File associations are created upon the installation of Chief Architect. On a Windows system, you can use "File Explorer" to locate, move or file your .plan or .layout files anywhere you want. Then, simply double clicking the .plan or .layout file in "File Explorer" will launch Chief Architect.

X5 has been meeting my needs. But, from what I've read on this forum, I would really love to take X5 to X10 or X11 - waiting on pricing special they sometimes have around the end of the year. -
I have skinned the PDF scale cat several ways in CA, but mostly use known horizontal or vertical distances to calculate a resize factor for the Transform / Replicate Object dialog box. I wish CA had a calibration tool like Bluebeam REVU. Just my two cents...

In X5, I can delete the Living Area Room Label, save and reopen the plan to verify the Living Area Room Label is still gone. I can then break an exterior wall to open it or just pull back a corner connection. As soon as you open up the exterior wall, the Living Area Room Label reappears.

Just my thoughts... I use McAfee and was having the same issue with X5-64-bit (see my other posts regarding this). I uninstalled X5-64-bit and installed X5-32-bit and have not had the issue since. I did talk to McAfee after seeing posts that McAfee was the issue - they say if the AV software did quarantine a file, it would be logged and not set to zero file size in it's program location. With the many occurrences while attempting to find what was causing X5-64-bit to crash, there was nothing in the McAfee logs indicating that McAfee "touched" or quarantined the DLL files. Just trying to make sense of this, I could reinstall X5-64-bit to see if it occurs again but CA X5-32-bit is working fine so far and I can get my work done.

Known issue. Not McAfee. Who knows what causes this? I uninstalled X5 64 bit and reinstalled X5 32 bit and have not had the issue again.

Just got off the phone with McAfee support. Why would McAfee set a DLL filesize to zero and stamp it with the current date/time and not notify me or log the action. Just asking....

The popup window will tell you the file name and location. See attached image. Sometimes it was a single DLL, sometimes several popups indicating different DLLs. I restored the DLL files from backup to a temp directory and when happened again, I just copied them to their location and X5 would work again until next time. This was using X5 64 bit and the issue has not occurred since I installed X5 32 bit.

I stated in my original post that the pop up message said the files were missing which was not the case. Anytime the error occurred, the DLL file or files in the pop up message was in it's place but had zero file size and a current date/time stamp. I could restore the DLL files from a backup and all was fine for a random period of time. This was the issue even after uninstalling and reinstalling X5 64-bit. Once I restored the DLL files, I could launch and exit X5 throughout the day and then it would happen. I don't know if launching or exiting X5 zeroed the file size. But, the issue has not occurred since I have uninstalled X5 64-bit and installed X5 32-bit.

PS, I have updated my signature and my current (updated again just a few days ago) is Windows 10 Pro Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.1715)

It seems that the issue I had with X5 is now showing up in X9 as well. See my post and "solution for now" from a couple of weeks ago. I haven't attempted to return to X5 64-bit because I have work to turn out and X5 32-bit has not failed to launch since I installed it. https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/15024-x5-and-windows-10-pro/

Many thanks to all who replied. Here is what I hope is a final solution to the issue. Please note that I failed to mention that my new machine in October 2016 had Windows 10 Pro x64. So when I fresh installed X5 back then, I installed the 64 bit version and the 64 bit update. X5 64 bit had been working just fine until I submitted a this recent request for help. Per your suggestions here, I did a repair install of X5 64 bit and it seemed to work for a day or so and the issue reappeared. Then I uninstalled X5 and did a fresh install of X5 64 bit. Again, it seemed to work for a short while and then the issue reappeared. I noticed that I had 32 bit X5 install files from my old XP machine so I uninstalled X5 64 bit and did a fresh install of X5 32 bit and now as of today, the issue has not appeared. Thanks again to all who replied!

Hello all. I am still using X5 as it meets all of my needs. Back in October 2016, I upgraded my system from Windows XP to Windows 10 Pro, installed X5 on the new system and all has been operating fine until just a couple of weeks ago after a recent Windows update. Not sure is that is what caused the issue or not. Now upon launching X5, a pop up error window says X5 is missing several DLL files. Looking at the location of these DLLs, they are there but with a current date/time stamp and zero file size. I restored just these DLL files from a backup and X5 works fine for a random about of time. When it quits, I restore the files again and all is fine for a time. Opened a case and CA tech support says to perform an X5 repair installation to see if that corrects the issue. I am hesitant to do so because I can have it working by restoring the DLLs from backup and I am afraid that if the repair install blows up, I am stuck. Any suggestions?

I really appreciate all of your input. I am still on X5 and XP, not upgrading my PC and CA to X6 later this year. I can' read Robert's plot.plan. Andy, I don't see your version in your profile - by chance are you still using X5? Thanks again. -
I have done only a few plot plans but I am having difficulty getting this one to close with the given data. I have tried several methods, reviewed training tutorials and forum postings. I am beginning to think the survey data is incorrect. Any ideas on what I may be doing incorrectly? Please see lot 40 in green on the plat. Thank you. Copy of FINAL GH 7_01.pdf
