  1. Michael: you missed the point about plansets they would all be in one .plan file just like layersets and annosets the central idea is total absolute control over what displays via layers if existing walls are on layer A and new walls on layer B then if the user tries to turn on both layers Chief would issue a warning that those layers belong to different plansets Lew
  2. ok, a little more playing and I finally figured it out the text has to be highlighted before changing size attribute Lew
  3. OK, I don't understand how to set the character height for Rich Text in the past I always used regular text with regular text there is the "character height" setting under "text style" there has to be a way to set character height for Rich Text but I can't find it I have attached a .layout where I am trying to create a master gravestone so that I can just change the name and date and create a set of gravestones for my ancestors that I can print as .jpg's and mount in frames for a family tree wall mural at my museum my friend Joe modified the gravestone .jpg via photoshop (see page 1) I suppose I could use a regular text box but he chose Rich Text and he his out of town till next week so I'm curious why Rich Text doesn't have a "character height" setting ??? (see page 2 for sample text) Lew GRAVESTONE_MASTER_160329_2215_LBX6.zip
  4. Michael: I have to disagree with your number one and two above... also, as a former programmer I "think" it could be done (notice I didn't say easily) my suggestion would be for chief to have a model space area where the model to display is totally controlled by layers that are on this would be "planset" 1 need an alternative then create "planset" 2 in another model space area there could be as many "plansets" as memory and other resources would allow at a minimum a decent PC should be able to have 4 (?) "planset" capability then the user need simply choose the "planset" to work in with the ability to change "planset" just like we change layout pages or floors now will this method work ??? only CA can answer that Lew
  5. I wonder how many of Chief's users would welcome such a feature? Larry: considering that we see this request "often" it would seem to something that Chief should offer time after time a new user comes here only to be frustrated and told "so sorry" you have to use a "workaround" - that's what we all do Lew
  6. wow, news flash I am in agreement with Joey on something Lew
  7. I think we should be open to borrow from any program that offers something that makes Chief faster and more productive to use Nicinus: I agree 1000% why not continue to make Chief better ??? otherwise, CA could have stopped long ago with the upgrades I'm sure many of us remember a decade ago when we all enthralled on how good Chief 9.5 was wow, it can do all of that .... Lew
  8. Scott: I am a collector - I want "everything" for almost a decade I saved "everything" posted to this forum I bought every collection offered by other users - my user library was hugh I even setup a website for a chief repository where other users could post items I tried staying current with CA's libraries until X5 and the due to many hassles and never knowing if I was current with "everything" I gave up I think you setting yourself up for a maintenance "nightmare" I hope it works for you - but ??? Lew
  9. measure up a rough building and then start working on ideas for the remodel immediately Nicinus: I'm with you on this method: the client (and me) want to see the possible changes "soonest" so I will model the as-built impact areas "perfectly" and then start working on the remod changes and not worry about the rest of the as-built at this time once that dust settles then I will clone the remod version with a save as for the as-built then rip out the remods and finalize the rest of the as-built then send the needed views from the two plans to the layout this method may be "backwards" but it worked for me Lew
  10. see this thread: https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?/topic/8884-living-area-tag/?hl=%2Bliving+%2Barea Lew
  11. Glenn: maybe ??? I only use one 38" monitor I found it a good way to hop around a plan - like having bookmarks etc if you can do it all in the same instance of chief - good whatever works Lew
  12. Michel: make a copy of a plan then open three instances of Chief then open the layout and start walking thru the pages then pretend the client asks a question about framing or the foundation or ??? use one of the instances to do camera views to answer the question while that is going on use the third instance to show something else at the same time presentations can wander around - especially during the early design stages when done with that question go back to the layout and start the "planned" presentation again probably a zillion ways to use at least two instances to avoid losing "place" Lew
  13. when studying a new version of chief versus an older version I would start both versions and then hop back and forth to see how a feature was changed etc Lew
  14. Michael: I would use multiple instances when doing presentations to a client that way I could show various aspects of the plan or layout without losing position on the main presentation but - NEVER - EVER - do updates while doing this - it can cause file corruption to be safe I would make a copy of the plan and use that for the presentation then throw it away afterwards Lew
  15. Graham: ok, thanks for the clarification that's was my approx. understanding Lew
  16. interesting... how long is it active on both A and B ??? Lew
  17. Chief will now be active on both Computer A & B Graham: Huh ??? did you mean installed ??? Chief can only be active on one computer at a time Lew
  18. If the buildings are attached I would do as Ray suggested If they are separated I would do as David suggested Lew
  19. if you have the hardware lock then you don't need to do the deactivate/activate dance at all Lew
  20. if getting into 3D printing etc then consider getting the HP Sprout here is one video, Youtube has more, and HP has more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7v_7keCQf0 Lew
  21. Terry: I fully agree on 3D printing and BIM\ I started scoping out 3D printing back in 2006 and was considering buying a color printer but they cost $65K and I found a shop that would do the printing for around $300 I then started scoping out marketing 3D Models to high-end clients in Old Town Alexandria and Old Georgetown but then 2008 hit and BIM ??? - I've been advocating for BIM since 2005 and I seriously doubt if CA will go down that road Lew
  22. The underwriters are going to look at your credentials and size up their risk that determines that rate Terry: when I called a few underwriters they stated that w/o a professional license they couldn't issue coverage I hope that the requirements don't become so restrictive to prevent "designers" from working Lew
  23. it is very difficult for a non licensed architect or engineer to get E&O insurance I hear it may be offered to AIBD members Lew
  24. this question comes up time and again since I started in 2005 I've had projects where I had to do 5 alternatives a very big PITA to manage all the save as versions a bigger PITA to find a mistake after the 5 clones and to have to make the same "fixes" 5 time CA needs to give TOTAL layer control so walls etc can occupy the same space showing alternatives is a major part of this business Lew
