Here's a project I just finished. With the exception of 2 imported materials (grass & mulch), everything was modeled and rendered in X10.

I re-ran my experiment that I did with the Beta version last week, here are the results. The first image is X9, the second image is X10 Beta and the last one is the latest version of X10 that I downloaded this morning. Not much of an improvement, I guess I've got to make some more adjustments to the lighting to get back to the image I had with X9.

Chief has replied to my letter: " We are aware of some loss in functionality in the Ray Trace rendering. In our efforts to improve the real-time rendering for the new Physically Based Rendering Technique, we were forced to refactor some of the Material Properties. As a side effect, the reflective settings in the Ray Tracer were impacted. We are implementing a fix for the Ray Tracer that should be available with the official release that is scheduled this month." I'm looking forward to the full release. Hopefully the fix will restore X9's ray-trace quality. Eric

I've written to Chief about this issue and hopefully they are aware of it and are working on a fix, I'll post an update when I hear. Chief support is usually very good at responding. Eric

Yes the lights are on in the X10 image, in fact you can see a slight bit of light coming from below the shade on the wall but the shade itself is not illuminated. I compared the lampshade properties with what I had in X9 and found that the emmisive setting was off (I had it at 50% in X9). The emmisive setting is somewhat different in X10 so I set it to 130,000 (average light bulb) and ran it again. Below is what I got after 12 passes...

After reading the posts above, I decided to try my own experiment. I rendered a past project in X10 using the same settings that I had used in X9 when I originally did this project, the results are below. As you will see, in the first image (on top), which was done in X9, the lighting is brighter overall and the two table lamps are much different as compared to the second image (bottom) which was done in X10. I'll mess around with the settings a bit to see if I can correct the image but until the problems get worked out, I'll stick with X9.

Here are some renderings I did for a developer who is rehabbing a property in Los Angeles. Everything was drawn and rendered in X9 and with the exception of a few minor items, all icons came from the Chief library.

Thanks, I appreciate your comment. I did 30 passes although I probably could have gotten away with less; I believe it took about 90 minutes to run. I've found that the key to getting a great looking ray-trace is to keep the ambient light to a minimum (zero if possible), make use of additional lighting and also get to know how to use all the features on the lighting tab. It takes alot of experimentation but once you have learned the proper use of all the features Chief offers (and I'm always learning), the results can be just as good as anything from Blender or 3DS Max. Also, get to know bump maps and how to use them, they add alot of realism to the textures.

Here's a bedroom project I recently finished. While I did bring in a few objects from outside (bed, tv & some of the accessories), everything was modeled and rendered in Chief.

I have an opportunity to collaborate with a kitchen & bath company that is currently working in 2020. Has anyone had experience with file sharing between Chief and 2020?

I never give out my source files, PDF or JPG only. Some of you have mentioned that you always copyright your drawings, would you be willing to show an example of this?

Open the dialog box for your camera and make sure that "show shadows" is checked.

My current project calls for an infinity edge pool (aka vanishing edge, zero edge, disappearing edge, etc.). Does anyone have some tips on the best way to draw this?

I found some great tutorials on YouTube (Blender Guru) and I messed around with it just a bit but I haven't had time to really get into it. Instead, I have been concentrating on improving my Ray Trace techniques in Chief.

I have noticed that the clarity of the 360 samples on the Chief website is much better that what I have been able to achieve so far. I just did a test with the Breckenridge plan which I downloaded from Chief and did a Ray Trace. I set it for 2048x1024 @ 300 dpi. I took almost 15 hrs. to do 10 passes (lot's of lighting here) but the end result was disappointing, very blurry. Can anyone suggest the best settings to use for better resolution? Eric
