In most cases homes do not have outswing doors for several reasons.

    • Security
    • Weather protection
    • Convenience
    • .......

Other occupancy groups generally have more than 10 occupants and are required to have out-swinging egress doors.  It is those doors that the code is referring to and their location can be critical.  Distance of travel in a hospital, hotel, condominium, apartment building, or many other commercial buildings may require multiple egress doors.

Agree but thought it was worth mentioning what was explained to me years ago by a door manuf rep.  He explained since most weather issues refer to wind driven rain the exterior door swing is actually more secure against this type of weather as the door gasket actually gets more compressed and thus more weather tight when being pushed by the wind.

It works in Plan and Elevation the same way....... and works nicely with WMRs , though can be a bit laborious for highly detailed work as you need a unique material for each wall or area you need different offsets. ( Copy the material in the select material DBX and rename)

Very true, I often overlook the settings in the fill area as usually I am not using them for anything that needs to be that specific for hatch.  If I am doing a layout for materials It is usually a wall elevation and just use the AMD button to adjust a backsplash or shower detail.

Of course I have a specialty estimating program that I work with for estimating flooring and tile work in particular as that is a portion of what my business does.  So I generally if am doing specifics like that am also doing the take-off and use its layout details as I am already having to set that point and get the BOQ for the shower so can do their 3d rendering or wall elevations details.  Not as nice as Chief's but still works quite well as I can layout the tile exactly as wanted and how the installer will need to install it.

That is what I was thinking too but I am thinking maybe he meant in plan view as he is referring to hatches is AutoCAD???

More information is very helpful when looking for pointers.  Just as Eric said if you setup your signature so we know which version and what hardware you are using, and give more details it will get you the help you need.

I did countless videos years ago trying to figure this out.

Haha I just watched one of your videos about this last night!  Always trying to improve on my dormers as there always seems to be little “glitches” that I am obviously telling it incorrectly how to model it.  Not usually with the walls but with the ceiling above when I try to get it to be open to below on the edges.  Just extra fiddling around to get it to look good in interior shots and renderings.

This is not  a bug, just an annoyance.

I was referring to the part about the door handles on full height cabinets.  That does seem like it was a bug in certain plan templates.

    What happened was:

when adjusting a full height cab face even though both handles are set at x” from edge it will show incorrectly with the top of the handle off of the door in all 3d views.  like the center of the handle is at the edge of the door panel on the lower door.  So in my case it showed it on the door at the bottom and the built in microwave at the top of the handle.  Messing with defaults for all doors did nothing.  Until you go in and set that bottom door’s handle to something different, save it, then you can go back and set it default again and it fixes it.

As I mentioned this is not in my template but in a plan of a client I work with.  Not a current program glitch though.

    Thanks Eric and Ryan.

On the bottom door, the handle was already set to 3" from top but displayed as centered.  So I changed it to 2" from top, then back to 3", and it jumped into the expected place.

I'll call Chief to report the custom overlay panel issue.

I noticed this apparent bug yesterday but had not had the time to go back and play with the template to see if it gets fixed.  I just adjusted and went with it for then.  Now I am looking at it closer and I think it might be something with the template I was using as I was working on a clients plan which was already built and the glitch was there.  My own template seems to be fine so it might be just a rogue template that had a glitch that some users happen to have used to build their template at that time?

Try Fixing it in your .plan template and resaving to see if it works.

  7. Not a two poster but there is a four poster in the chief catalog that is Garage and accessories.  here is a pic of it.

BTW it's hard to let you know the best way to proceed if you don't have your signature setup.  you say posting into x11 so that helps.  But alot of the guys who are super helpful will pass on by your posting if they don't see that quickly in your signature along with some system specs.  They are super generous with their time but it is also limited so that they don't want or have time to ask for your specifics in order to lend a helping hand.

    Hope this helps somewhat.

  8. Hi Katherine Welcome to the forum.  Looks like you are newer.  It really helps as mentioned above to include your software version and some basic info on your hardware in your signature line as it will get you more help when the guys can see that info and not have to ask for it.  There are some amazingly talented guys on here who are super generous with their time but it is also limited so if they are browsing through and trying to help people lots of times they do not have the time to ask, what software version do you have, what is your video card, etc., etc.

That all being said sounds like your in a rendering mode with textures that don't work in that mode (such as vector view) if so try changing to standard or PBR view first.  Otherwise you may have your textures toggled off.  In the same button where there is the cross section slider, toggle shadows there is also a toggle textures on and off button.  Try that.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks.  I was thinking there must be a reason no one was mentioning it for the layout.  I had the suspicions that the .plan file would get too big and slow down if I added say 60 Cad detail sheets to it.  Wasn't thinking regarding the scaling issues with the layout version.

In X12, it can work like this:

Have an "Office Std. Details" (OSD) layout with all your details. You can store your CAD Details in the OSD Layout -- one detail per CAD Detail -- and then send them to the same OSD Layout. You can have all your eave details on one layout page, for example. So categories stay nicely organized and details are completely visual.

You have a Project layout, too. In X12, you can have two layouts open at the same time. Open the OSD layout and find the detail you want. Double-click to open. Immediately send to layout, choosing the Project Layout file. This is VERY fast, and keeps the scale of the CAD Detail.

BTW, if you want to create a new detail that's similar to an existing one, you can "Duplicate" the CAD detail in the project browser, and immediately start editing.

Look forward to the new version.

So we can learn is there a reason why to keep it in a separate layout instead of your standard layout template?  Or vs your plan template?

Looks like what they sent you was Blocked PDF references.  They need to send you the referenced PDF files too.

This is what I was kind of thinking it might be.  That would make sense as the one detail that is showing up looks like it was done from a Chief stock detail and customized.  Doesn’t look like the mid other details.

So then...  Once I have those pdf files they just need to be put in the same folder as the layout /plan file or how are they referenced?

Kind of a bummer to make any major changes job per job...  looks like I may be redrafting 65 details.. Their current tech guy who knows the very basic said they were just taking screen grabs and using them as a pdf pic detail.

  13. So this might be a good thread to ask this question to the experts here:

I have been working at getting more organized and currently have some cad details saved in my plan template and do the rest plan by plan from my library.

my plan is to save into cad details in one of my templates all of the details and send the ones I need to layout.

    what is better to do:

1.) put them in the .plan template

2.) put them in the .layout template (eventually I plan to setup the different layer sets to have 8.5x11, 11x17, & 22x34 on the same layout template but currently have three separate templates) so this would take more time to do but may be better about not slowing down the plan???

    thoughts and recommendations?

  14. Hi Guys.  Hope all are doing well on this Wednesday.

I am just starting to work with a new builder who had an "in-house cad expert" who is no longer doing their work.

As I am trying to get setup and a system built with them they sent me their .calibz file with all of their pre-done cad details which need a little tweaking but by most standards are not too bad and useable.  However when I import the library the majority of the details are just blank squares.  One of the details imported fine, but it does not look like their others (I have a printed pdf version that they had marked up looking to make some tweaks to the details and am able to see what they should look like.)  Anyone know a trick that I don't for this. I tried turning on all layers and added it to a cad detail page but it just places like an empty box.  Explode it and nothing.

Is this just a corrupted library?

When I use an exterior fixture from the library like an HVAC compressor, that fixture is on the exterior fixtures layer but it's label is on the fixtures layer.  Is there any way to change the label on the exterior fixtures so it displays on the exterior fixtures layer?  Currently I am labeling it with text and creating an exterior fixture text layer.

Select the item, open the DBX on the Layer or Line-style tab change the layer to the one you want it on.  If you don't have a specific layer try pressing define, copying the current layer naming it and setting it how you want it to appear then you will be able to turn on and off the layer.

There are some great videos on using layers in the KB.

Everytime I mull windows , there is a thin piece of trim material between the units that shouldn't be there.  This always happens, but this is the first time it's become painfully obvious because the window frame is black and the trim is cedar. The top of the bottom window and the bottom of the top window are at set to the same height prior to mulling.  See pic for reference.

Bottom window is a casement, top window is a picture.

    Untitled.jpg

I don't have that issue when mulling units unless there is a gap.  Can you post a plan file?

By chance did you try manually moving the window instead of with the dbx?  A window can be off by 1/16" in size or position and sometimes round to the 1/8" so maybe your lower windows is actually placed at 79 15/16" and your upper at 80???

Thanks, that worked! But it does raise some questions that were probably already answered when it was said "I'm confusing the program"? The moulding showed up when I built a room (4 basic walls). Being anilrentetive, moving the masonry wall to the outside is confusing to me? It's a load bearing wall I would think it should be in the "Main" layer? Masonry construction where I'm at (Outside Chicago), means dbl brick. All current modern residential construction is wood frame with brick veneer (I always have to explain what that means to someone who doesn't understand construction) Maybe the program can't decipher that? Either way, thanks, looks great now!

Maybe you can help me with another problem? On an L shaped staircase, how do I have One of the two with a wall instead of railing? (Close on top?)

    Welcome to the forum.

The K(nowledge) B(ase) has lots of info to help you with these types of things.  You will find the guys on this forum are amazingly helpful and very generous with their time!  But a quick search of the KB or even this forum will give you quick answers and helps you to receive that help when you really need it the most!

The staircase looks good and I help this helps you figure it out.

    https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03107/creating-a-stair-rake-wall.html

BTW the reason everyone will ask for your signature info is that ALOT of items that are asked about are different depending on what version and certain technical difficulties others with the same type of configurations have had the same glitch happen so they can help you fix it.

    Cheers!
