  1. Yep, my method is different for remodels, I measure to the 1/16" and model to the 1/16" but I only model the work area enough that I can show the client the changes needed for the remodel this allows the client to see the alternatives sooner and we can plan with ideas as needed until the final decision are made then I clone the remodel plan and name it as the as-built model then I strip out the changes and finish the entire as-built down to the level of detail needed this gives the standard two plans and a layout that uses both but I prefer working on the changes first Lew
  2. Doug: yes, if I "struggle" thru a task I will often go to the prior backup and do it over again that is the time I bill the client a few times I have lost my changes and zip thru them the 2nd time Lew
  3. Michael: thanks, heading out the door will try later tonight Lew
  4. Mark: that sorta works except now I have to remember to turn on the "room label - MEP" layer for all the other layersets is there a way to make that new layer on by default for all the other layersets ? all of this will matter when sending various views to layout the "closet" room label only needs to be off for the MEP view(s) Lew
  5. I would like to suppress the room label for one closet while using the MEP layerset I know I can turn off the room label but I would like to show for all other layersets right now it is all or nothing for displaying room labels I am moving my water heater from the crawlspace to the stairwell closet and want to detail it out for the plumber and the room label is in the way I have it off now, but it would be more convenient if there was a way to control this via layersets asking in case I am missing an option or method to control this not a big deal if there isn't Lew
  6. most clients don't like to see clear windows very distracting to be viewing renders or rays and seem "junk" inside set the windows to opaque or assign a dull gray to the glass Lew
  7. Yep, two symbols is the way I would do it three plans needed - one for house, one for barn, one for terrain create house and barn as 3D symbols using MENU - TOOLS - SYMBOL - CREATE SYMBOL strip house and barn to minimum via layers first - then create 3D view using "Persepective Full Overview" camera save symbols in the library place the symbols as needed in the terrain plan while some users prefer later to have everything in one plan I prefer keeping the separate plans - gives freedom for doing roofs without affecting the other building and framing and .... Lew
  8. Hi: welcome it would be best if you could post the actual plan if you have it started in Chief many users on the forum love to tweak the plans and send then back Lew
  9. David: I don't see anyone "carping" about Chief I see suggestions for what these particular users need If CA doesn't hear from them then how can they plan for the future CA has the right to ignore those requests - but they should at least listen to them Lew
  10. John: welcome it would help if the subject of your post reflected the topic Lew
  11. You're talking about downloading, not updating Mark: yes, I said downloading and so did OP (OP also mentioned updating) nope, too burned out to do programming anymore - 30+ years was enough Lew
  12. Hi: Chief has BIM as it has intelligent objects what Chief is lacking is the ability to communicate and share with other BIM apps via inter-operability Sketchup at $695 has this capability but Chief at $2795 doesn't I have been requesting FULL BIM for over a decade but CA has indicated they have little interest in going that route Lew
  13. While on the subject it would be GREAT if we could have a folder structure just like CA uses on their website I have been asking since X4 and was told it was a great idea and yet we still don't have it Lew
  14. Mark: If CA adds a new library it is NOT downloaded to Chief you have to manually download it try that for every library that you don't have and it becomes a real PITA Lew
  15. Michael: I use to have numerous private collections of symbols and cad details - count was 30K+ around X4 I had every Chief library downloaded but with X5 I got tired of trying to keep up the one-by-one downloads were a real PITA plus I was retiring - so I dumped my entire library and have been going with the minimum CA installes with each release I am now in the process of trying to download EVERY X9 library since we have made the decision to stay with X9 since X10 and future versions won't have a hardware lock a bulk downloader would be VERY nice to have Lew
  16. Mark: that only works for libs that have already been downloaded it won't download the rest at all currently each "new" lib has to be selected then downloaded and installed one by one - a real PITA we need a bulk downloader Lew
  17. George: you can also create a 3D symbol of the barn and store it in the library then add the symbol to the other plan and place as needed I prefer this method as it allows for independence of the roof etc Lew
  18. since the Viewer is a 120mb download.... Mick: the viewer can do a lot more than just convert plans it has most of Chief's camera and rendering features and dimensioning and markup tools and much much more Lew
  19. that is a very very old set of cad details I bought them when I bought ver 10 back in 2005 don't remember who sold them - but I think they are long gone I'm not near my set now so I can't look at them send me a private message and I will be home in a few weeks and can let you know if I still have them for Chief along with a few other library collections that I bought back then Lew
  20. We already have a standalone product that will convert these old plans. It's called the X8 Client Viewer and it should still be available at little or no cost. Dermot: that is great news I will spread the news as other users run into the issue Lew
  21. I have a copy of the X8 viewer. Can I legitimately also include that with the sale and transfer? Mark: I don't see why not, its free to anyone - anytime Lew
  22. CentexBS: try Ebay, older copier of Chief are sold there and most are covered by EBay's buyer guarantee before purchase verify with CA that it is a valid X4 - X8 license (skip X3 and earlier) and what the license transfer fee will be - it can range from $50 for primary license to $400+ for secondary license or student you can setup a search in Ebay and get an email whenever a new auction starts Lew
  23. Dermot: would it be that hard to extract the routine from X8 that imports the older plans and make it available as a standalone product ? as a former programmer I doubt if it is that big a deal Lew
  24. Chief: can have 99 floors go to floor 2 and try the add a new floor you can also create floors manually by selecting the next floor then draw manually best to use the floor reference tool so you can see what the prior floor looked like if trying to mimic you can also use edit area to select a floor plan then to desired floor and then paste using hold position lots of ways to create another floor Lew
  25. could you share one of your set of plans that would help everyone understand what you are doing you could zip all plans and layouts in one file to post here it sounds like you are missing many of the benefits that Chief has to offer which version of Chief are you using ? Lew
