Got a couple good results - better than RT. Not sure this is the best example but the process is the same. Must have your materials and lights figured out as in a RT so it's more work than a 'standard' render but the results are pretty good. Here's a short vid that may help.

Did a bit of searching and got just a bit more confused. Thought maybe Chief had a tut or library of maps? Saw the latest vid from the NKBA show and Scott was showing a wood floor with the grooves showing up so nicely and I thought that might be a bump map thing? ...but no clue how to accomplish same. I'll keep at it and thanks as always Michael.

Is there a tutorial somewhere? Pretty lost on the process but want to add bump and normal maps to my skill set. Does Chief have a library of same? Thanks

Thinking of upgrading my MAC COMPUTER, should I?
HumbleChief replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
Would not hold my breath. I have struggling with large files for a very long time and threw as much hardware as I could with no change. Chief is simply slow software when the models get large. -

That sucks. Since this is our livelihood I think many of us are willing to throw cash at some new hardware but not if there aren't noticeable improvements in performance. So what's the end game? Chief gets larger with more (admittedly great) features and just slows down until what? Hopefully a new MAC Pro will get you the performance you need... -

Good advice and I suppose that can be managed by layer sets well? I haven't taken the time to set mine up with that consideration but perhaps it's time I did. -

I threw my many core Xeon processors at a large test model and it was much slower at most operations versus a modern i7 processor that handles single threaded operations much better as Graham has stated above. Would NOT get a Xeon processor again unless RayTracing is your focus and the many cores can be utilized. -

Many Chief users are facing the same issue - speed - or lack thereof and there's no easy solution as Chief is just a slow computer program when models get large. Many reasons for this of course but there's no relief in sight from the good folks at Chief (actually the reverse seems to be happening with Chief X10 actually running slower) so we have no other choice but to throw as much hardware as we can at the problem but the question is always the same, "Which hardware is going to make a real world difference." My computer is great about 90% of the time but those 10% jobs are torture. I'll have to make that decision coming up real soon and am lost as to which way to go and am not optimistic about seeing any great performance improvements which really blows. I don't know MAC's so can't help you specifically Scott but I'm curious if you'll notice any real differences with the Mac Pro. Keep us posted please. -
Nice video Michael, Haven't delved in to those settings for years but it's nice to remember what they are for....

VERY nice. Could not find a couple windows hidden in an out building. The find object tool located them - SUPER nice new feature.

Nice....Thanks for the info...

Beach front apartment kitchen and living room
HumbleChief replied to EricWMLim's topic in Tips & Techniques
I think those are really nice renders and a nice design. The only thing I see, since I love to cook is there's very little counter space around the range - that would make me a little nuts. I hope that's the kind of feedback you are asking for?? Again nice job. -
It might be a bit like the letter you write expressing your frustrations and then re-reading it and tossing the letter instead of sending it. I've done that more than once here on the forum. Not sayin' it's the proper form but checking one's self before sending/posting some things can be very good for the soul.

Curious David, why did you post this? Did you think it was helpful in some way? Do you read and edit your posts before/after you post them? Is this really what you think this forum is for? You are aware (I hope) that "I have tried everything" is merely a figure of speech that does not have to be taken literally? Aren't you? I recently told my wife I would meet her down at the store. Was the store actually 'down' from where I was? Should I have STUDIED each location's altitude and then modified my statement to say "up" at the store if indeed, through my diligent study, I discovered that I was indeed wrong, I had not though of everything, and the store was actually higher than our current location? Perhaps, "I have tried everything I can think of," might satisfy your need to belittle those who are currently not as expert as yourself in the software? Probably not. I'm not sure how you see the purpose of these forums but I see them as a place to help others, not a place to preach to others the correct way to use and interpret the English language. I'm just not sure your post helps anyone, other than your self and some frustration that most likely does not belong here. As a mater fact I'm not sure my post helps anyone other than myself and some frustration that most likely doesn't belong here. I'll think about that a bit and perhaps delete this post upon further self examination.

Thinking of upgrading my MAC COMPUTER, should I?
HumbleChief replied to dshall's topic in General Q & A
I assume you meant 'plan' above? I really hope a faster computer solves the issue for you Scott. I upgraded my computer to the fastest chips that were available for my Mother Board and saw almost no improvement in my couple of problem plans. Your case might be different, just keep your expectations low and you might be pleasantly surprised. -

Yes Joe, Thanks. An unneeded, unnecessary step and an overlooked feature IMO. -

fixed... What good is a brand new shiny template plan that only shows a small part of the work you've put in to it by setting up Plan Views? Thanks Joe -

Unexpected Solution With The New Plan View Feature in X10
HumbleChief replied to HumbleChief's topic in General Q & A
Thanks Edward - I'll make time to watch the video. -
You can also import the picture directly in to the plan file and position/size where you like, create a separate layer for your pic and turn layer on/off at will.

Curious Perry, Have you (or anyone) incorporated the plan views in to your template plan? -
I always wanted a way to change floors to the foundation level when I changed the Anno Set to my Foundation Anno Set and it was always a 2 step process both down to the foundation and back up to the main floor. With a foundation plan set it changes floors and Anno Sets together with one simple step. SWEET!!
