Remember that you only get one terrain per plan. Which is too bad.

I understand that a layout file will look first in its own directory and then in its own sub-directories for a file of the name referenced. Only if it doesn't find it does it start looking elsewhere. So you can have multiple files named "Plan Notes.PLAN."

Create attractive 2D plans like Vectorworks?
Richard_Morrison replied to ED-209's topic in General Q & A
The big problem is that Chief doesn't have gradient fills. Vectorworks creates really wonderful 2D drawings that Chief should take note of. It's time, IMO, for Chief to focus on 2D improvements. -
If you Google "offline panorama viewer" you will get many options.

While there isn't a default, you can move the arrow to where you want it, and it will stay attached. Also, it isn't that much more work to place a text block and then place arrows.

FAR - Floor Area Ratio
Richard_Morrison replied to Joe_Carrick's topic in Building Codes and Compliance
This list misses a number of factors, e.g. How stairs are counted (some cities include each floor, some include only once) Architectural projections, such as fireplaces. Covered porches, may or may not be included depending on how many walls are open. Height of decks/exterior stairs (below X number of inches of grade, may not be counted, or counted in lot coverage but not in FAR) Ceiling height of basements relative to grade: above X number of inches above grade, may be counted. Second/third floor "equivalents," where space that is taller than "X feet" may count. This is just off the top of my head. I'm not sure that you'll be able to come up with a "one size fits all" scheme. Good luck! -
off topic - HVAC design for residential

Here's a good summary of the process: http://www.ahrinet.org/App_Content/ahri/files/Homeowners/manual D calculation.pdf Pretty tedious. -
off topic - HVAC design for residential
Richard_Morrison replied to CARMELHILL's topic in General Q & A
A few options here: http://www.acca.org/standards/approved-software Here's an option for under $20. -
You can also look at AccuTrans 3D (http://www.micromouse.ca/index.html) to convert high poly symbols to lower poly count. Free for 30 days, then $20.

Very nice use for this tool, Michael!

I had reported this issue for X9 already, and it's been logged.
-
Could it be related to this issue?
-
Brian, This is very cool. I note that there is a 99 file limit. Is this limit shared with the 3D viewer models, or are they separate limits? Are we able to get more cloud storage? If so, what does that cost?

Is Sketchfab as good as a walkthru video for your clients?
Richard_Morrison replied to GeneDavis's topic in General Q & A
Sketchfab has been "improving" itself since Dan first wrote about it. There are now a lot more environment controls and I find it hard to adjust lighting, color, and materials, so that it looks as good as it does in Chief. I used it quite a bit in the past, but I find now that the Chief 3D Viewer is available, Chief is much easier than Sketchfab. -
www.chieftutor.com had a pretty good training video on this that I used to send to my clients. Maybe it's still there...
-
I even heard back from them that they got a bunch of Chief Architect requests today, and are considering it! A high number of e-mails will help. (I also had mentioned a number of their competitors who already have products in the Library. lol)
-
Depends on who your competition is. Indian or Chinese renderers? Or maybe this? http://jopays.com/ If you do a Google search, there is a lot of information out there. Google "prices for architectural renderings". If you are considering this as a career choice, seems like it wouldn't be too much trouble to run a Google search or two.

Probably better report it to tech support.

Inserting CAD details into layout page to big
Richard_Morrison replied to capitaldesigns's topic in General Q & A
This is certainly convenient, but is a sloppy way to do this, and makes it tough to edit the detail in the future, since you won't be dealing with actual dimensions. How are you going to remember what scale you saved it at in the library? -
Inserting CAD details into layout page to big
Richard_Morrison replied to capitaldesigns's topic in General Q & A
You are drawing all of these details at "real world" scale, right? (i.e. if you put a dimension on it, it will measure the correct dimension.) When you "send" a detail to layout, whether it's coming from the plan, a CAD detail, or the library, it has to be rescaled to 1"=1'-0, or whatever scale you want the detail to be. You should not be placing details directly on the Layout; they should always be "Sent to Layout" so they are at the correct scale. It's usually easiest to do this from a CAD detail, and you can set the scale of the CAD Detail window so it's what will be sent, and it will be saved. (Under Drawing Sheet Setup) You can place a Library Detail onto a CAD Detail and then send it at the correct detail to Layout. Then you can get automatic labeling on the Layout sheet. -
There is advertising (probably a waste of money since it requires so many repetitions and is not very credible) and there is marketing (which can pay off big-time), and it's important to understand which is which. Although it is over 25 years old, this is a timeless classic (IMO) and well worth the $0.01 it will cost to get a used copy. https://www.amazon.com/Marketing-Your-Services-Step-Step/dp/0471509485

How to address privacy issues on the design
Richard_Morrison replied to Francois's topic in General Q & A
Francois intended to say "Planning" Dept.,, not "Building" Dept, I'm sure. These issues are not related to the Building Code. -

How to address privacy issues on the design
Richard_Morrison replied to Francois's topic in General Q & A
I would ask the Planning Department to show you a sample diagram of what they are looking for. Nobody here is likely to be able to tell you.
