I'm only there for 1 hour at the most. I have measured two 250,000 sf manufacturing plants in my previous career and have a leather nail pouch to hold colored pens, two tape measures (30' & 100') and a grease rag to wipe hands. then I carried a clip board. Scott, there is a simplistic video on Room Planner; however, it may not have all the detail you are after. We have a few customers lined up to work with on putting more information together. In the mean time, if others have information to share, we would like to learn more on how people are measuring as-builts. Room Planner can be a good tool for as-builts and we are adding more functionality (besides an Android version). So, let us know what you need. I tell her it seems to be a bit slow at times but I get by. And then she starts quizzing me on what I use the Time Warner Cable Cable Service for. I explain to her that I use it for what everybody else uses it for...... you know.... downloading Product information Brochures, sending 19.999 MB Apple PDF's to clients and watching porn. And then this morning I want to watch Scott Harris's ROOM PLANNER VIDEO, and I can't watch more that 2 minutes before I get a buffering issue..... and this video is getting pretty good in spite of the fact that Scott Harris has the starring role. I think I will talk to the Time Warner Lady on Monday and get faster internet service so I can watch Scott Harris's video...... it looks interesting. You must have a slow system, maybe a one or so" I am supposed to do a speed test today, I just have not got around to it because I have spent that last 2.36 hours trying to watch Scott Harris's video. I think it would be very difficult to draw a two story 2750 sf home with a curved set of stairs and locate on site with exterior fireplaces, pools, sloped banks, trellis's retaining walls etc using room planner ............in 2.5 hours. That is the time it takes for a typical measure for a house of this size including over 200 pictures taken for reference. And time is money. This is a great tool for drawing a room or two, but try putting together a two story house with cantilevers, duct chases etc using a computer on site. This is not to mention all of the side notes like how tall is a raked wall, how tall is the retaining wall, what size is the ridge beam, how high off the floor is the bottom of the ridge beam, how large and at what spacing are the floor joists and rafters. Where are the dropped ceilings, and where are the steps in the slab and what is the height from first floor to second floor. A lot of information needs to be gathered in a limited amount of time. As I think about it, there is a ton of information that can be quickly noted by hand on site that can then be put into a set of plans back at the office. Drawing/sketching as built by hand has got to be quicker. But this is a great tool for the simpler projects....... and I do have an open mind. Thanks again Scott, nice job. Charlie Posted September 28, 2014 Share Posted September 28, 2014 Interesting to see how everybody measures. I do a lot of older homes and they have lots of different wall thicknesses. My system works pretty well and it is the one which with I am comfortable. I have an old laser, teflon coated 25' tape, 100' tape, module from a smart level (it will give you roof pitches in a snap), stud finder/laser level, camera and.........paper and pen. I do overall exterior dimensions, all the wall thicknesses, each room overall and each wall - wall to openings to wall. That is the best method as it will end up giving you multiple dimensions for each wall in case they don't add up correctly in the model or you have forgotten one. I also do not like to see 1/4" increments in my models, so I round down to the nearest 1/2". This way in the field the room will be incrementally bigger than life. Just a laser don't cut it by itself and it doesn't work to good in the sun or for outside to outside corners. As for the electronics ipad I think pen and paper is simpler than messing around with a screen you are trying to see in the sun and sweating all over it. Might work fine inside. I can also use the camera for outside corners, just stand away from the corner take that measurement to the closest corner, zoom in to the other corner and take a measurement, it will do the calculation to get an exact measurement. Additionally, I always take "extra" dimensions to make sure I stay on track - for example, if I can get line of sight across the whole house front to back or side to side, I will write that dimension down as well. It has saved my behind in the past. The system described in the video looks like it would be better applied to an insurance/restoration company where you would build each room separately, like you would in Xactimate or similar. I did take advantage of the discount on the Leica Disto and picked one up. Looks like an upgrade over the Bosch, although I don't really need 1/32" accuracy.
