  1. I think the thumbnail will only show up in windows explorer if you turn on the "preview pane" in explorer. Also, it won't look very good unless you turn on the large thumbnails.
  2. Sounds like a good idea. You should make a post on the suggestions forum.
  3. "I have had problems with this method as I make a change to one window and then they all change to match the one I wanted different." That's because of the "dynamic defaults". Changes to your default window will update any windows in your plan that are setup to "use default". Try this instead, make your changes to the window in your plan and then save it to the library. Now place the library window instead of placing the default window. If you have other windows in the plan that you would to match the library window, then use the "replace from library" tool. Or you could always just use copy/paste. Or the transform/replicate tool. Or...
  4. For just running Chief, I don't think it matters too much. Where it will matter the most is when you want to download an update, download any libraries, or watch any of the training videos. Chances are, you don't do any of these things very often so you may be able to get away with the cheapest option.
  5. Not using the library. You could put them all in a separate plan and use copy/paste instead.
  6. According to this help article it does. http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01846/
  7. I have found that they are pretty close but not perfect. Take a look at this picture. I made a copy of the plan view shadow and then converted it into a terrain feature. You can see that there are a couple of differences around the edges but overall they match pretty good. If you are seeing a problem where they don't match, you should post a plan or report it to tech support. BTW, I think the plan view shadows only show shadows for walls and roofs. You might be seeing shadows made by other objects in your camera views.
  8. You might want to check out the student version too. It's only $95 but it's only good for one year.
  9. I have always been a big fan of Chief's cabinet tools. You can use them as the basic building blocks for many other objects. This is a picture of a set of bedroom furniture that was all designed using almost nothing but cabinets. I also included a picture of the finished bed.
  10. I would convert the polyline solid into a fixture or furniture symbol. Most of the other symbol types are either very specialized or will do things you don't need for a cabinet tray. I would also make sure to setup a stretch plane so that you can make the trays wider/narrower as needed without looking funny. One of the main advantages of using a symbol instead of poly solid is that you can then use the same heights you use for the cabinets. Another advantage, is that you could even block them with the cabinet if you want them to stay together. Now if someone was really clever, they could probably build a more sophisticated symbol that inserts into the cabinet that includes the tray(s). I have never tried this but in theory it should work similar to how some of the other cabinet symbols work. I would start by trying to make it work like the wine racks.
  11. Right-click does the same as the "alt" key. It puts you in the "alternate" edit mode. Lot's of things work differently in alt mode but I have no idea if these are all documented. Sometimes it's just fun to try them to see what happens.
  12. I don't think X1 had it. If it did, it would be right next to the "follow terrain" box. I don't think there is any good way to solve this in X1. You could maybe draw your railing on top of terrain created at just the right slope, turn off the terrain, and export it as a symbol. You could then place the symbol on top of the stairs.
  13. You don't really need to save the camera (unless you just created a new one). "Also where is the best place to do some cad lines? on the layout or on the elevation view?" Depends on what the lines are. If you are drawing borders, title blocks, etc., on the layout page. If you are drawing anything that is specific to the view, it should be drawn in the view.
  14. To update any elevation or section view, all you really need to do is open the view (by double clicking on it in layout) and then close it. When you close it, the program will ask you if you want to update the layout. Just say "yes". As mentioned before, if all you have done is modify any cad, text, or dimensions, then you don't need to do this. Also, if you have used the "edit layout" feature to modify any of the layout lines, you will lose them when you update the view. I try to avoid ever using the edit layout feature for this reason.
  15. I assume you want to change the schedule numbers? Just select the schedule and then select the round handle for the row and drag it where you want it to be.
  16. It's a z-fighting issue. It seems to be particularly bad with the default door style. I think the panel is too thin. I've noticed that I don't see it with some of the other door styles.
  17. I think its been pretty reliable for me. Keep in mind that there are two different ways to change the door style. If you go to the "door/drawer" page, you can change the door style for the whole cabinet. If you go to the "front" page and click on the door, you can change the door style for just that one door. The individual door style has priority and will no longer change when you change the cabinet door style unless you then "clear" it.
  18. If the only reason you want to use room planner is because you want to use the disto, you might want to check out this article: http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01846/
  19. Has anyone tried using a DISTO with Chief? According to this article, you can already do it: http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01846/
  20. You can use as many different door styles as you have doors on your cabinet. You just click on the door you want to change and then click on the "library" button.
  21. And while you're at it, I think you need to change your login name too. "4 hot shoez"? I could maybe understand two hot shoes but where are you going to be wearing the other two? I won't even comment on your lack of basic spelling skills but don't all architects actually need to go to college? And what about your location? Who the heck has ever heard of "Kalamazoo"? Sorry. Couldn't resist.
  22. You can also tell which is the start and which is the end even if you don't have the "s" and "e" on. If you pay attention to the wall dimension, it has an arrow showing the direction it is going.
  23. I heard they are working on an android version but I haven't heard anything about a pc version. If all you want is a quick and easy program to draw a plan, I would check out one of the Home Designer products. If all you want is something to view plans, then you should check out the free viewer program.
  24. I assume you mean X6. I'm not sure if I can ever remember how Version 6 worked. Like D. Scott says, post a picture. There are several things that can cause "seams" to show. The first and probably most likely cause is that you have accidently turned on the cabinet module lines layer in your camera views. This will cause all cabinet lines to show, including the face frame pieces. Personally, when I am working out any cabinet design issues, I like working with the module lines turned on. Another issue that you may be running into has to do with how cabinets join up. If you have the back of one cabinet butted up against more then one other cabinet you can see weird seams. Apparently, Chief only likes it when one cabinet has its back against one other cabinet. Two or more causes problems with how the merge.
  25. Are you sure you selected the wall? If you have a room polyline, it's really easy to accidently select the poly instead of the wall. I always check the status bar to make sure I have what I want. Another thing you can do is make sure you are in wall mode. When you are in wall mode, you should only select walls when you left click. You should always be able to select anything else with a right click.
