Modeling Sunlight Inside - Daylighting In Chief Architect?
lbuttery replied to Pascalli's topic in General Q & A
try Sketchup or software dedicated to sun studies Lew -
edit area - all floors tool then use transform/replicate tool to move the clone the desired distance I recommend doing each building in a separate plan then make them into symbols then place those symbols into the master site plan Lew

Modeling Sunlight Inside - Daylighting In Chief Architect?
lbuttery replied to Pascalli's topic in General Q & A
Glenn: last I looked (a few years ago) Sketchup was way easier to control and way easier to make animations perhaps that has changed but I doubt it also the OP is in the play around stage and probably doesn't have a "complete" model yet Lew -
Modeling Sunlight Inside - Daylighting In Chief Architect?

you may want to check out the free version of Sketchup it has very nice tools for doing sun studies and making animations of them check out the tutorials on the Sketchup website(s) Lew -
I find that paying for more features than I need is not reasonable an admirable goal it is certainly possible to still watch tv on a circa 1960 B/w 13" set it is certainly possible to still drive a Model T Ford to get to work etc it is certainly possible to still build a house with a hand saw while possible - will it be enjoyable or efficient how do you get tech support for an "antique" version ??? each time CA releases a new version you will find it harder and harder to find anyone who remembers your version worked when I am in business I want the latest and greatest and will try to find a way to afford it yes, budget choices have to be made but to turn your back on new features just because "I didn't need them then - so I don't need them now" ??? Lew

CA won't having any of the older locks you would have to get someone to donate theirs or buy one on Ebay you should also try to find the download for ver 10.8b which was a patch for Vista trying to run ver 10.08a which was designed for Win XP on a newer PC is most likely going to cause grief you might get it to run but will it run well ??? consider finding an old XP PC and using it solely for Chief don't try to get on the internet with it or consider buying a newer version of Chief I would skip X1 and X3 X4 or later would be your best choice Lew

I then changed the height of one wall by 1/4" and it seems to be staying in the correct position I just love/hate these workarounds they can drive a user to drink.... Lew

Hmmm, I see where line style files can be imported into Chief but I don't see where they can be exported ??? If the line style file has an extension of .DAT (maybe .LIN ?) then you might be able to manually delete the line from the file then import into Chief if there is truly no way to delete line styles from Chief then this lack of feature should be fixed Lew
-
maybe versus the linetype editor ??? Lew

You need to contact CA's tech support there is probably little advice that other users can offer this should not be happening Lew

2D Plan Symbol For New Image In User Catalogue
lbuttery replied to 532001's topic in Symbols and Content
HD PRO probably is limited in editing symbols probably can't do it while HD PRO users can benefit from following the Chieftalk forum since they do have manual tools for roofs and framing and cabinets etc all HD users should also participate on the Hometalk forum If HD PRO is limitied in symbol making you might be able to use the free Sketchup and then import the new symbol into HD PRO and save in the library Lew -
Creative combinations of different objects such as fixtures, soffits, walls and wall openings allow you to create a wide variety of fireplace and chimney designs. Hmmm, a dedicated chimney tool would be so much nicer Lew

delete this thread Joe: how do we do that ? in the old forum we could delete our first posting and the thread was deleted don't see how to do that in this forum ? Lew

Larry: ask the moderators to move it Lew

Cheryl: I had time to play so I tried it in X6 and got the same error I then hit continue and received another popup - see attached then everything locked up using task manager I finally go it shut down I suspect that the missing .jpg on Drive F: is the culprit maybe those who were able to download the plan have a drive F: on their Pc's ??? this should be reported to CA's tech support Lew
-
Cheryl: not sure probably best to contact CA's tech support Lew

Roof/molding Returns - Can This Be Done In X6?
lbuttery replied to MickeyToo's topic in General Q & A
Mickey: Chief is great.... Chief has short-comings.... I think overall the great out weighs the short so I rant about the short and accept the great we get with each new release Chief will never be perfect Chief can be wonderful - if it fits your needs but only you can determine that Lew -
Bill: bought my first computer in 1978 for decades I considered $2000+ to be the "sweet spot" now It's $1500 for laptops, closer to $1000 for desktops to guide in picking a system at $1500 (or any price point) I would need more info as to the users goals and needs and wants etc $3200 buys a lotta PC these days it can be justified or it can be "overkill" Lew
-
$3200 is a lotta PC be sure you need that kind of oomph for your Chief needs most chiefers can get by nicely with approx. $1500 PC's it is very easy to "overkill" with the specs Lew
-
I doubt it there are very few users of this tool it has very limited features Lew
-
close the plan in chief zip the plan attach to a post there is a size limit if its too big - use Dropbox or similar cloud service Lew
-
Martha: not sure about display issues you may need to post the plan to receive more than guesses copied the property line polyline and overlaid the terrain perimeter to get the right size and location then deleted the property line I recommend keeping the property line separate from the Terrain Perimeter ( by making the TP larger than the lot you gain many benefits such as having room for roads, sidewalks, other bldgs. etc I also don't like seeing the "ends of the universe" when doing renders etc all around more freedom having the PL's nested inside the TP Lew
-
Kbird: never knew those settings were there... Lew
-
you would think that Chief would have a chimney tool they have been around for "thousands of years" and common to construction the tool could also have settings for common styles with flare on left or right or both etc I've been suggesting this for almost a decade guess CA's not listening Lew
