I actually have a macro that does that for Jack Studs. King Studs would be fairly easy to add. However, you must note that the code rules (table) for King Studs is limited to walls that are less than 10'. Anything more than that would require engineering calculations for wind loading.

Braced Wall Panels - Anchor Bolt Washers
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in Building Codes and Compliance
Thanks Bob. I'll add that to my boiler plate for Braced Wall Lines. -
Aligning vertical b and b siding from floor to floor?
Joe_Carrick replied to HStone's topic in General Q & A
You might also try using a WALL TYPE that has a layer of 2x1 framing on the outside. It will actually add a level of realism. -
Braced Wall Panels - Anchor Bolt Washers
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in Building Codes and Compliance
Thanks Perry. I'm pretty sure it could be circumvented by structural calcs - but not worth the time. Do you know of any sources for such square washers? I haven't been able to find them in HD or Lowes. -
Braced Wall Panels - Anchor Bolt Washers
Joe_Carrick posted a topic in Building Codes and Compliance
The IRC R602.11.1 requires 3"x3"x1/4" square washers in addition to the standard washers for anchor bolts with "Braced Wall Lines" in Seismic zones "D" This seems to be a new requirement in the 2019 IRC. Actually, I'm using the CRC (California Version of the IRC). Has anyone found an exception to this code requirement? -
Custom Note Schedule-Duplicate numbering
Joe_Carrick replied to gravattedesign's topic in General Q & A
Yep, it's always 2 separate schedules. -
Remove baseboard from one wall only on a room
Joe_Carrick replied to MonikaBarbosa's topic in General Q & A
If you just want to eliminate the baseboard but keep any other moldings you would need to create a Room Molding Polyline for that molding and then select the Edit Toolbar Icon "No Molding on Selected Edge" -

Display Order > Move to Back -or- Set Fill Transparency -
Alan, Normally I use the worst case. But if there's a substantial difference (more than 4" of depth I'll customize. Using I-Joists is a better solution than dimensional lumber for anything more than 2x8's

Assuming that you mean you saved the plan file with a new name ---- you need to open the layout file and "relink" to the new plan.

Anyway to save a portion of a plan to a library
Joe_Carrick replied to DianeP's topic in General Q & A
If you save it as a separate plan, you should be able to copy and paste it to any other plan. -
X9 is almost 5 years old. Even if you post the plan it may be difficult for anyone to diagnose.

The other possibility would have been to make sure the "main" layer was also "foundation" layer.

Without having a complete list of all equipment (with loads) as well as the number and amperage of circuits this wouldn't be possible. It could be done - but only with customized electrical symbols, etc. I find it's easier to let the Electrician or Electrical Engineer work it out. For most residential projects I just specify the appropriate panel size.

Cross Section Cameras to Create Details
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in Tips & Techniques
Don't forget to set the Default Set (Including Layer Set) for the Cross Section View. This will allow for text, dimensions, line weights, etc to be automatically controlled. In most cases I'm using a 1"=1'-0" scale, but other scales might be used for those conditions where more or less fineness is required. -
Cross Section Cameras to Create Details
Joe_Carrick replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in Tips & Techniques
Some things can be labeled by using macros ( framing cut in cross section for example ) Most other things you will need to manually label. I have some text labels with arrows in my library (simple "NOTE") that I just place and edit the text. Generally, my details are smaller and don't need as much annotation. Using Notes and a Note Schedule is another way to make it simpler when you have multiple notes on a Layout Sheet. Wall Schedules is another way to minimize the amount of annotation. BTW, with this system I am not using CAD Details - just Cross Sections clipped in both directions. It's possible to create CAD Details from these Cross Section Views to store in the Library - but then the Camera Callout automatic labeling is lost. -
Glass Doors with Lites ? You should be able to do it in the Door DBX The other option is to create Symbols for Doors and/or Panels

Here's a link to another method of creating details that I find is really nice.

I've been experimenting with Cameras to create Details that can be sent to Layout. One of the benefits is that the below the line text can be set as %page_label% so that it coordinates with wherever the detail is located in the Layout. There are a few tricks: The Section View needs to be clipped both horizontally and vertically to contain just the desired detail The Drawing Sheet of the Section View needs to be set to the appropriate size for the Layout. Generally I find that about 6x6 or 6x8 is appropriate for details. The Drawing Sheet should be set to the desired Scale. The Drawing Sheet should be centered on the Cross Section Additional CAD objects, Dimensions and Text should be added to the Cross Section. I'm still experimenting to see if I can coordinate the Detail Number with the Camera and the position on the Layout Page. Essentially, this method has the advantage of greatly reducing the amount of 2D CAD required to create a fully annotated Detail. The Details more accurately reflect the model (including foundation and framing). If the Drawing Sheet is properly sized, the details sent to layout will fit nicely in the available drawing area. If anyone has additional thoughts and/or suggestions, please post them.

I use some of their detail sheets for deck railings, shear wall panels, etc I just insert the pdf's directly into my Layouts. In fact, it's a part of my Default Layout Template.

Strategies for multiple elevations/structural options
Joe_Carrick replied to PDXChief's topic in General Q & A
Each sub-folder would be a separate 3D Model (Plans, Elevations, Sections, Schedules, CAD Details). However, I use a separate set of Detail Plans that have all the details I use. These can be sent to the Layout Files as needed. Whenever you modify one of those details, it will be updated in all Layouts where it was used. IAE, any changes (such as adding a light) made in one sub-folder would need to be made in all. This can't (or at least not normally) do that in Chief. The Elevations, Sections, Foundation & Framing Plans are a part of the 3D Model and are essentially created automatically. It is however, possible to create a CAD Detail from View and save those CAD Details. For example: Create your Plan with a Hip Style Roof. Create the Elevation Views Create CAD Details of the Elevations (CAD Detail from View tool) then change some walls to be "Gable" Create the Elevation Views Create CAD Details of the Elevations (CAD Detail from View tool) You now have 2 sets of Elevations based on the same plan. Those CAD Detail Elevations can be sent to the Layout File(s). Just be aware that there may be other differences that you might want such as door and window locations, structural framing, etc. In those cases it's better to have separate Plans that accurately reflect the entire structure. Most views in Chief are automatically updated when a change is made to the model. That's really a good thing since it keeps the Condocs synchronized. The plan file and the layout file are normally (and should be) in the same folder. Just remember that in Chief we are essentially building the 3D model with everything in it. If the layout and plan templates are predefined correctly the Condocs are just about automatic. 3D modeling of a structure is nothing like 2D CAD where no view is connected to the plan itself. I hope this helps. -
Alan, I personally hate it. Is it an as-built? SAD!!!
