How Easy Is It To Create 2D Details In Chief?

Should I be considering a 2D cad program for details or does Chief have good tools?

CA has a lot of predrawn details, but I am unable to use any of them. i have no problem drawing the details I require in CA. or alternatively it is easy to import manufacturers dwg details.

I suggest sticking with one program. If you need/want CA for what it is, then learn to use its CAD tools. CA can't rival AutoCAD or other dedicated CAD programs, but it doesn't make sense to invest the money (and time) into a separate CAD program if you'll be producing your document set with CA. That's my two cents.

I disagree with Robert.  Chief is better at making Details than AutoCAD - but you need to know how to use Chief's capabilities to get those results.

I never used AutoCAD or any 2D program. I have just used Chief since Version 4 to do whatever I required but I have observed that what one must have or should have is a purely a personal preference as opposed to anything actually "real" or significant.

Prior to starting with Chief, I had hundreds of already drawn details that transferred into chief very well, a few lineweight adjustments and done.

You can create any detail you need in Chief. I have hundreds. Some made from scratch, some edited from DWGs provided by Architects or Engineers.
