Creating window from polyline

Hi again Heroes!   I created a special shaped polyline and turned it into a symbol for a window and inserting it into the wall 6".  But it wants to make the opening in the wall a rectangle instead of the shape I made.  Anyone able to give me what it is I need to do?  Or a real clear video of how you should make the custom polyline windows with all the steps would be great.  I am using x12 on this current project.  I would greatly appreciate any help as I have been working on this off and on for days.

This is what I am trying to make into windows.

All these were done with the window spec dialog.  I do a CAD detail from view and draw polylines and lines to get the dimensions needed, but the numbers are used in the window spec dialog.

Those look great!  Unfortunately, they want the center big window to be one large pane of glass instead of two.  I couldn't figure out how to get that geometry in the window spec dba.   I have learned out how to have the polyline window set into and cut the wall, but I can't figure out how to have it not have a square section cut out along with it.

Just place a fixed window and go to the shape page and set the right height to 0 (it will make it 1/4" but that should be close enough).

Thanks you for helping me.  I think I could use something like this for the flanking windows, but still have difficulty with the center window.  When I use the arches like dog ear, I can't get the arch to match the 6/12 slope of the ceiling. I can't use the option of Match Room because the wall the windows is on is more towards the center of the house where the roof isn't gabled.

Another tip: Even if you create a cad detail from view (I never do this) it can be helpful to add cad polylines in an elevation or section view with the line length displayed. I place these polylines on a reference layer which I turn off for final views. I prefer doing this because this keeps those polylines in the actual view and I can snap windows to these polylines. And, the dimensions of these windows are always subject to changes throughout the design process, so 'cad detail from view' is not very helpful to me.

This allows me to quickly and accurately 'mock up' the shapes and then specify the windows...saving me time away from the window specification dialog.

My advice:

1.  Draw your windows in an elevation view using CAD.

SIDE NOTE: I think this is essentially what Gene was referring to when he mentioned using a CAD Detail From View.  The use of that view was just to get the required snaps and lines to work with.  In X16 though I rarely find the CAD Detail From View step necessary though since we get all sorts of snaps in elevations now:

2.  Draw your all your windows using the Shape tab.

NOTE:  I set the height and width by just snapping my window to the CAD lines, so I didn't actually have to enter those numbers.

3.  Copy/Paste and Reflect to create the second flanker and delete your CAD to finish.

By the way, to answer your original question, If your symbol is set to Inserts into Wall you can just click the Edit Wall Cutout Polyline and then adjust the shape of that polyline manually.

Thanks, this answered the question on the rectangle box that I couldn't figure out.  However, I think you other solutions are even better ways for me to approach a window of this style in the future.  Appreciate your help!

Perfect!  Great info. Thanks so much!
