(would love to record this transition process in a macro, which would make the transition even faster). Ben: I have been requesting a macro language with a recording feature for over a decade eventually CA gave us a lame implementation of Ruby we can only hope for the ability to record clicks to create macros someday Lew

Can I save a newer version file to an older version?
lbuttery replied to Rytikom25's topic in General Q & A
I guess thats something to put in the suggestion box. Thanks make the suggestion but don't expect it to happen Chief plans are way to complex to allow for backward compatibility Lew -
Computer upgrade feedback and suggestions
lbuttery replied to TLHomeDesigns's topic in General Q & A
1. never heard of Cyberpoweer, I prefer name brands 2. $1500 should be enough unless you have real serious requirements 3. put $$$ into things that can't be changed, go lighter on things that can be upgraded later Lew -
Can I save a newer version file to an older version?
lbuttery replied to Rytikom25's topic in General Q & A
I doubt if backward save will ever be feasible plans are way to complex Lew -
sorry, but CA would never make it retro If you have the SSA option then X9 could be free depending on your renewal date etc contact CA's customer service for details if you don't have an active SSA then get it If you are in business it is always best to stay current Lew

I can get them to work but every once in a while the side walls below the dormer get deleted by Chief (nothing that I've done) and I lose the "Room Definition". Hmmm, seems to be a need for room locks or wall locks .... Chief should issue a warning before changing a locked wall or room Lew

a file explorer search for *.plan should find every plan on the selected drive repeat for any drives you have Lew
-
or call CA's tech support for assistance try searches in file explorer using *.plan and *.layout on your various drives where it might be Lew

Problem with Different Ceiling heights in open floor plan
lbuttery replied to StudConstruction's topic in General Q & A
I advise you to drop the preconception of the room paradigm you oversee every time you open the structure dbx but as far as I know and have read Chief does think in "rooms" ??? I'm with Larry - if I am working on a room I want the changes to affect that room I shouldn't have to go to room B to make changes to room A just isn't logical or user friendly can the "correct" method be learned - sure - but it is counter-intuitive and that is guaranteed to mess with the head Lew -

Kurt: did you zip the plan first ? be sure to close the plan before zipping Lew -
Chief not working after Windows update 5/15/2017
lbuttery replied to Jason_M's topic in General Q & A
if you have an emergency then roll back the windows update otherwise, contact CA's tech support they are open now Lew -
this issue has nothing to do with 32 versus 64 to clean up their code CA left out the ability to read "antique" plans from ver 9.5 and earlier (.pl0,.pl1 etc) Chief can now only read .plan files (ver 10 and later) so if you can find a copy of ver 10 or later on EBAY it might be worth buying it I would avoid X3 and its library system sucked and requires a subscription which is no longer available Lew

Chief Architect 9.5 - Loading on my new computer
lbuttery replied to GLOBE-Res's topic in General Q & A
Software has no guarantees to run "forever" software is designed for the OS that was available at that time who knows what the future will bring do as David suggests or find an old XP computer and load 9.5 on it Lew -
that is correct - CA decided to leave out the ability to read older plans - not sure how old they allow now you will need someone with Chief X8 or earlier to convert your plan(s) if you have one or two plans I will do that for free If you have many more than place a request in the "seeking services" section If I do it I will not make any adjustments I will simply load in into X8 and save it as an X8 file no time to do more Lew

Chief Architect 9.5 - Loading on my new computer
lbuttery replied to GLOBE-Res's topic in General Q & A
If you hunt around you can find an old XP computer to run Chief 9.5 on and use the new computer for other activities Lew -
Vince: I would install X9 on the new computer to ensure you have the latest drivers etc that Chief needs for that OS then migrate the libraries and anything else you need from the old computer Lew

Rich: but that's the "point" point sized terrain regions seem counter-productive if trying to create terrain X using method A or B forcing method B to act like method A ??? Lew
-
I am terrain stupid but I'm curious about using terrain regions 2 x 2 inch seems kinda small for a "region" to have 25 "regions" seems overkill just guessing Lew

Chief has a requirement to connect to the "mother ship" about every two weeks If your PC hasn't been on the internet for awhile or chief hasn't been able to get on the internet then you may get that message if you keep getting it and you have an internet connection then contact CA's tech support this is if you are using the software lock, not sure about the hardware lock I'll find out when I fire up my desktop which hasn't been on since Jan Lew
-
I've never had a problem with doing terrain I send it to my friend and pay him to do it Lew

Portland, OR - HD PRO Setup/Default help urgently needed
lbuttery replied to Kuzara's topic in Seeking Services
HD Pro users can benefit from following Chieftalk also as PRO has manual roofs and framing and cabinets etc they just have to understand the limits of PRO and what applies and what doesn't Lew -
Sunny: when you bought X1 you should have received a CD key the dongles don't have the key they are they just to verify that you own the software and didn't get a hack from the internet etc it is illegal fro someone to sell their X1 CD key if they have upgraded to a newer version so to get an X1 CD key you would have to find someone sell their license and everything with it on ebay or elsewhere that license also needs to be transferred to you by CA and there is a fee - that fee can be $50 - $400 or more depending on if it is a primary or secondary license etc verify with CA before purchase if the license is valid or what the fee will be as for ver 10 since you have a license some kind soul could donate their key to you and it will work with your ver 10 license I donated mine a few years ago - I charged $5 for mailing again old licenses, discs, keys etc can't be sold if the license was upgraded at this point you may also want to consider buying X4 on Ebay - price should be reasonable I wouldn't buy anything older - avoid X3 - library system was wacky and required subscription which is no longer available Lew
