Is Buying A Different Program The Best Way To Draw Dormers?
lbuttery replied to EconBlueprints's topic in General Q & A
so it looks like I have lost hours of work in Layout and Plan Touchups.... Mick: this is why I don't rely on autosave I do my own "save as" frequently - sometimes every 5 minutes and certainly when I finish a task I don't want to repeat Lew -
this is one reason why I always bought the hardware lock then CA could never turn it off by changing policy this is why I am staying with X9 for all my personal family history projects I can do this because I am retired and I don't need to stay current I do have X10 and X11 and if I should need some feature(s) that X9 doesn't have I can use it for a copy of that plan or migrate just that one plan forward Lew
-
Dermot: thanks for the clarification I'm still using X9 so I can use it from there Lew
-
interesting word "deprecated" https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/deprecate Lew
-
ok, no mention of "print model" in X11 "new features" document so I guess CA doesn't announce when they remove features Lew
-
that may be a reason to keep X10 installed if anyone needs that feature X8 is needed to open the old plan format of .plo,.pl1 etc from ver 9 and earlier or the X8 client viewer if STL doesn't work for this - then I may need to keep X10 installed as I did have some plans to print foam models of the historic Buttery Elevators at the Niagara Whirlpool and the Buttery Sawmill in Niagara Falls and in Silvermine CT and Terrapin Tower at the brink of Niagara Falls Lew
-
I'm curious now which version of Chief was the last to have the "Print Model" feature ? Lew
-
try MENU - FILE - EXPORT - EXPORT 3D MODEL (STL) STL is the format 3D laser printers use in the reference manual do a search on STL another choice might be EXPORT COLLADA - which is a .dae file I have been on this forum since 2004 and the paper "Print Model" was discussed - maybe - a dozen times not a very widely used feature Lew

Open a 2nd Instance of Chief / Copying between layouts

Larry: I didn't have any issues with earlier versions of Chief maybe Chief X10's introduction of plansets makes a difference ? Lew -
Open a 2nd Instance of Chief / Copying between layouts
lbuttery replied to bdammeyer's topic in General Q & A
yep, I have no idea of having multiple layouts open will affect reference layers and plan sets I last used multiple instances for a demo with X2 I would clone each plan and layout and then work with those while using multiple instances just in case of plan/layout file corruption Lew -
Open a 2nd Instance of Chief / Copying between layouts
lbuttery replied to bdammeyer's topic in General Q & A
I just tested it and it works fine on X11 and I know it worked on earlier versions all the way back to ver 9.5 open the first instance using the desktop icon then hold the crtl and click on the desktop and the second instance will open it is possible to have a multitude of instances open at the same time I have done so when do a client demo that way I could keep position on one feature while showing another or trying something on the other(s) best to do it with a copy of the plan and delete the copy when you are done it is possible to cause plan corruption by making edits in more than one instance at the same time Lew -
Material Used in HD-Arch'16 Not Found in HD-Pro'19
lbuttery replied to RickFlack's topic in General Q & A
Rick: HD PRO users should follow this forum as well as the Hometalk forum since HD Pro has many of the manual tools that Chief Premier has just make sure your posts clarify that you use HD Pro and to remember that not everything posted here applies to HD Pro Lew -
the general recommendation is to buy the best gaming computer you can afford not sure if Mac's make gaming computers Lew
-
Hmmm, there's always room for growth CA has stated that they have a request list of fixes and features that is 4000+ long and that was stated a few years ago so I'm thinking they have quite a ways to go yet Lew
-
or try saving another plan and make note of where it is saved most likely the other plan is there also if no joy, then contact CA's tech support for assistance Lew
-
yes, create a 3D symbol of the building and place it in the Library then place that symbol in the next plan I use this method whenever I have multiple buildings each building is a separate plan then I have a Master plan with the terrain this gives me more control over the roofs and framing etc without interfering with the other buildings the top gurus can do it all in one plan but that takes skills to manage it all properly Lew

I would expect by now that we should be able to use the "edit area" tool to select an entire floor and then select "raise ceiling" and set new height to 9' behind the scenes Chief should know how to do all the steps that we need to do manually IOW - it can be done manually so why can't it be automated to happen auto-magically ? if there are 9 rooms on that floor the "edit area" marquee could be used to select 5 of those rooms and they would raise 1' and the other 4 would stay at 8' Chief knows where "everything" is already at - just do it Lew

What makes you think Chief isn't paying attention to what people are struggling with? Michael: I know CA is listening and they do follow this forum among other things but after watching this forum daily since 2004 and reading every post I can get a sense for what people struggle with I was originally trained as a teacher and when you see some/many struggling it is time to re-evaluate how you are teaching the material Instead of just saying "you too can master this" with study and practice try to find why there are "hurdles" sure you can drive down a road with potholes and with expertise you can probably learn to do it pretty fast but might it be better to pave over the potholes ? Lew

CA might be well advised to conduct a class with Chief newbies who have attended the Basic training class (so they know the fundamentals) then watch and take notes while these newbies try to replicate various situations using these tools no interference/training from the staff - nor allowing the students to help each other record what each student is doing or attempting to do then have the designers review each session to see what they are struggling with this should probably also be done with roofs and terrain and stairs (and maybe other topics) I know the experts think it is "easy" and you "just have to ..." but obviously there are issues and CA should work to address them Lew

when I first started reviewing Cad software in 2004 I was prepared to spend up to $10K I started with HD PRO so may partner and I could get our feet wet then with a sale we jumped onto Chief 9.5 for around $1800 I consider Chief to be a bargain in comparison to other cad software Lew
-
I just upgraded from X9 to 10 and I haven't noticed anything startlingly new and improved yet... Check out Plansets they are a MAJOR improvement for Chief and X11 introduces the multiple reference layer feature Lew
-
sometimes it is acceptable to get the symbol to "look good" then in the layout use a callout to point to drawings supplied by the vendor they can be .jpg or .pdf etc I did this for a Nana-wall store front system for a bar/restaurant in Buffalo Lew
-
nope, you can keep them all David Potter has then all - all the way back he also has all the Home Design products all the back he offers training services and plan help and is situated to just that for "everyone" my partner used to offer training and plan fixes and we finally settled on keeping current version and the two prior versions what you keep is up to you Lew

Real estate agent some builders buy lots on spec then find a client that wants a custom house built on that site as an agent you could help the builder find/buy lots design the house then as agent sell the house and lot to the buyer some builders will even build the house and then home to find a buyer also as an agent you can inform your clients and potential clients on your remodeling services buy this house with its "problems" and we can "fix" those "problems" by remodeling Lew -
PlanSwift is suppose to be a good companion to use with Chief CADEST used to be integrated with Chief but I think it went away ? Lew
