Yes, I've read that several times looking for a guarantee that legacy licenses will not stop working. It's implied but not specifically stated. And I found the SLA, using Help search for "license." It also does not mention how long the legacy license lasts. Does that mean forever? Or when Chief decides to deactivate it? End User License Agreement Chief Architect, Inc. End User Software License Agreement for Chief Architect® Software NOTICE TO USER: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: THIS IS A CONTRACT. BY INSTALLING, COPYING OR USING THIS SOFTWARE, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT, ON YOUR OWN BEHALF AND ON THE BEHALF OF THE ENTITY BY WHOM YOU ARE EMPLOYED OR REPRESENT. No, they're not going to guarantee any future pricing. As far as I've seen, they aren't even guaranteeing that legacy licenses will work forever. Someone said that information would be found in the Software License Agreement (a binding contract) but even though I read it and memorized it, that was eight years ago and I forgot some of the details. Does anyone have access to a legacy SLA, or know where to find it on our systems? I looked on mine and couldn't find it...
-
To be fair, users who aren't paying SSA are not reaping the benefits of future development. I have no problem with someone who wants to simply chug along with an older version that they own. But I also see Chief's need to stay profitable, and support that too. They call stuff like this a "shake-up" for a reason.
-
Doug, maybe you meant to quote the thread author. I don't have any problems showing terrain in elevations, but thanks for the info. You can probably edit your post to tag the OP so he is sure to be notified of your great tips.
-
I'll offer a couple of more comments. For me personally, should I opt out of SSA at some point I'll simply keep an older system running, to avoid OS obsolescence. I've done it before with other software. As a "spotty" user, I would also consider the pop-in / pop-out option of off-and-on rental. That seems like a very reasonable option for spotty users like myself, including new users. If I were a full time designer and used Chief for my livelihood, maintaining legacy SSA wouldn't even be a decision- it would be automatic, and paid happily. New full time users will simply have to compare their options and make their own decisions. I'm happy that I'm a legacy user with ownership options. Finally- kudos to @ChiefArchitect for allowing this thread to stay open and for your customers to be allowed to air our thoughts. It's a "big" company that would do so. I have to confess that if I were you, most of these posts would get the "delete" button.

Nothing, the program is showing the terrain as it exists at the elevation cut line and beyond. I have never (seldom, should say) been able to get automatic terrain lines to show how I want in elevation. I turn them off and use CAD.

As @MPDesign explained directly above this post, select the Room and hit the Make Room Molding Polyline button (also explained by @TeaTime in Post 3), and choose the crown molding. THEN select the new Molding Polyline created, and hit the Add Break tool: Add TWO breaks to the Molding Polyline, and adjust accordingly:

For me personally (small design/builder 5-6 houses/yr) I will probably eventually drop out of SSA. Partly due to this change, but also because I very rarely use it for support, and I'm looking to move 3D client models to TM. SSA was always required because I need to show clients 3D models, but with alternatives for that it becomes less necessary. I have only called tech support two times in eight years, and those were both in the last month and had to do with a video driver issue on an older laptop, and a Mac OS issue. I started with X7 and skipped a couple of versions just because I don't use the program daily, and can get by with any version. I enjoy the new features, many of which I specifically asked for, but I never had any problems getting permitted with X7. At this point X14 is robust enough to keep me happy indefinitely. I'm going to buy SSA for X15 just because that's my habit and the money isn't an issue, but purchase of future upgrades will be based solely on there being enough new features coming to justify the cost. My concern is - will my perpetual license remain "perpetual" forever, or will they change that policy too, down the road? They will have that right, just like they eliminated dongles at one point and required everyone to log in their software over the internet. Nowhere in the FAQs does it say the perpetual license will be permanent forever. The language leaves them a backdoor to pull even legacy licenses that are expired, if they choose. From the FAQ: I already own a perpetual legacy license. Will the license I already own on or before January 9, 2023 expire in the future? No, any existing perpetual legacy license will not expire and will continue to function. Hmm, they left off the word "forever" at the end of that answer. How long, exactly, will the legacy licenses "continue to function"? We'll see. Hope I didn't just put a target on my back lol.

How to make the terrain slope around my walkout basement
Chrisb222 replied to AlexDiversified's topic in General Q & A
Get rid of those elevation lines and the lowered region. Use Elevation Regions instead (Elevation Data submenu). Make one to replace the lowered region at the walkout door, and another to wrap the sides and front of the building. Set this second one to 0 height, then you'll probably have to adjust your Subfloor Height Above Terrain value in the Terrain Specs. -
exterior ray trace Exterior Ray Trace Rendering / Lighting Help
Chrisb222 replied to Legacy-HNoles's topic in General Q & A
@Legacy-HNoles I use these settings for an initial exterior CPU ray trace (I can't do RTRT on my system, and do not use PBR): 14 passes seems about right. Less than that is too grainy, and more is diminishing returns. Takes about 4 minutes on my system at this (relatively low) resolution. I then save the image and open in Gimp (free image editor like Photoshop) and apply Unsharp Mask, contrast/color balance, etc, and do cleanup/touchup. Here's an example of an image I made using these techniques: Tips: - You can quickly evaluate lighting and shadows and such, and save time for trial and error by lowering the Resolution or Height/Width in the General panel. Just remember the settings to restore them for the final run. - You can also save time for trial and error by temporarily turning off Photon Mapping on the Advanced panel. - Even after the ray trace is done, you can still adjust the settings on the Image Properties panel for changing the colors, contrast, etc. by accessing the Adjust Image Properties button:- 1 reply

Not much to choose from: There was a suggestion recently asking for more control of parametric doors. You can "fake" a center bar(s) using a glass panel style, setting the number of lites, and making the glass panes a solid material, but it's very limited:
-
Only works if you use one of the parametric door styles, not a library symbol.
-
Not sure exactly what you're after but deleting all layers in the Ceiling Finish DBX of the Room Specs seems to work...? Make sure you "Build Framing" and have "Framing, Roof Rafters" Layer set to display in 3D views.
-
Do you have View > Line Weights toggled on? It may also be on one of your toolbars:
-
In addition to what has been suggested, once you enter all of your data into the Material List, you can hit the Select All button and then the Update TO Master List (see pics). This will save all of the data you've entered into your Material List for updating to future material lists. Then when you generate a new Material List, once again hit the Select All button, then hit Update FROM Master List (the button left of Update TO Master List), and this will populate all your custom data into the fields. The Master List is program-wide and your data will be stored and available in all plans. Side note; for dimensional lumber you'll probably want to use Buy List for calculating costs, which pulls from your Saved Structural Member Reporting Defaults, and which can also contain pricing for individual lumber items that will then automatically populate into the material list.

Nice video Steve. I like your Loom videos with the playback speed control. You talk slow enough that I can watch them at 1.7x and still follow along. And it's entertaining to hear you speedtalk

I've been living with this because I always had to go in and change the color of the pattern lines anyway, but I made a suggestion to restore the function Michael described. I also asked for color setting in the dialog box. Fingers crossed.
-
Could be Chief wants to deprecate the entire function?? From X14 Help (bold mine): The Edge and Pattern Line Defaults settings are included for legacy files and are not the recommended method of specifying this information. See Edge and Pattern Lines. I think that's wrong. Edge and Pattern Lines is the best way to create elevations IMO.
-
To my knowledge, as Michael said there is no actual default setting. This used to be the case in X10, and yes it would remember the last used value, even across plans. Somewhere along the line it was removed as it no longer functions that way in X12 or X14. Not sure why they removed that but it would be good to get it back. I have never found any preference or default settings in plan or layout to change the default values. Hope I'm wrong.

Yes, it saved me from the same frustration you were experiencing, not only in material selection but everywhere. Glad to help.
