Welcome aboard. BTW this really belongs in the Q & A section. Tips is "I have a tip", QA is "I want to know"-happens a lot. You'll also see suggestions to fill out your signature which can help getting answers. In any case-for kitchens l use 11-17 most often. Allows me to print lots/often in color without care. I work on retainer I get pretty free handing clients revisions. Easy to reprint when the installer's dog eats the prints. I'm often asked for some pages in progress (electric, framing/blocking, mechanical/plumbing, lighting) even though the kitchen is final but far enough along. I can scan site measurements with the same machine so I always have a clean copy Arch D which is easier to layout depends on the project. Often when that is needed for a kitchen I'm collaborating with an architect who just wants something to drop into their drawings. FWIW I looked into 18 x 24 and decided it was not worth it for me to add in house. Most often I provide-: Cover page with notes layout table (sometimes a legend)-Numbered cabinet schedule(s), numbered/dimensioned floor plan, numbered/dimensioned elevations, floor plan with plain English descriptions (cabinet map), details for the installer (what depends on the installer some get more), page with few 3D views (varies a lot what) something in the way of lighting/electric, there is usually a page or two needed for the cabinet manufacturer which I include for the client anyway. Appliance cut sheets if needed. When needed- I add in existing/demo/construction plans, framing if applicable, more detail, whole building map when multiple rooms. When structural specs are needed I may included something but lists certification by others (most of the engineers want to do the drawing themselves) I always drawer at minimum a complete box and the adjacent rooms to size. In many cases I will go so far as several rooms out for views, add correct roof and deck (great to check duct clearance location) It's all a good bit more than someone is going to get from the average 2020 jockey but once templates are set up in Chief it's not that much extra work besides-clients love it, makes contractors very happy, cuts down on phone calls, covers my butt, overall it gets me work. Kitchen Templates- Layout template is set up with all possible pages delete or move what's not needed. Plan template starts with 4 walls, a "0,0" marker, half a dozen elevations which are already sent to the layout (move them add/delete as needed), a couple of perspective cameras (same as elevations), a couple of CAD detail pages (schedules are set in one, legends in another, odds and ends in the third-need to work on all that a little). Most often I import defaults from other plans, have taken to using two different groups of anno-sets (new construction and remodel), have not fully implemented plan views on my own work (been doing to much for others) I keep two raised ranch plan templates (left and right) since I see so many of those. Splits, walk outs I'll grab an old file and copy edit area if it will be easy enough to adjust. I have samples of a few larger kitchen/remodel projects in 11-17 on my website- Drawing samples. They're ok (meh)- appliance cuts were removed, several were composited together (in a hurry) from drawings that were handed in over time (bit of a hodge podge if you ask me) a few would have been better as Arch D but work flow got in the way. One of these days I'll fix up the website, samples and photos (it's on the list-ha).

Like Cheryl said- you can have BOTH - (to framing for the electrician, to rock for the cabinet installer) in different views with a click. If you're going to demo do it with X10- for cabinets there have been leaps starting with X8. FWIW I started with 2020 at V5 something and dropped it after V9, had started checking Chief out around V7 or 8 (not the X series) and switched at X3. One of the big reasons I switched was control of dimensions, notes and schedules. I'm doing a (free) webinar in July if you want to stop in. It's going to cover how to most efficiently get a cabinet schedule in Chief that you can export for pricing but to show that some other useful things will be covered (though I'm not going to cover dimensions or layouts). You will get a sense of what is possible from it, guaranteed. Info on the webinar and how to sign up is listed here

how-to - cabinet ordering & pricing in Chief Architect
MarkMc replied to MarkMc's topic in General Q & A
Thanks for the plug Perry, you're always welcome to attend (along with any of the usual suspects). I'm not too concerned about it filling up with KDs, and the limit is arbitrary, I'm allowed many more.Email me (markmc at the domain listed in my sig) and I'll send along an invite, meeting is scheduled so I sending them off as they come in. -
Scott Harris suggested that to start this thread, in light of the upcoming webinar I'm doing - to "also spark a how-to pricing conversation" I'll incorporate anything relevant from this into the webinar. So-Cabinet dealers/ kitchen designers, using Chief, how are you doing pricing? What problems are you running into? What do you find lacking in Chief ? (aside from an actual price catalog which I don't expect to happen) For myself- been using Chief since X3. At first I would redo in 2020 to get pricing (usually just with an item list). But for a very long time I've carried brands that don't support that or Chief. Eventually I found a way to get some of the needed informatin into a schedule in Chief and get it out. I've used Chief schedules combined with either online ordeing system or a spreadsheet template (depending on brand) for every job for about 5or 6 years now. For along time it was kludgy. Since the advent of the OIP in X9 things got manageable, the additons to the OIP in X10 were a huge leap. I combine cabinets saved to a library folder per mfg, default settings, some cabinet hacks turning miscelaneous items into cabinet doors, and using "schedule freindly" items to add things like moldings to the schedule..

Web Meeting-Using Chief to get to a cabinet order.
MarkMc replied to MarkMc's topic in General Q & A
Send an email so I can send an invite. markmc at markjamesandco.com -
The exterior layer material Enduit Talouche comes up as missing on my machine which may just be because I don't have it BUT replacing in the wall definition with even a simple color solves the problem

If Ray Tracing I'd bump the processor , for PBR that may not be needed. If meant to be a primary (run all day) machine I'd want to check reviews on heat and throttling.

Going to have a web meeting (free, using Zoom.us) July 11th at 2 pm Eastern Time ends at 4 pm Eastern, limit 25 attendees. Will be recorded (if I don’t muck that up). If interested get in touch - markmc at markjamesandco.com Please include: what you do (KD, dealer, builder, etc) anything in particular you are interested in (no promises but I’ll see if I can make adjustments) how long you’ve used Chief, current version and what you used before if anything. This is open to all but keep in mind it’s meant for kitchen designers and others who need to create a cabinet order or develop pricing working in Chief Architect (call it a 2020 refugee camp In general- creating a schedule with all the information needed generate an order in a spreadsheet template of using an online ordering system. It’s based on part of the system I’ve used with Chief for the last few years as a kitchen designer/dealer updated for X10 (70% of it will work in X9-time to upgrade) The general idea at this point it: Basic cabinet configuration Using the OIP for mods and accessories Defaults-basic face configuration, OIP for defaults, few quirks & gotchas in the default settings More cabinet configurations, saving to library, library management for brands and projects and defaults Q&A-roundtable Quick design sample using hotkeys and replace from library Adjusting the modifications per item Getting non-cabinet items into the schedule -moldings, millwork, corbels, etc. Q&A-roundtable Schedule and Export Schedule set up, multiple schedules Checking the schedule against intent Exporting the schedule, adjusting the spreadsheet tricks to speed pricing, using pdf catalog for lookup, in a spreadsheet template, checking (brief) Using an online system (the only online order system I currently have access to is a complete custom brand I’m going to use a portion of a recording I made in the past for this but may reach out to someone to work in that part) Q & A IF time allows I can touch on creating detail drawing for the manufacturer, checking the details against the print. Current attendees not all are forum regulars- CharlesVolz, Cheryl_C_Crane, scottharris, Susan Durling, Andrew, GerryT, Paul Machado (maybe on vacation), Robert Zebrowski, a few folks from QCCI (on a single feed), Tim_Houston, Johnny

If I understand correctly-you want a view with callouts and other views to have labels? Is this what you're after? If that is it I got this from someone on here recently (think it was Alaskan Son?) Add callout manually with %schedule_number% for the callout label, add a text line with arrow sete to auto-position head and tail. Once you have them in place you can change the line style for the layer to the blank.

Sorry about missing you need X8 and not 9 My solution back then was to set default cabinets to have 0" counters so schedules read the correct height. I always use custom countertops so that was not really an issue, just need to keep one somewhere set to thickness and height you need with the height and thickness set (NOT set from cabinet). I still use custom counters for my finals since I find them more manageable for my needs (like getting a countertop drawing).

Eric is correct and they gave it to us in X9-no need for a macro.

Getting selection of items on locked and hidden layer
MarkMc replied to MarkMc's topic in General Q & A
Well I was mistaken again (besides I've been using the ALDO to change things since it existed without issue) I'm getting this problem all over, nothing works for more than a blink of an eye. I'm slammed until tomorrow, (this does not help) then will document, call support and pretty sure I'm going to roll back to the last release. I have not let WIN update in weeks so it ain't that. -
Getting selection of items on locked and hidden layer
MarkMc replied to MarkMc's topic in General Q & A
I was mistaken, saving the plan view does nothing. Opening and closing the layer display options makes the setting take. Apparently the ALDO is useless for locking- it shows locked, and hidden (and it is hidden) just selectable? -
Getting selection of items on locked and hidden layer
MarkMc replied to MarkMc's topic in General Q & A
Along those lines, just ran into it in another plan. It appears to me to be- I have a saved plan view and associated layerset etc. If I make changes to the layerset they don't "take", IOW locked and/or hidden items can still be selected. However if I go ahead and save the save plan view then the locked and hidden items are no longer selected. Note that I'm generally locking and hiding using the ALDO. I don't remember this happening when just using annosets and I don't think it ought to work like this. Very confusing. -
You want the Object Information Tab, then type in comments and such there. The OIP fields made available in X9 are much easier than dealing with the components dialog. Attached is a plan with a partition made from a cabinet- it will then show up in the schedule. Moldings are a nogo I've used assorted work arounds for that and have posted on those in the past in tips and or symbols (memory fails). I need to order molding with the cabinets so this has been a BIG DEAL for me (Chief?) AND I only use molding lines for cabinet molding. How I'm doing them lately is with cabinets as follows: set to dimensions of molding; no fill; 0" separation, 0" reveal, materialis "Opening (no material)", set on their own layer, layer line style is blank (scroll down to the gap in the line list), line color white, label is whatever I need, finally I set it to be somewhere in the floor structure. (careful if you have to modify floor framing though). I keep an assortment in the library in a folder just for "schedule items". You can either type in a quantity to one of the OIP fields OR append qty to label OR copy and paste in place to get the quantity. Nice to know what version and such- add that to your signature so you don't have to keep being bothered. Makes it easier to help and troubleshoot-couple of the regulars post instructions on what and how to do it (Chopsaw ? Solver? Kbird?...) but they're all more tolerant than me I'm of the RTD school. Pretty sure there is a listing in the sticky for the forum by Dan too. Partition.plan

What version are you using? It's a good idea to include that and some computer information in your signature. are you using Chief Architect? or one of the Home Designer products? I ask because fillers have been included in schedules in Chief since I've used it (X3). Partitions were added in X10. I used to (and often still do) make partitions from cabinets and then keep them in the user library. Since I have a different approach to fillers I make those too but ..attached are screen shots from X10 -fillers, partitions, and comments in doors.

Getting selection of items on locked and hidden layer
MarkMc replied to MarkMc's topic in General Q & A
Haven't seen that, will keep an eye out. I moved it all to a new plan using edit area, import defaults and layersets (and setting the floors heights). Not so bad since it's a small plan (that I did not start). That appears to have solved the issue...maybe Wonder if it was started from a legacy template or something, had odd plan views in it. (I hate it when they start a plan more when they ask for a hurry up). I'll check with the client when I can get hold of her. -
Getting selection of items on locked and hidden layer
MarkMc replied to MarkMc's topic in General Q & A
Yes I created it, not sure but think it was created on that layer. In any case ALL cad layers are hidden, I checked all layers I made just on the off chance. All portions of the block are on the same layer as the block. Rebooted, still able to select in all but one plan view. Still can select it. Played with layers, closed chief without saving, reopened and can't select it. BUT now I can select Room with that layer locked? Not sure what you mean, by stuck? some oddities been going on. -
Did I change a setting that I don't know about? I've had occasional times when selecting items I get something from a hidden layer (which I don't think should happen) but now I'm also getting this architectural block-layer is locked and hidden, arch block layers are also locked and hidden. Is this normal? any ideas? TIA

I've run into this with Chief and also with LibreOffice. I have the impression that it happens more often when copying from one monitor to another but that may be hogwash. Anyway, I got hold of a little script to clear the clipboard which usually works, though sometimes saving helps, or both save then clear-finally copy and paste. Made a shortcut on the desktop, placed this in Target %windir%\System32\cmd.exe /c echo off | clip Run in %windir% Then set a shortcut key for it. Added- the shortcut key doesn't work until you reboot. Not much happens on the screen, slight lag, then a little blip on one side.

Chopsaw recorded the meeting listed near bottom here. As to GTM- I've been asked before, done a couple of individual training sessions, and thought about putting something together. I'm considering doing a series of four or five 2 hr meetings (free-donations welcomed) on the system I've settled on with Chief. I'll post something in offering services later this week (bit slammed right now) when I get it a bit sorted out.
