  2. HD PRO users can benefit from following Chieftalk since PRO has manual roofs, framing, cabinets and many other tools/features PRO is a mini-me version of Chief Lew
  3. Mark: ok, thanks not familiar with the OIP need to check it out sometime Lew
  4. Since the advent of the OIP in X9 things got manageable, the additons to the OIP in X10 were a huge leap. Mark: what is OIP ? Lew
  5. Christopher: Here's one we used 1318_RISER_DIAGRAMS.zip
  6. My "guess" as far as modeling goes MIGHT be to create each module in a separate plan then save each section as a symbol in the library then have a Master Moving plan that places the sections as they would need to be moved then have a Master Build Plan that places the sections as they would need to be built not saying this is THE way to do it - but maybe A way ? Lew
  7. try Dan Baumann at www.chiefexperts.com Lew
  8. Converting to a PDF and then printing elsewhere does not seem like the ideal long-term solution Connor: It is what "everybody" does Using PDF's has many, many advantages Lew
  9. The general recommendation is to print to PDF first this skips most driver issues creates a file that can be archived or emailed to client or print shop many other benefits Lew
  10. Chopsaw: I don't think file locking works that way you have to close the file(s) to send them and that terminates the file locking Lew
  11. you will probably have to discuss with CA's tech support Lew
  12. Ummm, just curious are any of them load bearing walls ??? Lew
  13. Charlie: download the free X8 Client viewer - it can read the old files and convert them to the .plan files X8 is the last version that can read the old file format Lew
  14. I will add that it would be nice to be able "lock" a wall or a room or a floor or an area (say a wing) then if Chief decides your current action is going to have an effect on the locked area it should issue a warning if you choose to be warned via preferences but for Chief to just "do its thing" without warning can cause real problems if it goes unnoticed been requesting "locks" for over a decade and will continue to do so .... Lew
  15. use linkedin join associations like AIA and NARI for networking create a website we are not architects and it is illegal to claim to be one one every webpage we stated "Software used is Chief Architect" that way the SEO (search engine optimization) for google etc will find you when the client searches for "architect" when interviewing the client if they needed an architect I would refer them to some that I met at AIA and NARI or made it clear we were designers started out part-time in 2006, our first full year was 2007, we had 13 clients, 18 projects, won an historical merit award via NARI and made $56,000 then 2008 hit Lew
  16. my primary working area was DC metro which included DC and MD and VA I lived in VA while I visited client in each of the locales and worked with builders from each of the locales we were sub-contractors paid via 1099 we are not architects, just designers - the builders signed and submitted the permit sets my office (home) was in VA and I paid VA taxes and Fed taxes my partner lived in NY and I paid him and he paid NY and Fed taxes Lew
  17. would having separate plans files all derived from the original help while using edit area - paste hold position open an alternative plan use edit area on the kitchen then paste hold position in the "primary" plan ??? Lew
  18. Mark: I have opened a second instance of Chief during client presentations this allows me to keep my primary current views on the first instance while using the second instance for exploring options and views and a second layout etc NOTE: best to use a copy of the plan as making edits in both instances could end up corrupting the plan or don't make any edits - just use for static viewing only while discussing options as many instances of Chief can be opened by using ctrl-c when clicking on Chief's desktop icon Lew
  19. Chief's software lock needs to connect with the "mothership" every few weeks or it stops working this is why my partner and I have always preferred the hardware locks unfortunately, starting with ver X10 CA is no longer offering hardware locks you will need to get an internet connection soonest you can try contacting CA's customer service and they may have better advice ??? good luck Lew
  20. Hi: it sounds like you have HD PRO 2017 I think you can import .skp symbols look at MENU - FILE - IMPORT to verify the types of files that can be used Note: while HD PRO users can benefit from following the Chief Talk forum since PRO has many manual tools etc there is a forum dedicated to HD users called Home Talk use MENU - HELP to find it Lew
  21. it is also best to post separate questions with the topic in the subject line helps keep the replies straight and others can decide if they want to open the post and see if they can help etc Lew
  22. best to always cover this in ALL your contracts don't wait for a client to raise the issue and then get mad etc most of the time we worked for the builder(s) so the rights to the plan remained with the builder(s) we were just the "drafters" putting the model and permit set together at their direction Lew
  23. try this thread for how to change all the dims globally to show fractions or not show fractions Lew
  24. maybe buy X8 32-bit from a user that no longer wants to use Chief or from Ebay - setup a search and you will get an email whenever an auction/sale starts I suspect X8 would still be rather pricey ? If you have an X8 license maybe CA's tech support can provide the 32-bit version ? Lew
