I am having a heck of a time getting started...Need help!
Kelly_K replied to JECORMIER's topic in General Q & A
So if I were to refer to you as a simpleton, or an imbecile, or a moron, and pass it off as a product of my acerbic wit that would elicit laughter on your part. You are right name calling is funny. Now truthfully, what is your emotional response when you read those other synonyms for Knucklehead directed at you. I’ll bet you want to write back and say something nasty to me, and actually I kind of deserve it. -

You know I agree with the sentiment, and I get the trying to prevail upon JECORMIER the privilege (that he/she is likely unaware of) offered by Glenn. But the exhorting seems a bit too indelicate. I guess it is the descriptor 'knucklehead' that is the problem; the synonyms that I can think of, like numbskull, or bonehead, or even pinhead, seem even worse. Perhaps dunderhead would work since it has an Aussie sound. Maybe better yet, just use an emotional appeal like 'you would be foolish to pass up the offer.' Scott the poster is new and he may not understand your twisted wit, and sincerity. -
Nope, but would be a nice feature to have.

This is correct, and what I do when I need to open a second layout.

I just hooked up a dell uhd 32" (up3216Q) monitor and a 43" uhd tv this week. The idea with the 32" was to get the library & aldo on either side of my drawing port, onto one monitor. The tv is for template plans, views & presentations. Happy with the monitor not so much with the tv (Samsung). I replaced an older Visio that had a dvi connection that performed much better. I was able to get a couple hundred dollars off with dells' match price program - but I am embarrassed to admit to what I paid.

Not quite right - it is all editable under roof truss specification, as well as working with truss profiles in cross section. I see David has answered with how to do it. If you would like further tedium you can move the framing parts of a truss around as well; just be sure to do it at the end of the job, since you can lose your work with any new truss change you may make. As to spans and centering it is wide open depending upon depth of truss roof decking and materials, communicate those parameters with your truss company or a qualified engineer.

It is a nuisance to be sure, one needs to just be diligent about turning off the tracker when not needed. Typically, I close the model; if I wish to copy from it - I have added the stop button to a toolbar to help remind me to turn off the tracker.

A custom toolbar for your electrical symbols is the only way to go. The only downside is you get to rebuild it with each new version. There are ways to retain it, but it is not recommended by chief.

cycle through recently used electrical components
Kelly_K replied to DianeP's topic in General Q & A
Adjusting to mouse wasn't too difficult, it was memorizing the tool locations on the mouse. I just kept a cheat sheet in front of me until it became rote. -

Geez, I hate to sound like a broken record about multi-button mice, but thru button mapping I have taken a lot of the pain out of wiring a home. (with the exception of the wild connect arcs) Just like Alan I have created hot keys, assigned to my mouse - see the attached picture. Unlike Alan I needlessly complicated the hot key combination - the final letter points to the function like c - for connect, t - for 220 o - for outlet, etc. I also include 1 for break which I occasionally use to tame the arcs. -
For me speed comes from using hotkeys tied to multi-button mice. I can open dbx's without moving the cursor. Enter numbers with my right hand never leaving the mouse. My left hand mouse has side buttons that I have turned into copy/paste, but perhaps - oddly enough - my biggest time saver was mapping delete and back space to my right hand middle ( tilt-scroll) button. Left, and down for delete - right for backspace
-
A problem I have with rich text is you have to dig thru the dbx to turn on an arrow, and when you do it comes in unattached. Unless this was fixed with X8 ( I will say once the arrow is attached it behaves better than the one accompanying regular text). Most of my template text dates to 9.5 which frankly I think performs better with arrows connected than the X series of text.

Stephen, I took a moment and looked up your mouse. You appear to have found a pretty darned good deal, bordering on incredible if it comes with on board memory. If I have one complaint about the g600 is that it gets a little uncomfortable after a long day, mainly because it lacks a thumb rest. (yours has it) The only thing that was unclear from what I read is if the scroll wheel tilted right and left and is programmable. I currently have mine set to delete, delete, and backspace. Also I cycle through 3 modes (profiles), with one mapped to electrical tools. The downside is that I occasionally have an extra button click to move past the electrical mode. Hopefully, you have cleaner path to move between profiles than Logitech's mode switch. If not you may want to be careful about loading up too many tools (hotkeys).

Truss labels change when opeing a V7 file in V8
Kelly_K replied to BlackDiamond's topic in General Q & A
Yes starting with truss 0 always drove me nuts. I would create a throwaway floor truss to overcome the count problem. With X8 we gained a schedule for the trusses, but at cost of complication in no longer being able to work within the truss details window as we could prior to X8 (which I would like back). Once I got past my inertia for change, I have grudgingly moved on. I bring a lot of older plans forward and haven't noticed the numbering change - then again I haven't been looking for that. I will now, thanks for pointing it out. -
I use a g600 and a g900 both Logitech. Unlike David I don't like to keep it simple. I use both mice simultaneously and now have 8 modes with well over 100 buttons that can be mapped to hotkeys. Takes a bit to get used to; once done - tools are right at your fingertips, cursor movements & the need to open Dbx's are reduced. The only caveat is to this equipment is it is a little pricey, but if your time counts for anything, payback is quick.

Ha, couldn't have said it better. Producing terrains for me is akin to getting up and flushing a $20 down the toilet every ten minutes. I seldom need them for the con docs I produce. It is easy enough to list elevation data at property pins and foundation when needed. That said, I would do more if better tools were available such as a 3d graphical interface where I could push/pull surfaces.

Dashed Foundation Walls Not Displaying In Layouts
Kelly_K replied to CARMELHILL's topic in General Q & A
Now why is this the first time I am hearing this? Perhaps it because I don't take the time to master my craft, as Perry does. I appreciate that he is willing to pass on the information to slackers such as myself. Thanks, Perry -
Issues that I am having are updating saved camera views with color - getting scrambled to the point of replacement; looks similar to what others have posted. The truss details/elevation text is no longer scalable, such as it has been in the past. My old Logitech setpoint mouse driver gets overwritten (in that I lose my button mapping) when I run startup as administrator. None of these issues have precluded any desire on my part to use X8. I find it to be one of the better releases.

Looks like an invisible wall intersecting, my best guess.

I haven't had many come close to 200 hrs., over 100hrs quite a few. Just for chuckles, I took a peek at the time into a project I just finished that was 3 floors, with a garage under a garage, 5300 sq.ft. It came in just under 171 hrs.
-
Now there's a tool I could get behind, cheer for, and now desire. All off set - works well enough, but I always seem to leave stuff behind that needs to be turned off, and I acknowledge - I have too many layers which can make the search to turn on a desired layer a bit cumbersome..

Yes, and it doesn't work, if it hasn't been report consider it so now.

I don't wish to rain, or sprinkle, on this parade of positive press for win 10, well maybe a slight mist. I can't quite put my finger on the problems that I have had, nothing has been egregious enough to warrant my uninstalling of 10. However, I am going to wait on my win 7 laptop for now. The trouble I've had have been more annoying than problematic. For example, just like Andy, Chrome didn't work well to the point that I ended up uninstalling it, guess I kind of replaced it with edge. I've had problems with apps failing to launch including Chief. The strangest reaction has been the inability to start the task manager at times. There have been other issues - just nothing worth enumerating at this point. All in all I like interface of Win 10, especially compared to 8 but so far 8 worked better for me, I just would like the nuisance's eliminated.

Agreed, this has become pretty annoying. The 'ceiling values' message has been around, but it seems exceptionally pernicious under X7. For me as I advance a job, ceiling heights, floor heights tend to be in flux until a final design is agreed upon. So it is a forgone conclusion dimension mistakes between floors are going to occur. The clean-up has become considerably tedious. I have identified attic rooms on a second floor tend to create the most trouble, as this thread indicates. Moreover, even if one sets all the parameters correctly for all floors - those errant dimensions tend to hang around under the structure tab even if the model registers and draws correctly.
