  1. If you look at the picture and want it without the furniture, it would take less than 5 min. to re-make inside Chief (dont you think Glenn?) . You could then put the outside (through windows) image into Chief (place on a ploy sold or slab) or just do that part in Photoshop. Either way, the room is so basic you might as well remodel it.
  2. That is tricky. There are 3rd party plugins for Sketchup that help do this sort of thing, but I am going to tell you right now its a rabbit hole that may lead to spending much more time than simply rebuilding the scene in CA and taking another render. Can you share the picture here so I can see what you're trying to do specifically?
  3. your welcome sir - this forum is probably the best forum of any product i know of, and makes CA the product it is to some degree. always nice to try and give back after so many help me.
  4. You can easily assign them to any layer you want. Make a new layer, name it, and then go into the specifications Dbx and change that items layer to whatever you created. As a side point, i've been starting to make my columns with the cabinet tools - much easier to use, and you can make fast adjustments as necessary. However, if you are trying to break the sections out as you mention that wouldn't be possible with the cabinet tool as far as I know....but I usually supplement with 2D section showing molding buildup etc. https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?/topic/8636-using-cabinet-tool-for-column/?hl=%2Bcabinet+%2Bcolumn
  5. Photoshop does support 3D imports, and there are some very cool things you can do with it, but exporting back out to CA from that point may be doable, but very tricky. Both apps support DAE. However, Id really love to know why you would want to do that - what are you trying to do?
  6. Yeah, so far I am liking grey-scale for everything. Footnotes are more about accuracy than anything else. I've found notes that exist all over a page are more easy to make mistakes with since you can miss them. When I check plans before they go out it takes 25% of the time with footnotes, and a lot of subs I talk to like them for a similar reason. I guess its a preference thing.
  7. I use Acrobat to convert a color print to grey-scale for a pretty good effect that actually makes the outside lines show are darker lines - but yes, it would be great if we had profile line control - or an easier way to make these lines by hand if we had to. What I really wish is that the story-pole dimensions worked better. Current_without_detail sheets 6.pdf
  8. I just went through placing a bunch of random lighting fixtures and I didn't see it once. Someone will ask you to attach a plan to show...
  9. I wasn't using the revolve tool, but check it out if you work it in other aspects more. Its not a crash each time at a certain place, since I can reopen CA and start wroking again - get past that point it crashed before, only to have it crash down the line again. Its so unstable I dont think you can work with it inside CA.
  10. I've dove into unreal, but still use Lumion for everyday work product until I get more comfortable. Unreal is the way of the future without question. You can actually develop charterers that someone can control on their Xbox or PlayStation (or PC obviously) at home and interact with their future home. Turn on and off lights, open cabinets, turn on water, get in a car and try driving into their garage with a virtual car. I'm learning all this right now, and its amazing.
  11. Scott - you have to launch the 2nd app through your terminal window. 1. Launch your terminal. 2. Type "open -n -a "APPLICATION NAME" I believe you can make a shortcut/script so you have an icon if you want to launch in the future. Obviously dont type the quotation marks.
  12. golly-gees I guess you are right. I never thought about opening 2 apps.
  13. Yeah Im with Michael - I can't get 2 layout files to open.
  14. I get a TON of crashes when I start messing around with faces. Anyone else?

Check this out - https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/search.html?q=balcony&backendClass=entity You'll get close but I doubt you will find the exact one you want - you may need to model part of it yourself.
  16. Thanks guys - great video. So if you go to a "solid" it basically becomes a 1-way dead end street? You can no longer edit the shape other than scale and "Boolean"? I could swear there was a video showing a basic push/pull in action inside Chief....maybe I am wrong through.
  17. We have the option of converting slabs, poly-solids, etc into something called a "solid" which then brings up a "3d shape specification" dbx that has very limited edit-ability. In fact, you lose almost all edit ability you had on a slab/poly solid etc converting to this "solid" - I wonder why its even an option. What is a "solid"...and why would you want to convert to this more limited shape type?
  18. This was very helpful - thank you again Wendy. Is there a way to have your CD 1/4" have all of the existing dimensions and text become 1/8" values? Say you have 1/4" drawings but you want to have the same drawings print at 1/8" or some other scale...
  19. For residential (traditional styles) modeling, I agree CA is much faster. However, you really dont get stuck in Vectorworks on odd issues since you can always revert to simple modeling - and CD creation is better inside Vectorworks (true BIM custom schedules/notes). I find CA terrible at basic shape modeling for reasons that ought not to be - but its other tools (roofs, cabinets, etc) are really powerful. If someone's business is residential architecture CA is tough to match at the present time.
  20. I found one in 3DWarehouse - its basic though. https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model.html?id=f3bd3aaee70021f13b9f5fd1ade63890
  21. A while back I did a custom eyebrow dormer after watching this video in Vectorworks, and was actually amazed how fast it was inside CA. As Glenn says if you go the auto-dormer route that can be fast too.
  22. I agree 100%. Id like to see it be an added tool, not in place of simple windows. So something like "complex windows/doors" tool. Having this tool inside CA would be massive improvement for light commercial projects.
  23. Programs like Vectorworks and Archicad may have incredible BIM schedules and features, and my office is 80% Vectorworks still (2D primary). However, those other apps can be a lot more modeling/time intensive on otherwise simple things in CA. Here is another architect who posted a good video on building an eyebrow window inside Vectorworks. Most will watch this and think "good lord I am glad this can be done in CA much faster", and that is why I think we are all trying to make CA work for us. Now, the problem with CA can be you get to the general goal faster but if you run into a glitch or problem all the time savings is out the window. Thats where I hope knowing this app on the Glenn W. level could be MUCH MUCH better.
  24. One aspect of Chief I think we sometimes forget is that everything they do in Premier is dumbed-down to make their DIY products. None of us really know how much that market effects the "pro" version of CA, but the problem with Chief is they have somewhat opposing views from their clients as to what's important. How important is sophisticated modeling and scheduling to a DIY user? I really think Chief has a lot of potential, but I often think that other apps designed only for professionals may end up moving so far past Chief in key areas perhaps I am wasting my time on a product that is attached to DIY niche market. This also explains why the eye candy aspect has been so important.
