winterdd
How many framers or engineers do we have in here guys? I am very curious as to how the decorative beams (below) are actually attached to the home when they are NOT protruding into the home over the top plate. Is the front door exterior wall framed to catch the end of the beam somehow and then front part of the beam nailed to the rafters or something? Need to hear from the pros on this. I can design anything the client wants but sometimes analyze these type of things and wonder just how the heck it is done. I have seen it done before on finished homes so I know it is possible. exterior view interior view
basketballman
Maybe if they were made of StyroFoam .. The unsupported ridge is what really concerns me, though ..

The ridge can be done, I already did a home like this with a bigger span and the engineers worked their magic without adding collar ties (if I understand your concern correctly)
basketballman
Guess a steel I-beam or LVL's and a steel flitch plate could be cantilevered out that far .... In that case the decorative rafters could be hung from structural rafters But the one on the far right ( short one ) would have to be a cantilevered to pick up the 5' or so of fly rafters that need to be supported

I still try to avoid sending them silly things that can 't work though and feedback on here from guys who have built homes is helpful
5FT-20Designs
Hollow beams look like the way to go. Secure a 2x cut to the inside beam width, attach your hollow beam w/screws from the side into the 2x. If you hadn’t finished the roof, could put some blocking between the rafters & lag bolt the beams from the top. I’m not an engineer, but I slept at a Motel 6 last night. If I remember my commercials correctly.
