  1. That weird shadow is from this soffit: If that soffit is 9" deep (or less) the shadow disappears. If it is 25" deep (or more) the shadow disappears. Lighting adjustments also remove that shadow. I would suggest you send this plan to Tech Support.
  2. The material data is dependent on the type of material used for the solid. It would not necessarily be a reliable way of reporting volume.

  4. Why don't you just use the free SketchUp app online? I use it to edit symbols for the same reason you mentioned...I only have SketchUp 2017.
  5. Any item that has an elevation set based on the terrain or 'floor' will move up / down with the terrain. All those object would need their elevations set as "Absolute".
  6. May I suggest that people adding shortcuts could also consider using a single keystroke in front of a symbol name instead of one that requires the shift button. Like this ' or perhaps the space bar. It's the really big button at the bottom of most keyboards and super easy to find! You could also do the exact same thing with keywords and keep your user library folders a bit leaner.

  9. Joe, unless I'm not fully understanding, you don't exactly describe how to create a link. Wouldn't it make more sense for most people to simply add keywords to the search attributes for frequently used objects?
  10. Hi Ryan, what you need is a custom Default Set that has a customized Dimension Default. I have one of these for renovation projects and it's simply a matter of switching between default sets to alter the dimensioning style from exterior framing layer to interior surfaces. I would recommend that you open Help and search "Dimension Defaults".

  12. You've followed the correct steps, although you don't need to make a block of those items, you simply need to select all 3 and then convert to symbol (Millwork category). Of, course the cap and skirt must be set at the correct heights relative to the post before executing that function. You may need to post an image of the problem and describe what wasn't working for you.
  13. This. Set the layer, set the schedule properties and create a custom schedule. You can isolate almost any type of object this way into an item-specific schedule.

  15. Update..... For those also having an issue with Chief 'remembering' their window sizes, I believe I have found the 'issue' (for lack of a better word) and a resulting fix. Side window sizes can be affected by the inherent size of the Walkthrough Preview Dialog. Chief remembers and prefers this window more than any others! So...if you don't want the Walkthrough Preview window visible and would like your other windows reduced and remembered the solution is to: Display the Walkthrough Preview Window Relocate that Window to a secondary monitor Adjust the remaining window sizes to your preferred widths / positions. Turn off the display of the Walkthrough Preview Window. Because of Chief's preference and memory of the Walkthrough Preview window size and position, Chief will no longer adjust your other side windows to fit the space that would have been occupied by the Walkthrough Preview Window. Whew!
  16. Anthony, you'd need to post the plan so we can how what's going on. It appears as though you may be using a brick ledge foundation or a pony wall for the foundation. Or perhaps your foundation doesn't align with walls above. Or perhaps the foundation wall layers are set up incorrectly.

  18. Pattern lines on wall don't always change with certain adjustments. To get the wall to refresh, simply double click the wall then close the dialog without changing anything. F12 forces a model rebuild however pattern lines don't always rebuild correctly for all object when using F12. Sometimes you need to 'open' and then 'close the object to get pattern lines to update.
  19. Automatic Framing can slow things down, especially for roofs. It can make a big difference to turn off all automatic framing throughout the design process and only build the framing once you are working on section views.

  21. You can make a texture by using a rendered image of a modeled surface using Chief. Here's a bit of an example: I created a model of siding boards using 3d solids and spaced them with 7" and 3" exposures. I then replicated them up the wall in 10" increments. The 3d solids were painted a material to resemble a single siding board. I then rendered a image of the wall and cropped it so it would be seamless. I then created a new material using the cropped image as the texture file. It took about as long to create the texture as it did to type this up!   22. There are a few ways to get the exterior casing continuous. The windows must be spaced so the exterior casing from one is perfectly butted against the casing of adjacent windows. If they have the same material, they should blend seamlessly. For example if there is exactly 6" between windows then the exterior casing should be 3". Remove the casing from all those windows and use a Material Region to represent the casing. A 3d solid can work as well but is more work than the Mat Reg. In some case where there are multiple stacked windows with various sizes / spaces, the Material Region is the simplest.
