Suggestions on how to model these windows
Chopsaw replied to SchnieppDesign's topic in General Q & A
Mike, If I have time I will try to make up a better illustration, as with the library textures I think it is possible to achieve the level of quality you require with my original technique. The only reason that it does not look so great in the attachment above is that the material was a 96dpi screen capture and I did not take the time to refine the material. If you would like me to try a mock up on your plan please let me know. -
Here is another interesting twist on the topic that I just read, check it out: https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?/topic/8603-cad-block-template-creating-a-detail-plan-database/

Suggestions on how to model these windows
Chopsaw replied to SchnieppDesign's topic in General Q & A
I did one of these a while back and tried to make my own brick material but apparently there are some in the Mohawk library now according to this CA Tutorial : https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00797/creating-a-soldier-course.html Mike, if this looks acceptable to you I just used a screen shot of a brick from my plan. John, I started with a broken arch top window to get the correct wall opening and then put in a small polyline solid filler piece to square it up. I don't know why CA does not have this window type as it seems to be quite common and the houses of that era will likely remain with us for a long time since they were built so well. -
Why not just import as PDF or do that and trace over and put in library.

Does anyone remember what the maximum file size is for tech support as I think it tells you only after you have uploaded your file and I have forgotten. I think last time I overloaded it and lost everything and don't want to do that again. I have a 38MB zip file to send in and suspect this will not work? Is it possibly 25MB? Well I gambled and it seems to be more than 40MB and not the same as the Forum.

I would have to check to confirm but I think you have to assign the layer before blocking and then it remembers when un blocked.

There is one other thing that you may have missed in letting the railing be the railing and the wall be the wall. Define and display the railing at your specified size after you Deselect automatic width.

Scott, This would be a great workshop because I think there are a lot of users that don't understand this. I'm in. SDS, I think you can create the results you are looking for with the auto decking features by setting up a single layer railing wall type that is 12" in your case. The outer line is created by the main layer of the wall but still not sure where the inner wall line goes.

Harry, Do you mean the off white frieze board above the entrance? Everything else looks ok to me.

Ray, I was having some issues with my Dell recently and found out that you can run a complete hardware diagnostic test by pressing F12 during boot up and choosing diagnostics.

Ok I got it. Room Specification>Deck> Automatically regenerate deck framing. Thanks, Michael and Glenn.

Unless someone has an easy answer for this I would go ahead and use the Material Painter for now and send a report to tech Monday.
-
This really should be posted in General Q&A on Home Talk but it is interesting that the same issue exists in X8. David, you Jumped me as I was trying to figure out why this does not work even in X8 as you have discribed. The decking seems to be defaulted to be under "Planks, Joists (L):" in the Room Specification DBX under the Structure tab. But will not change the material in a 3D view, so what are we missing? It must be something simple.

Post some screen shots of what you have so far and maybe someone will have a few suggestions or pointers for you. It is mostly a matter of getting the contours correct and applying high quality materials to the surfaces.

Hi Vinnie, Not exactly sure of your situation but hope this helps.

First Check that CA is using your proper graphics card and your Driver is up to date. Mine is attached and you may want to attach yours to your post. If you suspect you might be overloading your Video Card you can download and monitor it with a fairly simple app: https://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2794/techpowerup-gpu-z-v1-11-0 For next time this sort of problem should be posted in General Q&A and you can also include your computer specs, Video Card specs, and CA version in your signature in Profile Settings.

Johnny, Thank you for explaining how rooms are "King" in Chief. It is refreshing to hear your perspective comparisons from your experiences in other software. Just to be clear it seems that you are saying that 1/2 walls are different from railing walls but 1/2 walls are just specially predefined railing walls with studs and drywall.

Tim, Sounds like you only missed one step, cad block your cad lines and then select the window and the tool should appear in your toolbar. Search the Help file under Custom Muntins or watch CA training video # 10048

Almost ready to send to my engineer...or not need one bit of roof help.
Chopsaw replied to Aunttieem's topic in General Q & A
Plan looks much better than last time I looked but there are still quite a few issues. Roof may be able to be fixed as Illustrated but lots of other stuff to check first. I would suggest that you increase the overhang where you have 11' walls around the back half of the building such that you can match the "fascia top Height" of the adjoining roof planes. I think that would clean things up a lot and look better. Go ahead and move the exterior wall of bedroom 2 to align with the bump out from the shower wall and it will look and build much better. You have a footing alignment issue at the right side of the front entrance. Attic wall alignment issue with gable end wall for Bill's Office.Still plenty of minor roof plane joint and alignment issues to comb over. Lots more to do before Engineering. Do You Have a Layout File Made Yet? That is when all the bugs show up and you need to examine each view needed for your CD Set to be sure everything is clean and makes sense to build. -
Emma, You could try Adobe Reader which is a free version and see if that gives you any more options. My second option shows up in the Print View options as "Microsoft print to PDF" which also worked when tested.
