dshall
My default dimension format is set to 1/16", occasionally I want to change the format. I would like to know when a dimension is not of the primary format. To note this I can put in some trailing text that will have the "APPROX" symbol, how do I get that symbol? thanks
ebdesign
Are you referring to the "tilde"?
dshall
Are you referring to the "tilde"? LOL, Yeah, I think I am ..... it's been so long since Algebra 101 I forget this stuff, thanks Jim, it is the tilde key.
raltd9245
Are you referring to the "tilde"? Problem being there are no Tilde under the bridge.
JLDrafting
Approximate is actually a double tilde. I can't type it, but I know what it is.
Joe_Carrick
Personally, I prefer the special character +/- but Chief doesn't allow special characters to be added onto dimension text - at least not the same way we can with general text. kMoquin
I use the +/- symbol in the text macros.
Joe_Carrick
To use the +/- for trailing dimension text - hold down the alt key and type 0177 on the numeric keypad.
ebdesign
There are many symbols used for "approximate". Whatever, Chief uses "~" & it also uses "+/-". I'm going w/ that.

Hey, wait a minute, that tilde key is auto? I think I saw that somewhere.... if that is auto, that is perfect.

GeneDavis
So why is this intermittently not working for me? Is it only in play if the number, the dimension number, is inexact? Because I dimension wall-to-wall, the walls having been exact-dimension set, and I cannot get the tilde.
ebdesign
If the tilde is set to display & you don't see it, then the dimension is accurate........but only to 10-12 decimal pts. I have tildes set to display & then, when I see one, I move whatever to get rid of it.

I will start using this. Thanks to whoever started this thread...... oh, that was me.

Or, if you're kinda lost when using the numeric keyboard, just copy/paste from the Character Map or from existing text. (I'm not mentioning any names)
LevisL
Mac users can also use OPTION,SHIFT,+ to get the ± symbol. Then you don't need to use the macro.
