Which program do people use to create decent site plans?
DavidJPotter replied to ED-209's topic in General Q & A
I have never wanted anything other than Chief Premier for all my CAD needs. DJP -
In fact, you did, again thank you. DJP

Thanks Glenn, I will try that (that makes the box window the "wrong" depth but I will take it if it works. Hey, you are of course correct, my point is that improper depth is improper function and should be repaired if possible by Chief Inc. Thanks again, Glenn! DJP

See attached imagte and attached plan file When I try to emulate a raised floor box window I get unwanted side wall artifacts using the box window tool. I have submitted a case report to Tech support but I thought I would also ask you guys if you have a workable solution. DJP Box Window Fail.zip

This phenomenon is commonly caused by accidentally creating a CAD line or other object way off screen, so when you accidentally or on purpose fill the screen, the software is programmed to include all objects when you hit "F6" or tap the "Fill Screen" icon. The software then "Fills the screen" to include all objects, intended or otherwise. This should also effect full overview cameras as well. If you can see it in a camera view it is still there, just off your screen in plan views. Find the unintended object, delete it and then all should be well. The only other cause I can think of is if you selected the "All Off" set while in plan view (you can do this by accidentally hitting your mouse scroll wheel). Just make sure while in plan view which layer set you have selected. DJP

Bump

it seems to be a random, wild variable. In my experience the toolbars seem to mostly stay put and if missing can be brought back using known means. It is annoying when they do a bunk when I am trying to get something done. DJP

Who are the top 10 Chief Architect User Experts?
DavidJPotter replied to DouglasC's topic in General Q & A
Chief Inc has no such official list of "top users" so anything else would be, by default opinion. I nominate Dan Bauman of Minnesota, USA, Glenn Woodward of Sydney, Australia. There are many others but perhaps we can create such a list here in this thread. My Amended List: Dan Baumann Chiefexperts.com Glen Woodward, Sydney, Austrailia David Michael of Chieftutor.com Michael (Alaskan Sun) Wasilla, Alaska Scott, D.S. Hall Architect of San Diego, CA. Joe Carrick Architect San Diego, CA Terry Munson USA https://www.amazon.com/Residential-Design-Using-Chief-Architect/dp/0692135936/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1533862093&sr=1-1 Cheryl Crane USA Wendy Welton, Architect USA Perry, Disneyland, CA., "where Pig's really fly". AKA "Drawzilla". There are others but these people came to mind first DJP -
Thank you, Mark! DJP

Eric indicated that you look at the Roof tab Settings, Room Dialog box settings of the plan he edited for you. That IS how you get the resulting roofs thus autogenerated. The basic data is to be found in the Build Roof Dialog - Roof Styles tab. You learn to do roofs by one: learning the Wall Specification Box pre-settings made on the Structure Tab and Roof tab by study and practice. Manual Roof editing and creating is also a process of study followed by lots of practice failing and succeeding. It takes a while to gain real competence with those tools. Whether Auto Build followed by manual editing or just manually creating the roofs are based upon your understanding and competence. DJP

There is a bonus "Barn Door" library offered for SSA members at the Chief Architect Website. You can also search at "3D Warehouse" online for .skp files that might work for your purposes. In either case, you place a "doorway" for the wall penetration and then place the "Barn door" door symbol, aligning it to the doorway. They currently go together as a pair to emulate a barn door instance. DJP

I was able to do exactly as you describe but successfully using 4" walls. I enclosed the indent with a wall divider wall, set the floor up and the ceiling down with an overall depth of exactly 6". I recommend you try again. DJP

Place the files on your hard drive, then open those .plan files or .pl1 files in Chief Architect Premier X8 and save them. After you do that you can then open them in X9 and X10. DJP

Please post a copy of your plan and layout files so others can see what you see and look at the settings etc. DJP
-
Since what you say is theoretically impossible, can you supply more detailed information about what you are seeing, and under what conditions please? DJP
-
I do not know about Scott or you but I intend to post it to Tech Support, as that behavior is unwanted, I agree. DJP

Since you did not choose to share the plan file with us (Oops, I see that you did now), we can only guess what is the matter. I would recommend that you check your "Locate Objects" settings in "Dimension Defaults" on "Dimensions" and "Auto Exterior Dimensions" settings. If your first floor dimensions are measuring to "Surfaces" instead of "Main Layer" could account for the discrepancy of dimensions, floor to floor. DJP

Scott, respectfully, what exactly do you mean please? DJP

The attached document was created by one of the World's best rendering persons: Jintu Montego. These have been posted here several times in the past. Ray Tracing is a process of balancing lighting and material properties to get an aesthetic result. It is an Art as opposed to a Science due to the infinite variables involved including your PC hardware and operating system. You work it making adjustments until you obtain an acceptable result. Asking you to do a search here was and is good advice as the first step to a solution after you read the applicable Reference Manual sections on the problem, watch applicable video tutorials that address in this case "Ray Tracing" to be found at the Chief Architect website. After that it is a matter of trial and error practice creating an acceptable result which then brings you personal competence. I do wish you success. DJP Raytrace Settings-Forum Notes.pdf
