  1. The advice these days is to use PBR Views and make sure Hardware Ray Tracing is turned on in Preferences...... The two methods CPU and PBR are not compatible material and lighting wise , and with PBR now infinitely faster , it is best to use it and stick with it and adjust material properties and lighting for the PBR View. Also make sure you computer is using the dedicated GPU (dGPU) if using a Laptop and that has both a built in intel GPU and a dGPU such as a Nvidia or AMD Card as well. M.
  2. You may benefit as would Alan by going to a Z790 MOBO and and a 14th Gen CPU especially if Chief goes "multi-threaded" in the near future and can work with more than 1 core ( and hyperthreading), that has been a longtime coming though , so I am not holding my breath . I reused my DDR4 as I already had 64Gb Alan can't do that as He's using DDR3 so He might as well go straight to DDR5 @ 6000mhz or above for a bit of a gain there over standard DDR4. M.
  3. I waited for the 4080 Super to release for the Cost savings over the 4090 ( it's about 80-85% as quick) as I am not sure the extra "power" of the 4090 is actually something chief can or will take advantage off , ( or it's extra Ram), it's actually not that demanding on 3D as an application, as say compared to a top flight AAA Game might be, so it may depend on what else you also do with the computer. The 4080 Super is faster than my old 3080Ti and use less power and I don't feel like I'm sitting next to a little Heater anymore either . I am hoping this system will serve well for the next 3-5 years , so spreading the Cost out, it doesn't seem that bad. It seems like GPUs are never going back to the "good old days" pricing wise , so it always depends on Wants and needs and of course the budget or maybe what your tax return looks like this year . * 1 caveat in upgrading computers is that at 1st you may notice some differences in speed etc, so you maybe wowed the 1st week, but after that it quickly becomes "normal" or expected. M.
  4. At this point , I'd suggest you get a new Mobo/RAM/CPU, ( What I did in Jan.) and perhaps a PCIe4 NVME for the Main Slot for OS/Programs and use you existing NVME as Storage Drives Another consideration for the new videocards maybe a higher wattage Power Supply for the newer CPU ( 14700k-14900k) and a 4070 Super GPU, I am happy with my new 4080 Super, but it also the biggest Videocard I have ever seen, and it only fit in my case after a slight modification due to it's length.) So perhaps a new system , with you current one "handed down" or stored as a backup might be a better option.... M.
  5. Hi Alan, assuming your Signature is still accurate? Chief will be defaulting to using the X12 version of PBR as it is not capable with a GTX970 ( or any GPU in the 900,1000.1600 series) to use Chief's newer Astral Lighting Engine introduced in X13, ( you can check in Preferences ) this is what most here refer to as PBR-RTRT (Realtime Raytracing), this is due to cards before the 2000 Series not having the embedded RTX Hardware to do Hardware Raytracing. Not that X12's PBR or even Standard View looked Bad to me, with X15 Chief has finally worked out most of the kinks in the new lighting Engine, ( the Denoiser has been a game changer, not sure why it wasn't implemented at the offset though ) which I heard has been improved in X16 from someone who attended KBIS last month. Mick.
  6. Why not download the Trial Version and give it a try or Perhaps get Home Designer Pro which has the same Roof Module as Chief Architect ie Manual roof planes if Needed. M.
  7. Not without the Plan file....... fairly SOP to post it here so other can check you settings..... Did you check the KB ? for example this Tutorial..... https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00038/resolving-a-gap-between-floors-in-camera-views.html M.
  8. Version 10 or X10 (Ver.20) ..... And these days there is no Upgrade Path, if you were aware Chief went Subscription only in Jan. 2023 , see below https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/37322-chief-architect-software-licensing-changes-beginning-january-10-2023/ M.
  9. Take a few screengrabs , so people have a better idea of what you mean , as it doesn't sound like anything I've experienced.... you'll be here a lot so I'd advise you to add your Forum Signature as most people have ( see below) so we know what Version you are using and perhaps your Hardware as well. Mick. https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/18908-signature-here-at-chief-talk/?tab=comments#comment-155662
  10. Time to finally upgrade your computer Alan you need PBR - RTRT .... https://chieftalk.chiefarchitect.com/topic/41674-patio-louvre-roof/?do=findComment&comment=309757 Mick.
  11. sounds like I misunderstood what you wanted as well ? I want to show the framing members only without wall, floor, and ceiling
  12. You'd need to make it yourself, nothing in chief's Catalogues...... there are a number of ways in Chief , like Rene's suggestions above, you can also use 3D Solids and multi-copy .... this one was done that way....
  13. A framing View should work , but it will depend on what you else you need to show.... A wall type with no drywall or covering should show the framing as well ( turn on Framing, Wall in view). M.
  14. Only one Palm in 3D , in the Bonus 3D Tropical > Trees Library ---- a sabal palmetto ( also in 2D in the main plant library ) ..... Xfrog has always had good vegetation but prices seem up these days......... https://www.xfrog.com/ M.
  15. hopefully that's it and it not a GPU Issue like overheating or failing..... Glen you'll need to let him know how to do that on a Mac as I can't see a tutorial like below for the Mac OS. For Windows Users : https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03140/forcing-chief-architect-programs-to-use-a-specific-graphics-card-in-windows-10-11.html Mick.
  16. Chief Plans are in the File Format [PlanName].plan not dwg which you must have exported? the 200 error is likely because the Plan is still open in Chief and the File is "locked" automatically when open..... so save the plan, close Chief and try again. M.
  17. I would suggest moving Chief out of Documents and thus out of OneDrive's automatic Backup of Documents "reach" and another way to go..... OD is a curse in Windows 11, I've had numerous issues with it since switch from Win 10, Chief really should not be using that Folder by default any longer , IMHO https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03132/resolving-unexpected-behavior-on-a-windows-pc-by-redirecting-the-data-folder.html I've also had several Client's on Mac's having Issues too with either iCloud and also Dropbox , which is enabled by default on some versions of MAC Os. https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03116/resolving-unexpected-behavior-on-a-mac-by-redirecting-the-data-folder.html M.
  18. I think it can do 3D DWGs and some Sketchup "Shapes" but AFAIK Chief only exports 2D DWGs..... but don't quote me on that M.
  19. I think that is the room base showing not a ledger , try removing the moldings from the Room. M.
  20. check out this recent thread........... M.
  21. I use CTRL on a PC and I tink it the same on a Mac , so perhaps you need to check your HotKey List and make sure it is still assigned. M
  22. Chief is slow if you work in PBR, even with my new 4080 Super Desktop GPU, your 4060 Laptop GPU is significant slower, so try working in Standard View , with Lines on ( my preferred method these days) and when you have a Camera View you Like in Standard view "duplicate" it via the Project Browser and switch it to PBR and change the settings as necessary. There are Issues with certain Nvidia Drivers including the latest Studio Driver so personally I am back on the Game Ready Driver Ver. 551.52 on the 4080S, before that on my 3080ti I was on the Drivers in my Sig. Mick.
  23. I do it this way as well, using a foundation wall usually, same as I'd step a FDN Wall, I find it easier to control than a "Retaining Wall". https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01809/creating-a-stepped-foundation.html Mick
  24. Forgot to add earlier to try turning OFF Refraction in the PBR Camera Settings and see if it helps with Glass, sometime you want it sometime not I find, and PBR-RT is quick enough now to try it and see both ways ......also make sure that the Denoise Option is enabled , it was a game changer in x15 , and word is things look nicer in X16 if a TAD slower in PBR-RT. Mick.
