  1. made a vid about it in that post 1060 v 1070 UPS and also, Googles Backup and Sync now has the capability to sync any file in any location on windows...including your ramdisk. Not to mention my ramdisk is backed up at every shut down through the ramdisk software to an .img file- so even if somehow I lost power and somehow google backup and sync was turned off I would only lose that days work I did in the User Library, nothing more. But I save the .plan files used to create symbols which is backed up to microsoft OneDrive so even those library items would be recoverable
  2. which reminds me- would love it if chief could show items like windows and doors and electrical outlets without needing the wall layer turned on
  3. Ok, totally getting it- guess the easy "work-around" is to create "plumbing off" "plumbing on" "framing off" "framing on" layer sets so that you can leave the plan loaded up 5 times and only need to switch the referenced layer set. The reason for the similar names would be to keep the toggle immediately above or below the current layer set for an easy "switch"
  4. Yeah I watched- apologies, the straight to the point answer is no, I guess what I'm wondering is why would you want to? though I will say that @Alaskan_Son had a great quote the other day, paraphrasing- something along the lines of you may be onto something, it may become relevant someday and should be considered
  5. I believe he is specifically using CA for rendering purposes and is working diligently to recoup initial investment costs. The byproduct being that he is learning a powerful software that may prove very valuable to him in the future. I know I've been in plenty of instances when I underestimate and over-promise. I personally have never read more than a paragraph of the manual and have maybe watched 6 of the videos all the while the help button has been existence forever unbeknownst to me...to each his own learning method! I am quite certain that a good number of people have learned something new from this post alone, let alone his other posts. Nearly 600 views, with at least 75 users online at any time with 2000+ users logging in daily. Roofs are challenging to new users, he posed an interesting question or two and even uncovered the little known ability of pitching a roof on a z axis via a forum responder. I only became a forum member in 2016 but have been in the software well over 10 years- sometimes it doesn't suit a personality to show humility and ask questions that may be perceived as dumb or uneducated when really he has the ability to ask and he is getting responses- and really really good ones at that! We get a " which laptop" thread almost every week- still doesn't annoy me, just makes me smile and you know what, every time I learn something new about laptops!
  6. I think Joe is pointing you in the right direction, it seems that you are trying to setup the reference set to replace saved plan views. Maybe there is a method lurking there that isn't immediately apparent to me. Something to note, reference plans will rob you of computer resources if too many are loaded in. I'm sure people will be creative in their utilization of the new reference capabilities. I use it to show a "new floor plan" plan view over an "existing floor plan" plan view, or a "braced wall plan" plan view on top of a "foundation plan" plan view, or a "new roof only" plan view over an "existing floor plan" plan view. in actuality it doesn't reference plan views, but that is how I establish my layersets-through plan views. As a remodeller my workflow is this:(over-explained for clarity) Specify my layers/line weights/colors within a layer set, specific to the type of information I wish to present in the eventual plan view I will commit...being sure to omit the information that is not relevant. Specify my anno defaults and associate with the layer set, so that when I switch to that anno set, it will switch to the associated layer set. Establish a plan view that will associate with this anno set. When I switch to the "E-PLAN" plan view, my anno set switches to "E-PLAN ANNO" which switches my layerset to "E-PLAN 1/4." go do takeoffs/as-builts and save plan view as "E-PLAN" open a new plan and switch to my "NEW FLOOR PLAN" plan view and turn on reference to the as-built plan, referencing the "E-PLAN 1/4" layerset. If I need to edit something on that layer set I just go to that plan view and select my "E-PLAN" plan view.
  7. ha nice, I need to re-install X-10, I deleted it from my RAMdisk
  8. To Rockys defense, there have been some very curt and albeit rude responses to his queries. We are all here helping him voluntarily-key word there, if you don't like his learning methods, don't read his posts...don't volunteer. A challenging student makes for a better teacher. I've already learned a trick or two in attempting to explain a method to Rocky. Rocky's challenging because he is brand new yet possesses some core understanding from a similar software. I struggled through CA, and I wish I had asked more questions- it can be extremely cumbersome going through video after video without true reference. When I get some time I'll clean up my anno sets and load some up for you Rocky so you can take a look. His posts have led to some fantastic videos on roof building methods and more...I say keep going
  9. Change your text style defaults to transparent
  10. I'm not sure that the clock speed on ram makes a huge difference, I went with 3000, makes a difference for OC With the right setup for backing up files, installing CA's core program to a ramdisk is laughably fast-like words cant describe it- makes me giggle. You should try it, honestly- its like a face slapper. NVME can't touch a Ramdisk the same way an SSD can't compare to an NVME.
  11. I would tend to agree, and not trying to be argumentative, but from real world use I just don't see that much difference between my 1070gtx and my 965m in 3d performance....and I use a ton of complex and high resolution textures. I see real world difference in other rendering software's such as Thea and Lumion FOR SURE. which is why I bought an eGPU. If I could go back in time and build the perfect laptop it would be WAY lighter than my ASUS, it would have a very high end touch screen as working with my iPad remoted into my desktop makes for a very fast workflow. It would have an affordable GFX card(since it is the first thing to become obsolete) an nvme slot or 2 with 64gb+ of ram and a 5ghz 4-8 core CPU. At least one USB-c port. I work 40-60 hours a week in CA doing production drafting and design work. For the type of work I do the Ramdisk and NVME have been hands down the biggest improvements for CA by miles. Especially with making backups, syncing cloud services...CA just does a ton of read/write...I honestly wish I had bought 64gb of ram instead of 32
  12. sometimes its nice to have the reference floor loaded in if its in a different file location so you don't need to open the file to have it available for reference. You could set the referenced floor to an "all off" layer set You could also have an "all off" plan view saved with all reference plan views so that when you open the file it pulls in all reference plans and then use Michaels suggestion
  13. at 4.4 thats stellar if you ever take a look at your resource monitor, CA almost never utilizes more than 4 cores, and typically only 1-2: installing the new X-11 will see huge benefits by placing the temp and undo folders in a ramdisk utilizing something like AMDs free utility that backs the ramdisk up- another step would be to purchase a battery backup as a failsafe. You can also increase the pagefile with enough ram if you have enough space to place the core libraries in available ramdisk as well as the user library- CA becomes screaming fast. My 5 year old laptop outperforms most desktops with the right configuring of file structures and allocation. The only time I use 28 threads is in an external rendering program which I rarely ever get contracted to use as CAs PBR has become so formidable for most cases.
  14. I have a 14 core xeon at 2.2ghz overclocked to 2.5 my quad core i-7 often times outperforms. CA doesn't really utilize the extra cores...so I would not say that a hexacore at a lower/low clock speed would give more power for the intended application. one of the largest upgrades for CA in terms of speed and usibility is a nvme drive, and a ramdisk drive, hands down
  15. Core speed is a huge factor with CA, as well as read write speed...wouldn't recommend it. I'd rather have a quad core at 3.6ghz that has an m.2 nvme drive or at least expandable/upgradable m.2
  16. also if you edit your default colors for selection line it will be more apparent to you that a row has been selected. This can be found under edit/preferences/appearance/colors/selection line
  17. "click on" is very specific, it will not select, per se, in that it wont give you a strong visual indicator that you have clicked on a row, but it will bring up that icon in your toolbar if you click on a row...assuming you are on a certain version of the Chief Architect software as solver just indicated
  18. Click on the row of the item you'd like to open and then click this button in your toolbar; The button is named "openschedulerow"
  19. POST 19 A set of stretchable picture frames. Grab an image and load it up as a material- remember to turn roughness all the way down in your material's properties tab for a realistic glass effect. Paint it over the image in the picture frame. 20. POST 18 A couple of fireplace goodies. One is a mantle assembly that I had previously uploaded in X10, this one stretches around your firebox and maintains its scaling quite well: The other, a simple distressed and polished wood mantle that I'm sure may be used for things other than just mantles. I setup the stretch planes around the notches in case you'd like to make a thick shelf: DOWNLOAD: RABS FIREPLACE MANTLES.calibz CLICK TO GO BACK TO THE INDEX!
  21. POST 17 RUGS!! a collection of 14 rug symbols / materials- largely from west elm and a few persians. DOWNLOAD: RABS RUGS 1V1.calibz CLICK TO GO BACK TO THE INDEX!
  22. Thank you, I use that scene for testing tile- love it and yes been waiting patiently. We were hoping the beta thread could be moved but the public beta has its own program versioning so I figured I should redo it.
