A garage room is unique...more things can be specified.  A deck, porch and balcony room type have some unique controls also.

A general room type - like “Living Room” does not control floor or ceiling elevation.

Yes and you are probably right that it didn’t affect this but the plan I saw today he had not specified any of the rooms so it grabbed the garage elevation for its floor height and so his p solid was 18” from the floor.  Once I set the room type and put in a new p solid it was correct.  Just thought it could maybe have affected your issue too.  Could be.  I generally don’t worry about any of the attic walls until my plan is way more advanced and room definitions is something I have noticed usually makes  differences in little things.

Anyways was just a thought that maybe Robert wasn’t that far off on this.

  2. Interesting.  Didn't open your test plan but just helped someone else with an elevation issue for a polyline solid he put in the plan.  He hadn't specified the different rooms and even though each room had the ceiling and floor heights set properly it automatically went with the lowest possible setting to figure the floor height (in this case his specified garage floor which is set in his preferences to be 18" below the other floor.  So it put the polyline solid in the wrong spot when he tried to specify it from the floor height.

I am thinking that in your case what Robert is saying may have some validity, chief doesn't like the unknown and thus is playing wonky until it is set correct.  Hope you like my super technical terminology.  Anyways just a thought...

  3. In case you are on a mac (Don't see what you use in your signature line (BTW this info is very helpful to others trying to answer your questions.) If not maybe this will help others searching for something similar.

Other option for compiling if you are on a mac is natively inside preview, just open up the files you need to compile and use the preview thumbnail on the left side and just drag from one document to the next (you can multiple select all pages in the thumbnails and drag them all into the document you want as your end document.  You can also re-order your documents.  There are of course other programs you can use for pc or even mac but this one is very easy imho.

Use foundation method, make your walls invisible and set room height to the length of your pilings. You can trim down your wall type ( no footing ect...) then your floor frames normal and of course all your Pilings will be manual work.

There are lots of ways to accomplish this style of construction.  Erick was kind enough to do a search for you (usually easier and faster than asking on the forum,) and those are great ways of doing it.  I have done a few in South and Central America which this can be a similar style of construction.

    My preferred method is

-Foundation for the footing on level 0

-Posts & Beams on Level 1

-Subfloor and 2nd story on Level 2

    Best of luck! :)

    Ryan,

I actually purchased my new MacBook Pro last night and I am excited to get it. It is funny you mention the Totu Hub, because I actually purchased the Totu dock from Amazon, which allows me to do three monitors. I am going to try and use an apple tv for when my clients are in the office to show them their house on the TV. I will experiment to see how it works.

This is the dock that I bought. https://www.amazon.com/TOTU-Upgraded-Universal-Charging-Thunderbolt/dp/B0838WTFD1/ref=sr_1_3?crid=TLVA72PC76QS&dchild=1&keywords=totu+docking+station&qid=1586892787&s=electronics&sprefix=totu+%2Celectronics%2C158&sr=1-3

    Chris

Congrats!  You will love it for sure!

BTW are you a licensed PE only in PA or in other states as well?  I have done a couple of projects out there in the past so a local PE that is a chief user could be very helpful! :)

I cant seem to figure out what this "line" is that is attaching from the wall end through the cabinet. That 'square' section of walls is full length and then it switches to half wall for a peninsula. Sometimes it lets me work with it just fine and then whenever I try to make that base cabinet bigger than 45" wide and line it up against the corner, that faint angled line from the wall end to the cabinet corner (under BCB42R) appears.

This is the type of item it would be best to include your plan file with the post.

BTW Welcome to the forum.  It is very helpful to the excellent chief pros if you have your signature line filled out with your software as well as some hardware specs.  See mine below as well as this link to fill it out.

I see from the pic you are using x10, many times the version change makes the difference with what the solution is.

    PROBLEM

I have 2018 Mac mini with 16GB RAM  — Intel UHD Graphic 630 — Two 1080 27" Dell monitors.  I just purchased Home Designer 2021 Architecture.

With such weak graphics card, it is not uncommon for the Spinning Wheel to appear when working in 3D.   After some research from several Graphic Card websites, there are several solutions I am considering:

    1.  Purchase an iMac with 16GB Ram — Radeon Pro 560x w/ 4GB GDDR5 memory = $1800

    2.  BlackMagic eGPU:  Radeon Pro 580 = $700

    3.  BlackMagic eGPU Pro:  Radeon RX Vega 56 = $1200

    CONCLUSION

Option 1:  Most expensive, and not practical since my Mac mini handles everything else very well. And performance is subpar to Options 2 and 3.

Option 2:  Performance Improvement is over 500% better compared my current internal GPU.

Option 3:  Improvement is over 1000% better.

    QUESTIONS

    1. Would an eGPU be beneficial in solving my 3D rendering issues?

    2. Would the BlackMagic eGPU be sufficient improvement vs the BlackMagic Pro?

    Thank you for any feedback.

HDPro is a lighter weight program for 3d than chief so you may get better inforation on the hometalk forum (for hdpro).

But here is my experience previously using a mbpro 13" with the same graphic chip as your mini.  I had the Black Magic e-GPU Breakaway Puck with a Radeon Pro 560 w/ 4gb ram for around $500 (now they are down to $300 if you buy it direct from sonnet).  It was not a high end gpu by any means but it worked quite well.  I used that as my work machine for about 9 months before I upgraded my desktop to a Mac Pro 6.1 (old garbage can model of the pro.) which has dual gpus and works amazingly!  I continued to use my mbpro 13 for travel as i tend to travel alot and still work while doing so.  I would bring my BM e-gpu with and although the unit itself was small the power brick was HUGE on it and in my opinion it should not be considered for travel.  But it did the job and recently while in Mexico there was a power issue where it sparked and stopped working 100%.  Sonnet replaced the bad unit with a new one after nearly a year of heavy use.  In the meantime my 13" mbpro started having the screen issue that they are known to have and I ended up upgrading to the new 2019 16" MBPro with the 5300m with 4gb memory which flies as well.  I ended up selling that Black Magic puck e-gpu on ebay for $300 and an insurance claim resulted in a full refund for the mbpro 13 due to the coronavirus issue shutting down their tech facility.  So overall I actually came out ahead on the deal financially with getting 2.5 years of work out of the computer... :)

My two cents:  Go with the Sonnet Black Magic Puck for your mac mini, or step up to the 16" MBPro and resell your Mini.  But really the mini with an e-gpu should run HDPro just fine.

Hope this long diatribe helps in your decision making.

  8. For what it is worth, when I use my laptop at home (which is rare) I use a usb 3 mini dock which has some usb ports, ethernet port, as well as an hdmi.  I use that hdmi to connect to my big monitor and between the big monitor and the 16" laptop display that is what I use.  When I travel I use the adapter and sometimes bring my 25" LG ultra-wide monitor with and connect via the hdmi port with no issues whatsoever.  While working at home, if I were to need my other monitor or two more then I would just look into a splitter that could work with the other two and attach it to that.  It can input power through a usb-c as well.  This is the one I use with no delay issues but again only with one external monitor for what it is worth.  My wife uses the same one on a 13" with multiple peripherals such as pro webcam, wacom tablet, ethernet, external monitor, and probably some other items.   She is an online teacher so just brings her laptop connects the dongle and everything is setup including power at her desk.

This is the one I use:

Looks like the same brand has one that has a HDMI, VGA, and DP port in it...

From what I understand there are many Engineers who are licensed in different states (even one I have heard about and that some on this forum use who is licensed in all 50 states,) but a much smaller portion of licensed architects in multiple states.  I do work with an architect in Michigan who is also licensed in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana (Still hand draws too...) so there are some out there.

Wow. @rgardner I would love to speak to an architect who is licensed in all 50 states. That’s very interesting. I never knew that existed.

Engineer in all 50 states (someone on this board uses him.) https://john-raby-associates-post-building.business.site/.  To clarify I have never used him and only took note of his info in case it comes in handy for a random job.    This architect I work with in Michigan is the first I have heard of with so many states but those 4 states are all close to where he has an office.

I don't have an answer to this but what happens in a situation where a federally run infrastructure project crosses over state boundaries or a project being conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spans more than one state. I find it hard to believe that they would have to find a licensed engineer in each State to approve the portion of the project that crosses over each boarder.

Where are these in the libraries?  I have been looking and striking out.

Everybody wants a 75 inch TV on the wall or standing on a wide console, so how is it best done and where are the images of golfing, basketball games, football games, shark week, whatever?

I have done it before building a solid with surround frame, snipping images from the web for the screen, but doesn't Chief have these in some library somewhere?

Most of the TVs and monitors are set so you can change the material for the screen to put in whatever image you want.

I am trying to build a roof .. here are my issues

    1. the auto build is out of wack completely as you can see in the image

    2. the partially built manual roof has 2 gable roofs- one on the left side of the house - one on the other side -But even though they are both 8 pitch they are of different heights (image)

    3. the full over view shows the ceilings..(image)

My issue is how do I build a roof over the angled front of the house .  I have read the tutorials - watched the videos-I would like to have 3 gables (a) left   - (b) middle (angled wall) and (c) right over the garage..

The house has main level 9' and 2nd level 9' with open below for great room - foundation is also full 9'

I have been working on this for a few days but haven't been able to complete it properly- is it because of the shape of the house??

    ..welcome any suggestions

    some gables.jpg

Don’t have your plan file so merely a guess but one issue is probably that the left side appears to be set at a 9 or10:12 pitch and the right at 6 or 7:12 pitch???  Still possible but would take some time.

It sounds like you have Home Designer Pro ( 2019) vs Chief Architect Premier ( or Interiors ) so it maybe better to ask on the HomeTalk Forum instead of the Chief Talk

    https://hometalk.chiefarchitect.com/forum/5-qa/

Many aspects ( basics of CA ) are the same in Pro to Premier but nobody here would be able to give specific advice as the won't be using that version  ( assuming I am correct about HD Pro.

Eric ( Username Solver here) is one person I know who is familiar with both , maybe he can help.

    @solver

    Mick.

@solver or @DavidJPotter are both very good with HD pro

  14. Just wanted to mention that Apple for the first time just listed a bunch of different models of the 16 as cert refurbished including a fully loaded with 64gb ram and the 5500m with 8gb GPU.  Get standard warranty as well.

I had an emergency when my old 13” screen died (used an e-GPU) while on a trip with four  deadlines I had to finish.  I was very fortunate because of a previously purchased warranty as I bought it from my previous employer when I started in my own, (Assurant covered the unit 100% with money back.) Since I use my pro 6.1 95% of the time at home and just use the laptop for traveling (something I do less now since covid-19) and had to buy a machine locally.  I was fortunate enough that BB had them on sale for $300 off but had to go with the base model which is still very capable for a laptop.  Even came with a 5500m with 4gb and 16gb ram.  Chief works very well on it too!

    Good day all,

I am currently looking at buying a new computer and I am very heavily leaning on purchasing a MacBook Pro 16", which will give me everything to run Chief Architect. I have a MacBook that I bought in 2009 and it is still running strong, but it is not upgradable to the new Mac OS and I can't run X12. Right now I am running a Windows10 desktop, but really want one computer for work and other things. On my current setup I am running dual monitors with a TV attached for when I meet with customers.

I am looking for a dock for the MacBook Pro, which will allow me to connect up to four (4) monitors. This is so I can attach the two monitors I have along with the TV. In the near future I would like to add a third monitor for doing my structural calculations and such while in Chief. I have found this one linked below, but was wondering if anyone else is using a similar setup or if this will cause problems with Chief?

    Targus Quad Docking Station

    Thank you in advance,

    Chris

Haven’t tried the dock but recently upgraded to the 16 as my travel computer and it works great!

@rgardner  Thank you for the help! I dont believe they are penetrating the roof structure.  How do i efficiently check to this?  Cross section?  There is a roof structure although its pretty wonky currently.  I am not the best at designing roof lines.

Yes do a cross section to see if the top of them are penetrating the ceiling plane.

I have done this process at least 8 times and it never will come up on the plan.  I must have something else checked Wrong.  Also do you know why when I put a room label on a room it will always put the word behind it BEDROOM.  Like Living Room Bedroom.  Kitchen Bedroom.  I don't know what I have done to make all of them do that.  I have erased them and put back in but continues to add the word BEDROOM on each room. Any more ideas?

I agree with what everyone else is saying.  This one would be a little more difficult to search since you don’t know the reason it is doing it.

hint...  look in your preferences under rooms and labels...

  18. Welcome to the forum.  You will get more bites for this if you post it in the seeking services forum.  Looks like an easy enough but large building.  I am sure you will have some takers.  Please if you move your post or repost delete this old one to help the moderators.

I guess I missed that way back there somewhere ?

Sounds like you have a solution though, and you can even make a Icon for it and not use Chief's Door Dropdown for Shower Doors

My guess would be that by saving it to the Library the Door "loses" some of it Parametric behaviors  ( it's "smarts" ) which in this Case is a good thing ...

    M.

Yeah that is what I was thinking too.

thanks for all your time trying to help.  Glad to know it wasn’t something I have been doing wrong.
