I opened Alan's plan, I built the framing, adjusted the thickness of exterior finish so the blocking will show and you can see by the picture what I got. Note the blocking is OUTSIDE of the wall and not stacked on top. Solution, minimize the blocking so it does not show and then edit as needed to show blocking on top of wall in lieu of outside of wall.

Alan, I am glad you brought this up. Somehow in the last 10 years I have gotten by. But it is silly that we cannot have the vertical blocking stack on top of wall and have exterior finish go up to roof sheathing. A very very common occurrence. It seems to me that on an occasion I stumbled on a solution but I did not study it and I do not know if I could replicate the solution. Glenn's method seems like we are giving something up, i.e. the blocking and a sub fascia. Recently I saw a post by Perry whereby he had a solution. Hopefully he will pipe in with his solution......... if he ever gets out of bed the darn slug.

I can have ceiling, I do need to balloon thru, I do need to have zero subfascia and I think I need zero blocking. See plan. A lot more work than it should be. alan wall to roof zero block zero sub fascia with ceiling.plan.zip

I think Perry had a different method. Maybe Perry will pipe in and explain how he does it.

This did not work for me. What do you think I am doing wrong. See attached plan BBB GLENNS SIDING TO SHEATHING PLAN 1.plan.zip

Doug, I sent it into Brian. It is uploading now, if you guys do not get it, leet me know and I will send again.

I was working on a plan. I imported a DWG file drawn in ACAD. Not a DXF but a DWG, I am not sure if it makes a difference. I am going to trace the DWG and turn it into a CA file. I noticed once I imported the DWG file, a plan save took about 20 seconds, (plan file is 10.7 MB). So I quit CA and restarted and now the saves take 2 seconds. The point is..... maybe after importing a DWG file, we must quit CA and restart and maybe it cleans out the memory. I can not explain the whys, but this worked for me.

Absolutely, I do it all the time.

This vids for you Joey...... http://youtu.be/_KvReHNcm5I

Okay, I gave you one.

Let me ask you this, why call it a garage. Why not call it a bedroom and drop down 6". IOW, what is the difference between a bedroom and a garage each dropped down 6"? Maybe the fact that the garage will not have a finish floor yet the bedroom will. Quick answer to your question, yes, what you suggested should work.

What's the difference between a floor joist and a beam?
dshall replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
I know, sounds dumb now. There is or was a point. I assume you know that joists break over a bearing beam, and are continuous over non bearing beam, so I am assuming I ran into a situation where I wanted that option for a floor joist. But I cannot think of an example now. -
Here is a vid on a method. Really good vid, worth watching. Note at beginning of vid, the drywall at ceiling is missing.... bug? Maybe. I do not know how to fix that. Essentially I added an additional floor level without messing around with aCAD's floor system. http://youtu.be/vZhtcrdMz9Q

Here is a vid showing the two methods of finding a particular plan file in layout. http://youtu.be/XkXgR3HmFqE -
A pass thru window for what at top of what?

That is the solution, I will do a vid when I have time.

Sorry about that , sometimes I am a bit dense. -
How about a wall pulled down in elevation, stick a door in it, and then build the floor platform/shelf out of a flat roof plane.
-
Yeah, how about a pony wall with the top half of wall being defined as a material that is invisible.

In your picture you have PRINT IN COLOR checked. Uncheck it. And then, go to PREFERENCES<APPEARANCE<DISPLAY<COLOR OFF IS< and check BLACK & WHITE, do not check GRAYSCALE. Let me know if this works, I am curious...... BTW, if this works, this is the Perry Solution that I learned from him a while back. That guy is pretty smart.

ain't that interesting, it works with the word "reverenced" Thanks for the help Joe. I think Glenn's solution is very very quick and easy. -

And he does it again. Thanks Glenn. -

Got it, thanks Joe, you forgot to tell me to check the EVALUATE BOX. So it took awhile to learn how to do this. But I did. It would be easier if CA set it up so us nitwits could get this information without having to learn Ruby. -

The layer linked macro I received from you..... I do not think this is what you meant to send. { "Version": 2, "UserDefinedMacro": { "Name": "layout_linked_plan_file", "Value": "begin\n owner.referenced_full_filename\nrescue\n referenced.referenced_full_filename\nend", "ShouldEval": true, "Context": "none" } } -

This thread is a perfect example of why I do videos. I have posted 9 times this morning and I still do not know how to do it. A video tends to show the method used and if there is a problem, the problem pops up. Another reason I do vids, I do not have to go back and forth answering questions on how to do something. easy peasy, it saves time for everybody.
