  1. The X3 library system was horrible and required subscribing etc not even sure if someone can get the X3 libraries and install them now even if someone had them to share ??? Lew
  2. to what degree are Home Designer 10 and Chief Architect compatible and/or similar? Jess: I assume you mean HD 10 PRO ??? I have lost track of which HD product line was compatible with Chief X3 HD 10 sounds about right take a look at the X7 feature chart and the current HD PRO feature chart and there should be a similar "lack" of features back then also basically HD PRO sells for about 20% of what Chief Premier sells for so that should give an idea on the limit of features in PRO PRO is the only HD product to have manual roofs, and framing and cabinets etc the layout tool in PRO is very limited in features and restricted to 1 page at a time max size is 18 x 24 but using 1/8 scale can double that to 36 x 48 at a print shop for HD products to edit a plan modified by Chief Premier the edit flag must be turned on even then the HD product can't edit any features that it doesn't have it is feasible for an HD user to work with a Chief Premier user if they have the comparable version if they understand that there are limits to that cooperation Lew
  3. Michael: when I was doing it back when the software locks came out with X2 it was a multi-step PITA before leaving for the client and then reverse when getting home maybe it has improved since then ??? but that is only one reason for our preference for the hardware lock being retired I don't go to client sites anymore Lew
  4. my partner and I always buy the hardware lock when going to a clients I hated to do the activation dance and then repeat when I got home having the hardware lock also gives total independence for Chief CA could disappear and you can still run chief CA has done it yet, but I worry that someday they will shutoff the software locks for older versions if you lose the hardware lock - it is the same as losing $2500 cash if you break it or it is stolen CA may replace it for a small fee but the older locks may be out of stock after awhile call your insurance agent and get a named item business policy so pro's and con's for both software and hardware lock we chose hardware lock Lew
  5. if I remember correctly the room divider creates an "invisible wall" which has layers and thickness I think you can modify that room divider wall and copy it as a new wall type give it a layer thickness of 1/16 but the polyline solid sounds like the best solution for this situation Lew
  6. it's a one-off purchase Ben: there is the annual SSA fee to consider which is now $495 (used to be $445) while it is an optional fee it is highly recommended to stay current Lew
  7. still begs the question why no T-111 ready to use OOB when it is so popular Lew
  8. software developed in 2008 Larry: just for clarity Chief 9.5 was developed in 2004 (maybe 2003) which is when I started with Chief Lew
  9. Chief 9.5 is an antique you would probably be far better of getting the newest HD PRO for $495 and moving into "modern times" as David pointed out software is written for PC's during their time frame software and hardware moves on and it is necessary to keep up sometimes the software mandates new hardware sometimes the hardware mandates new software that's life Lew
  10. it still boils down to the complainants ability to pursue enforcement Graham: absolutely Lew
  11. Graham: Exceptions to copyrightThere are some exceptions to what copyright will protect. Copyright will not protect: Names of products Names of businesses, organizations, or groups Pseudonyms of individuals Titles of works Catchwords, catchphrases, mottoes, slogans, or short advertising expressions Listings of ingredients in recipes, labels, and formulas, however the directions can be copyrighted your example may be considered "directions" if someone posts the steps to fix a roof problem that probably can't be copyrighted I started a collection of over 24 roof types that could be done via the auto-gen while each one may not be copyrightable my collection would have been even if I had posted that collection on this forum Lew
  12. Graham: there is the "fair use doctrine" to consider for my "copying" of the text from that site that is another "issue" once you place your property into the Public Domain I think you mean to say "public arena" Public Domain is a different concept so yes, anything in the public "arena" can be distributed easily and it is up to the copyright holder to defend their copyright if I post a song or the lyrics to a song after many others have done so without protest from the copyright holder - it will be "harder" for the copyright holder to "sue" me then can do so but their claim is weakened bottom line: posting a plan in this "public arena" does NOT negate the owners copyright only the copyright owner can do so by stating "I place this in the public domain" ( or similar words) Lew
  13. https://www.plagiarismtoday.com/stopping-internet-plagiarism/your-copyrights-online/3-copyright-myths/ Copyright is created in a work once it is fixed into a tangible medium of expression. This means your novel is protected the second you hit the “save” button. it’s a good idea to include a copyright notice, but it isn’t necessary copyright in a work is created once the work is fixed into a tangible medium of expression. However, registering your work does provide you with extra protections. First, in the United States, you have to first register your work before you can sue for it. Second, you can only get statutory damages for infringements that took place either after the registration or after publication if the work was registered within three months. Without statutory damages, most copyright infringement lawsuits are a waste of resources. A work is protected by copyright the moment it is created, but if you want to enforce that copyright in a court, you need to register it. there is nothing the precludes you from enforcing your copyrights at a later date. Derivative works is a particularly messy area of copyright law and one that is still being settled. However, it is based upon whether an “ordinary observer” would find the works “substantially similar”. This is a very tricky area but it should suffice to say that simply doing your own work does not protect you from copyright infringement so long as that work is based heavily upon the work of someone else. Lew
  14. Graham: Under copyright laws that were in effect before 1978, a work that was published without copyright notice fell into the public domain. If the work did not include the word “Copyright” or a © (a “c” in a circle) and the name of the copyright owner, the work would enter the public domain. This rule was repealed; copyright notice is not required for works first published after March 1, 1989 - See more at: http://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/public-domain/welcome/#sthash.fsIHqduz.dpuf Lew
  15. once posted it is, for all intent and purposes, in the public domain Graham: sorry but this is not true if you meant to say that it can be spread and never deleted that is true but copyrighted work is copyrighted regardless of how it is published if the owner hasn't filed a copyright it is still protected just much harder to prove it is yours Lew
  16. Greg: right click on the .pl1 file and use "open with" to choose your version of Chief if there is a .PL0 file then use that as I think that file was the "master" for a plan - but maybe it was .PL1 ??? Lew
  17. Jess: you can setup a seach in Ebay for Chief X3 and you will receive an email whenever there is one available be careful you don't pay too much $2695 new license - $1695 upgrade X3 to new license = $1000 so I wouldn't pay more than $500 or so for x3 it's too bad your friend has X3 as the library system in X3 is horrible X4 was a far better version but if you need to share you will need X3 Lew
  18. Rashid: you pray that doesn't happen it can be a real PITA it would be nice if we had TOTAL layer control and could have as-built, remod, alt1, alt2 etc all in the same plan I understand that Softplan as had the "Build options" feature for many versions now but have never seen a demo of it with TOTAL layer control it would be - now you see it - now you don't Lew
  19. another choice is to use PDF995 which came on the Chief disc's back then print to PDF995 and then print to the printer Lew
  20. another method is to select the .plan file in Windows Explorer right click on the .plan file and use "open with" to choose which version of Chief to execute Lew
  21. Terry: not sure, I have X7 but never got around to installing it kinda rusty as to what/how to download contact CA's customer service Lew
  22. yes, the older version is removed from the digital locker once you download the newest version there is a message to save the older version on your PC contact CA's customer service and they may be able to provide you with it Lew
