Dedicated video card?

Recommended Posts

I need a new lap top, how important is a dedicated video card? I am running x7 now.

I want a light lap top to take to clients but powerful enough to run CAx8

MS Surface book is light. I has plenty power to run CA. Excellent screen.

Yes the video card is very important as most of what you will be showing clients will be your 3D presentations as it would be much easier just to print out your Arch D's if it was a 2D presentation.

Having a separate video card - and a good video card at that - is nearly mandatory if you plan to do serious work with CA.

Integrated graphics processors are getting better all the time. If you are not planning to do a lot of intensive 3D models then a dedicated card is not as important as it used to be. I have a Macbook pro and a Sony Vaio Duo, neither have a dedicated card and both run admirably in 3D. With that said my desktop rig has a GTX 980Ti card and it smokes both laptops obviously, but I can still be fairly productive on either laptop w/o the dedicated card.

I use a 13" macbooc pro. Integrated graphics suites my needs just fine. One thing to not is that the OS's power management will slow graphic intensive task down when running on battery power. Just be plugged in when doing 3d models.

if you can afford it - get the dedicated video card

preferably Nvidia

there is a difference between running and running well

this also allows for future upgrades if needed

How much does the Asus weigh? I know that you mentioned that you wanted light weight. I carry my macbook with me everywhere and its 3.5 pounds. After a while it gets heavy. I had to sacrifice the size/performance of the 15" for function and got the 13" because I always need a computer with me. I used to carry a heavier laptop around in college so I knew weight becomes an issue.

Fusion drive is ok but I would go all SSD if I could afford it. Most people can deal with a 512gb SSD on their laptop if it's not their main rig, unless you use it for heavy media use.

My current laptop weighs 2.6kg or 5.7lbs...I7, 8gb ddr3, 1tb drive, gt 540m 1gb....

I take my laptop to clients homes to input 3d model and again to show them final design..i wanted something somewhat light

but good enough not to hamper me with ca.

This one below is 5lbs...a mac book pro 15" = 4.4lbs...also $3k...love to have this but it is twice the price.

I wonder if new 13" mac book pro would work..still about 3lbs...$2300..if this would work it would be very compact, not available for 4-5 weeks

View life in 4K clarity

The new Inspiron 15 7000 Series Gaming Edition features 4K Ultra HD display. The large 15.6 inch touch display is perfect for gaming and maximum productivity for professionals on the go.

Solid-State Drive (SSD)

Solid-state drives are similar to the flash-based memory that you find in USB memory devices and have no moving parts, making them more secure and less prone to failure than standard hard drives. SSDs also pull your data from the drive faster and outperform 10,000 rpm Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) in read/write speeds, meaning you’ll also get faster load times on game maps and other information that’s stored on your device.

For people on the go, the potential benefits are significant
  • Improved performance — faster boot times, faster application launches and faster access to all your documents
  • Durability — helps protect your important files from potential drops
  • Longer battery life — lower power consumption by SSDs than HDDs
  • Quieter, lightweight, and cooler than standard hard drives
