Here is another one, note the vertical shadow to the left of w(02). What is causing the shadow? Well, yesterday there was an 8" pop-out/architectural projection that caused the shadow. Zoning required I delete the pop-out, I did, do you see a vertical line? No. I had updated the elevation, the shadow stayed, the architectural projection was gone. I missed the remaining shadow before I printed plans. I just got off the phone with the plan checker, she picked it up, I assured her that I eliminated the projection, she was nice enough to believe me and so I will get my permit. Otherwise it was a minimum of x amount of dollars to reprint, redeliver, meet again with plan checker blah blah blah.... I have now reopened and it is okay, but you can see by the picture that something is awry. There is no vertical wall edge to cause the shadow, yet it is there. I am getting very frustrated with this type of stuff.

Maybe this thread was born out of frustration, but to blame power users for retarding improvements in the program is nutty. It's the power users who are the most vocal when it comes to improving the program. However, the power users are guilty of trying to find solutions with the inconsistencies with the program. Hey power users, stop trying to help with alternant solutions.

BTW, the garage is 24' x 24'. If you make it narrower, remove the beam, the joists and strapping go in different directions (good), if you make the garage wider, they run parallel with each other (bad), if you keep the garage 24' sq without a beam, the joist and strapping run in opposite directions (good), if you put a beam in, the joists and strapping run parallel (bad). I have not tested what would happen if I stood on my tip toes and said 7 Hail Mary's. Is this inconsistent behavior or is it just me? Come on CA, let's somehow get this stuff to behave consistently. And yes I have made the request to be able to control the direction behaviors.

That my friend is very good. You put the strapping in the CEILING FINISH dbx. Very nice. But wait, why can't we specify the joists going in one direction and the strapping/or dropped ceiling joists going in the other direction? Maybe if an architect was on staff, he would of picked this up. BTW, in the past (several years ago) I have requested the ability to have ceiling/floor joists running in one direction and having the dropped ceiling joists/strapping running in the other direction. I wonder if this is a good feature request?

Never mind, it might of been my problem, I had defaulted you ceiling hts but failed to rebuild the framing. I usually leave auto rebuild framing on. My bad.

That is weird. I did redownload your plan and the section looked as you say. However, I did download your plan previously, it is attached, and I still get the weird section. Well, here it is fixed.... I said a few cuss words and then turned the walls from attic walls to non attic walls, and it is now fixed. 15-1071 Ridgewood Garage FIXED 1.plan

Interesting, if you select the side wall, define as going thru ceiling, you will get your wall, albeit a ballooned framed wall.... which maybe not what you want. But think about it , maybe you want the wall ballooned framed so it is not an issue. If you do not want it ballooned.... I am not sure what your option is other that to build it yourself on the attic level..... of course I would have a 3rd floor, but that is another subject.

As usual I did learn something from you...... I learned how to use the use soffit material option..... I have a lot of sloped ceiling with stucco finishes, thanks for that. I maintain the second floor option is the best method.

Glenn, it looks like the closet walls are shorter than the exterior walls, IOW the top of the wall is not as tall as the line where the roof plane hits the wall, whereas in the latest picture the closet walls reach that line. You must of changed something. I assume you do not have ceiling joists if a section was cut, and I assume you can not have a different materials for the closet ceiling and top of closet floor.

That is very true, but I find the CA dimensioning for elevations a non starter. I use CAD lines, similar to what Alan is talking about. The CAD lines are already in my elevation camera shots, and it is simply a matter of changing the CAD lines to reflect 8' plates vs 9' plates. I wish it was more auto, but I have found it more trouble than it is worth.

Why wouldn't you do it the way Tommy suggests? I cannot think of one good reason to use your method instead of Tommy's. If you do not use Tommy's method, you might want to give it a try.... very powerful method and no downside.

Here is the answer. Do not change in the ROOM SPEC BOX, change it in the FLOOR 2 DEFAULTS. Open plan, go to second floor, open FLOOR 2 DEFAULTS and change them to what you want them. It should stick and all will be well. You probably should of watched DJP's video.

Here is a solution. The ridge is parallel to ground (not angled) and all the roof pitches are the same. Eaves are exactly the same, The top plates are the same height and the ceiling inside is constant. Note there are 2 additional roof planes.
