Looking for architect for Calabasas, CA house
Joe_Carrick replied to steel_3d's topic in Seeking Services
I'm in San Marcos - North San Diego County, only about 1-1/4 hour from Calabasas. Send me a PM and we can discuss this. -
Yes

Actually, if you copy the Chief Column to your user Library you can set Stretch Planes there. You can change any other aspects as well.

Nvidia doesn’t include a similar feature in their graphics drivers, but the Nvidia desktop GPU and driver pipeline does actually include a ‘hidden feature’ that works in a very similar way. A tool called ‘novideo_srgb’ can be downloaded here and is discussed in this Reddit thread. Download the latest ‘release.zip’ file and extract the contents to a destination of your choice. Run ‘novideo_srgb.exe’ (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may flag this as an unrecognised file initially) and click the ‘Clamped’ checkbox. The same EDID data read by the AMD alternative is used and the resulting gamut is extremely similar. The corrections apply universally, including to full screen games and other applications and should apply until you re-open the tool and remove the clamp.

Chief Academy 2022 - August 31-September 2 in Coeur d'Alene

Carrie had already signed me up for the Advanced II Level so it will be a good session. We will have a great time. -
I got this from Larry Hawes in one of the other forums. I thought it might be useful information for anyone having troubles with the Colors on some displays when using RTX GPUs. Basically, the color saturation can be way off the charts when using the RTRT on certain monitors. In my case I am using a 55" 4K TV as my main display with an NVidea RTX 2060. Whenever I selected to use a RTRT the color saturation was too strong and so I reverted to Standard rendering and a CPU Ray Trace. It really made me wonder why I spent all that money for a relatively expensive GPU. After reading the attached article I downloaded and installed the suggested fix for the NVidea GPU. Now my RTRT looks a lot better. I sincerely hope this helps anyone who is having similar problems. https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/m15-R5-QHD-screen-is-oversaturated-and-too-vibrant/td-p/7900509 Thank you Larry.

Thanks Larry, I applied the "nocolor" NVidea fix for my 55" 4K TV and it worked. I had no idea that the GPU was the cause of the super saturation of the color.

Pony Wall Configurations stored in Library
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in General Q & A
Maybe, but for now I'm just posting it here as "General Info". I'm also finding that some saved walls don't always come into a plan with their saved materials. Actually, I find that this is only true when there's a "Room Style Pallet" that has a defined Wall Material. In that case the upper and lower wall finishes are assigned the Room Wall Material instead of there own materials. That's a bug which I will report.- 1 reply

I have some Pony Wall Configurations that I've added to the Library. However, Chief doesn't properly store the "Height above Floor" of the Lower Wall. So when one of these is added to a plan they are not the same as when they were created. I've reported this via customer support and the problem was confirmed. For now, I've opened the Library Object(s) and set the "Height above Floor" of the Lower Wall. This eliminated the problem so if anyone is having this trouble with saved Pony Walls, that's how to fix it. It's really a bug that CA should fix. Pony Walls saved in the Library need to match what was created.

Some of my clients want to be billed on a hourly basis. That makes it more difficult. I would really prefer to bill on a flat fee + changes basis with each phase of the project being a fixed amount. Unfortunately with hourly billing that's much more difficult.

Is it possible to create a new symbol to act as a cabinet....
Joe_Carrick replied to amydiane21's topic in General Q & A
Note that I use this method for vanity cabinets where I want them to be a couple inches clear of the side walls but I don't want the fillers. These are generally configured with a clear space underneath and legs. In some cases they have a toe-kick with a custom foot. IAE, they are more like furniture than built-in cabinets. -
It would actually be nice if the %room.name% macro could be used in naming the view in the Project Browser. If that worked then %automatic_label% could be used in the Layout Box Callout Label. This is I believe a level of macro referencing that CA has intentionally prevented. There was another case I had reported that was similar and I was told it would be looked into - but no promises.

Joe_Carrick replied to amydiane21's topic in General Q & A
Yes, it will prevent any automatic fillers - even those already present. If you want to prevent the automatic filler then you need to use the "Architectural Block" on an individual cabinet basis. You can of course add such blocks to the Library so they will be available for use whenever you want them. -

If you create and "Architectural Block" of a Cabinet it will suppress the automatic fillers. I don't know of any other way to accomplish that. -
FWIW, special design elements will inevitably require extra detailing for the ConDocs. It's probably easier to add some hours there to make up for the initial design time. OTOH, I spend more time on design than on detailing.

I find that refining the exterior design sometimes takes a lot of time. Alternatives to the roof, door and window casings, etc are not the quickest things to do. In some cases I can spend a couple of days trying different things - particularly with what seem like small projects. It's even more time consuming when I have to create special symbols to accomplish a particular design element. How do you bill for this kind of thing? Do your clients think you are over-charging or are just too slow? Thanks

No

Use "Broken Arch"

Change the Camera Name in the Project Browser Use %automatic_label% in the Layout Box Label
-
The problem is the images are in the Layout, not the Plan. AFAIK, there's no "save in layout" for the images.
-
Hi Susan, You need to check where those original images were located. Then you need to set the picture boxes in X14 to either use that location or copy them to the location that X14 is using.

I've had that problem - both for side windows and for the Ruby Console. It would be nice if Chief remembered those things.

Interesting experiment of 3060 vs 3080ti
Joe_Carrick replied to VisualDandD's topic in General Q & A
Strange. I had a similar problem with the screen blanking but I determined it was the GPU overheating due to insufficient cooling. In my case the onboard fans weren't working because the power connection was loose. You should check that there's sufficient ventilation. It's also possible that the power supply you have is too small. -
There's nothing in Chief that would reliably provide the heights of walls. The problem is that some walls are not of uniform height. There are some values available that could be used to calculate the average heights. Lengths and Types are available but I'm not sure they are listed as available columns. You might have to use custom fields and columns.
