jcldraft Posted yesterday at 09:08 AM Share Posted yesterday at 09:08 AM Chieftans, I'm looking for some good suggestions for a new PC for X17? Right now I'm using: Model = HP 750-116. Processor = AMD A10-8750 Radeon R712 core, 4 core RG, 3,600 Mh, 2 core. RAM = 12 GB. Display = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970. HDD system = 12 GB NFTS, HDD storage = 2TB, NFTS. Running Microsoft Windows 10 Home Version. Your suggestions for an upgrade would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance. (I'm using X16 now, not sure how to edit the signature info below.) ComputerMaster86 Posted yesterday at 02:58 PM Share Posted yesterday at 02:58 PM I will use my custom SFF computer as an example to give you an idea of what you may want to look for with specs. Right now I am running a computer that has an... AMD Ryzen 7-7700X 8-Core 16-Thread Socket AM5 CPU Rated at 4.5 Ghz This has been a great CPU overall but, you will may want to go with something with more cores. 64 GB's of DDR 5 6,000 Mt/s Memory via (2) 32 GB Modules (I am using the AMD Expo Profile) Some people will do just fine with 32 GB's of ram. This is probably overkill for me. 1 TB Samsung Pro NVME M.2 SSD I recommend bumping up to a 2TB drive or higher. nVidia RTX 3070 Super with 12 GB's on Board Memory This is OK and has served me well but, if you are doing lots of renderings you may want a more powerful graphics card. Many recommend a 4080 / 5080 or higher or something like the AMD Radeon 7900 XTX.

(I'm using X16 now, not sure how to edit the signature info below.) My setup is in my signature. The video card is an RTX 3080Ti which seems to handle rendering at a very reasonable speed. Of course an RTC 4080 or 4080Ti would be significantly better. The GTX 970 will not perform physical rendering for you, so that needs to be changed for sure.

mthd97
Have you taken a look at the new Mac Studios ? I switched to Mac M1 in 2023 and I am very pleased with the performance of Chief and other CAD software on my Mac. Just my observations. I really had to do a lot of extra work to look after my old PC’s and the same is true of my PC laptop that I have now. They are not as much work as they used to be but I am saving much time with Apple devices these days. They cost a bit more, you can ask other Chief Mac Studio users to chime in.
DBCooper
Just make sure it meets the recommended system requirements listed here: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/products/sysreq.html You might also want to check out this blog: https://www.chiefarchitect.com/blog/computer-for-design-and-gaming/
jcldraft
Thanks everyone for your responses. mthd97: switching to MAC is not an option for me at this time - I'm adamant of the downtime transition would bring. I went to Amazon to check what's available for shipping to the Bahamas and I came up with the list attached. I'm not fixated on the manufacturer just trying to get a good grasp of the configerations. JonathanK
Personally, I'd go with the bottom one in your screenshot. It's the CPU that's doing it for me. That 14900F that's on the top one feels a little underpowered. But in reality...all those are light years better than what you have right now. I never really was a "big capacity HDD" guy. I think you could get by with a 1TB higher end HDD and be just fine. Then archive files off down the road if need be. Build good habits that way. Or utilize cloud storage...
