rockyshepheard
I'd like to hear any differing techniques for creating a Boston hip roof segment. The only way I come even close is to make a hip, gable it, then add a roof return and extension large enough to run completely under the gable. Thanks! glennw
I assume you are talking about a Dutch Gable? In which case you can use the Dutch Gable tool. Open the Build Roof dbx>Roof Styles and pick the one you want.
rockyshepheard
Thank you Glen, Under that name I did find a tutorial.
DavidJPotter
I think the only place where they call it a "Boston Hip" is in Boston (Do the Irish hate the Dutch?). Until I knew better I used to call that design a "Texas Hip" until I started using Chief, so I am not just accusing Bostionan's of Architectural bigotry, I myself have suffered from that malady. DJP. tommy1
He did his "dutch gables" okay but they're really not dutch gables though. He had 2 roof planes too many...deleted them and reworked the roof manually and joined together fine. All is good now.

I live in the Northeast and went to architecture school in Boston. Today is the first day I heard the term "Boston Hip."
Alaskan_Son
My brother always calls it a Boston Hip for some reason while I call it a Dutch Hip...and we both grew up in the same place.
tommy1
Actually he has a gable roof with a full return from one end to another.

builtright3
OK, so all this mumbo-jumbo Tomato-Tomato leads me to another question; I know that we can do an automatic roof build and select where we want our regular gables and hips within the same roof structures but can we do an automatic build and select where we our our Dutch-Gables to be and still have regular hips and gables on other parts of the roof? Can I do this in an automatic build?
builtright3
I didn't see an option to select a wall to place a dutch gable like we would to place a regular gable or hip. That was the purpose of asking the questions to see if I might be over looking something. I cant seems to find any instruction on it in the video's or help menus but sometimes that is because I'm not asking the right questions.
glennw
If you follow the steps in the help file for the different types of roofs, all should be revealed. Pay particular attention to the roof settings in the wall definition dbx.
builtright3
Thank you Glenn! I was just looking in the wrong place. I'm not really even sure when they added that option. So used to doing a manual build I never even thought to check.
