I have to agree with Richard the forums are for open "civil" discussion I just don't want to repeat a dance that has been done many times before Lew
-
Richard: I have been on this forum for over a decade I can't think of one instance where a Chief user has reported being sued for "negligence" I think we all agree that the corporate "veil" can be pierced for "negligence" but being incorporated can offer protection IF "negligence" is absent liability can be transferred via contracts and disclaimers this is a recap of my positions and if you dispute that - then ??? I see no point in rehashing these concepts over and over as we have done for over a decade the best advice anyone on this forum needs is: see a lawyer in your jurisdiction that practices construction law and work with them Lew
-
Larry: whatever you measure what you need and I will measure what I need I too hope a device like this can make it easier but I too have my doubts I would have to try it before giving a "review" Lew
-
Larry: Yes, I have had projects where I needed to measure "everything" in the entire house the whole house was being "gutted" and rebuilt entire kitchens were being re-done etc etc etc Lew
-
Richard: we have been doing this dance to over a decade I'm done dancing - you will believe what you want to believe In past dances I have provided case law - if you want them do searches for them yes, the corporate veil can be pierced - IF there is negligence - gross negligence yes, liability can be transferred via contract and disclaimers that's it in a nutshell Lew

Jonathan: I agree with Chopsaw - model a real house that you have access to solving all those problems issues will go a long ways to getting "good" just going thru abstract "lessons" would be tedious and boring to me also recommend Dan at Chief Experts also follow every posting on this forum - every one even if you don't understand it or try it at the time you will remember that there is a solution for that issue this forum is a great education tool Lew -
The 10 (5 for most) minutes it takes to measure a room? Larry: seriously? - not if you are trying to measure "everything" maybe if you just want overall dims ? Lew
-
Lisa: the locks can't be sold - but can be donated I have already donated my locks for 9.5 thru X1 to the "needy" I did get $5 for mailing cost the donor should verify with CA that the "needy" has a valid license but also keep checking Ebay you can set up a follow search and get an email when an auction starts you may also want to get a newer version of chief as ver 9.5 is an antique lots of new features in each of the newer versions skip getting X3 as the library system is horrible I would aim to get X4 or later X7 and X8 require Win7 or later Lew

this is A Chief Forum if your not a Chief Fan what are you doing here Payette: all civil discussion is valid and useful if all you have is a hammer in your toolbox, then everything begins to look like a nail Lew

I'm betting it will be difficult to get the cad file into Chief If it is for one room at a time then it really only serves the purpose of doing room measurements I wonder how accurate they would be ? In 2004 I was checking out photogrammetery software thinking if I bought Chief I could create a fully dimensioned DWG file to import into Chief and voila instant 3D model it didn't work then - gotta wonder about now ? Lew
-
Worrying about what software will be the best for you five years down the road is CRAZY! I agree Lew
-
wow, hoping it works as stated Lew

Lynsey: do you have Chief or one of the HD products ? If HD then try the Hometalk forum Lew

Was told it would be $1,000 to replace it It is suggested to get "named insurance" for items like security keys or hardware locks in case they are lost or stolen CA will replace a broken lock for a small fee but if lost or stolen they don't have to - and probably won't the cost of the insurance is minimal and is a business expense Lew
-
Sorry, but for claims involving design negligence, corporate entities offer no liability protection Richard: sorry this is not true yes, the corporate veil can be pierced but it is wrong to say "no liability protection" Lew
-
Rob: I agree, building experience is "vital" I don't have it - but my partner did without him I would have never started the design business and if I had I would have soon been out of business Lew
-
if the documents are sloppily drafted with major omissions, it is the drafter who may ultimately suffer Richard: we have had this discussion about "transfer of liability" many times before over the past decade not going there again ... Lew
-
to suggest that we should do no more than that is a great disservice to everyone involved in the process Joey: I had builders make me take out "stuff" as they had to submit the permits and they didn't want to complicate the process and slow it down etc time and again they said only put in what they permit office wants and nothing more Lew
-
Note: CA has stated that the living area jumping problem has been fixed in X9 Lew
-
CA hasn't started SSA members beta yet I think that went 30 days in the past - but not really sure how long it was Lew
-
Mike: thanks for the clarification Lew
-
my guess based on priors is Feb or Mar Lew

and printing the file from a laptop Mike: Why print from the laptop ??? my understanding is if the printer is connected but has driver issues print to PDF then send PDF to printer and it should work the drivers for PDF are much simpler and doing this avoids the "real driver" issues Lew

always tell the client you have a two-week backlog of work even if you have nothing to do they will want it yesterday then tell them that you are sending out product for another client to review and they are usually slow getting back to you thus you MIGHT be able to get a start on THEIR project you have to ramp down their expectations just because they call Sunday afternoon and say they need it Monday morning you don't have to hop to their tune Lew
