chief ones, but should have a connection.

As Eric mentioned best to leave them in but hide them by changing layer or color to background color.

Room labels/attributes will not work correctly and you will have some other "weird" little quirks happen if you delete them.  I wish chief would automatically put them in on a separate layer or on the hidden walls layer.

    Removed. Found Answer.

Glad you found your answer.  BTW when you go to your post there is three buttons "Quote" "Edit" & "Optiopns", at the bottom and the one that says Options has the option to delete the thread so it keeps the forum nice and clean.

    Have Fun!

    EXCELLENT!!!!

I was thinking I need to add the countertop to the top of the wall. The countertop is created at the correct position and then I must add the support underneath. I can create the support, first, but I don't connect the two, Chief does.

Is there a video on attaching a custom countertop to a half wall? the link you provide shows adding custom countertop to cabinets.

Now, I'm having trouble adjusting 1 inch over hang on the front and 6 inch on the back

The wall and cabinet have nothing to do with the countertop really.  You can place a floating countertop.  In this case Erick just helped you to know where to place it in height so it wasn’t being conflicted with the wall.

Go to chiefarchitect.com. Search custom countertop.

You don't "attach" a countertop to a half wall. You just place it in position.

He was referencing the link to that I sent above.

been all through the KB saw creating island, custom countertops, etc. but I can't get my custom countertop on top of the half wall. It is either in front of or behind the half wall...........

Did you look at the article?  It is pretty easy.  Just draw it and set your heights, sizes etc.  you don’t use the create countertop from cabinet button you use the custom countertop tool.

  11. I use iCloud mainly as it syncs so well and is very robust.  I do have a dropbox (I think they call it ultra) upgraded account as well as a google drive but those are shared drives with some clients.  On top of the iCloud that I use I use a Drobo NAS with some quality HDD drives in the office which gets an hourly Time machine backup.  I also time to time do a full backup of my user library to both the cloud as well as the NAS.

  12. Ok, let me see if I can understand what you are trying to do.

First off yes always go clockwise, I try to do that in all aspects of drawing it from top to right down left.  It is a good habit and then your walls are always on the correct side you want as well as your electrical connections go the way you want them to arc.

    image.thumb.png.caf7cc0c10a0def16be28bb18197aec6.png

Maybe this will help?  When making that first bay of what I think the garage is supposed to be (it showed 11' for the right side) click the side wall that you want to move to make the 12' length then click the dimension line as shown and type.  That wall will move over.  Same as the left side.  Works the same in polylines as well.

Does that help answer what you are looking for?

BTW Thank you very much for filling in your signature line.  It surely does help as you will see!  I am sure some of the guys who are much more skilled at this will chime in with some pointers as well.  But have fun!  It is addicting! :D

Tried trial version for a week and just purchased full version this morning.

Having trouble dimensioning exterior walls.  I'm trying to go in the clockwise direction suggested on some of the video's.  Is there a way to "lock" a dimension once you have changed it? When changing some dimensions the option to choose which direction the change affects.  I had a back and one side completely done.  The total front and rear width dimensions were the same.  As I started to change individual measurements on the front of the plan, it started changing the measurements at the back that had already been set to their proper values.  I have searched and haven't found it there is a way to lock things.  I'm unsure why at times there is a choice how you want the change to move, and others, there isn't.  I'm guessing the answer is rather simple. I would appreciate any help.

    Welcome to the Chief Family!

In this case it might be best to post your plan to see what you are referencing.  Just make sure that before you upload it you close it out of chief or it will stay locked and not upload to the site.  Of course it is superbowl sunday so you may or may not get a quick response on this one... ;)

BTW from the Everett area, where are you located?

Thank you so much for posting this! I love my Mac mini and often brag how well it runs CA but not PBR. I had no idea this tech existed. Takes some hacking for my non-TB3 older mini but after doing some research I think this option will save me from having to either buy a more powerful Mac or switch to PC platform.

    Thanks again.

I almost went this route but decided since I didn’t have a very fast processor and everyone was selling their 6.1 units for good deals on eBay so they can buy the new Mac Pro  I would take advantage and got a 1 year old Mac Pro 6.1.

With the other software I use/have used, it is a common part of the workflow to check dimensions of objects in 3D for accuracy. For example, distance of window head trim to the ceiling, etc.

Often while showing the 3D model to clients during a design presentation they will ask, "How wide/tall is that?" or "How much room do I have for...?"  or "How far from the ceiling is....?"

You can get exact measurements in an elevation view or if you select and open the item (I.e. a window) and open it (dbl click or ctrl./cmd. E) the dbx will give you the information in regards to elevations such as from floor to lower and to top.  So if you have a window it will tell you the bottom is 32” from floor and the top is 80” from floor so you would know it is 16” from clg...  very basic example but maybe something that will help.  I know that I use the measure in obj files from matterport scans sometimes and it is never exact but rather a close proximity as 3d measuring is all based on angle of view and of item you are measuring.

It probably doesn’t help with what you are looking for but maybe something.
